Reading #23
A Roman Lieutenant Addresses his Men
Quanto in periculo, milites, simus, vos omnes cognovistis.
Itaque quid, milites Romani, agemus? Num pacem petemus? Num ad hostes legatos
trademus?
Ponite, milites, spem in virtute! Virtutem patrum nostrorum memoria tente! Munite castra!
Impetus hostium sustinete! Copias hostium pellite, vincite, occidite! Pugnate usque ad mortem!
Imperator Romanus propter gloriam nominis Romani vos ad arma et mortem vocat!

Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus5

Amen.
This beautiful prayer, which is known and loved by all Catholics, has its origin in the records of the New
Testament. The first words were spoken to Mary by the Angel Gabriel; the second section contains the greeting
of St. Elizabeth. The following account is simplified from St. Luke.
Missus est angelus7 Gabriel a Deo in civitatem Galilaeae cui nomen [erat] Nazareth. Missus est ad Mariam.
Maria autem orabat. Angelus7 ei,
Ave Gratia Plena!
inquit,Dominus Tecum!
Benedicta1 Tu in Mulieribus!2
Mary was disturbed at the greeting, but the angel said:
Do not be afraid, Mary, for thou has found grace with God. The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee and the
power of the Most High shall overshadow thee; and therefore the Holy One to be born shall be called the Son of
God. Mary answered, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word.
Then Mary went into the hill country to visit her cousin Elizabeth. Elizabeth autem Mariae,
Benedicta,1 inquit, tu inter mulieres2 et benedictus1 fructus3 ventris4 tui.
Thus, the Angel Gabriel and St. Elizabeth composed the first part of the prayer. The word Jesus and the last
part (Sancta Maria, etc.) were added gradually by the devotion of Catholics. The Hail Mary, in the full form to
which we are accustomed, appears first in the fifteenth or sixteenth century.
This beautiful scene of the Annunciation is commemorated also in the Angelus and in the first of the Joyful
Mysteries of the Rosary.
