PHYSICS REVISION

GRADE IX

1. Complete: 2. Define the following:

a. speed = a. speed
b. velocity = b. velocity
c. acceleration = c. scalar
d. v = d. vector
e. s = e. mass
f. v2 = f. weight
g. in a speed time graph; g. acceleration
h. acceleration / deceleration = h. density
i. distance traveled = i. work done
j. F = j. energy
k. W = k. potential energy
l. moment = l. kinetic energy
m. pressure = m. pressure
n. pressure = n. density
o. work done = o. power
p. gravitational potential energy =
q. kinetic energy =
r. power =

3. The graph below shows a speed time graph of a bicycle. Describe the motion of this bicycle as much as
possible.

speed

A B

C
O
time /s
4. A student investigates the speed of a trolley and finds that it is 50cm/s, and one second later that it is
150cm/s.
What is the acceleration of the trolley?

5. The diagrams show an empty beaker on a balance and some liquid in a measuring cylinder.

When all the liquid is poured into the beaker, the balance reading changes to 140g.
What is the density of the liquid?

6. The diagrams show a brick resting on a smooth surface.

(a)Two equal forces, F, act on the brick. Which brick does not move?

(b) Describe what would happen to the brick in the other three cases.
(c) If for brick B, one force is 80N and the other force is 70N acting at right angles to one another, draw a
suitable vector diagram to scale to calculate the resultant of the two forces acting on the brick.

7. The diagrams show a diver climbing some steps and jumping off a diving board.
Where does the diver have the most gravitational potential energy (energy of position)?
8. A student carried out a ‘principle of moments’ experiment using a metre rule placed on a pivot at the
50.0cm mark. The aim was to determine an unknown weight. The arrangement of the apparatus is shown in
figure.

The student placed the unknown weight W at a convenient distance of a = 35cm from the pivot. He found b,
the distance from the pivot that the 5.0N weight must be placed so that the rule balanced horizontally. By
experiment he obtained b to be 40cm. Calculate W.

9. In an experiment to find the density of some oil, a student takes the following readings.

(a)(i) Calculate the mass of oil in the jug.

(ii) Calculate the density of the oil.
(iii) How could the volume of the oil be more accurately measured than with the measuring jug?
(b) Water is more dense than oil. On the figure below, mark approximately where the surface of the same
mass of water would be if it replaced the oil.
10. (i) If you stepped on the point of a sharp nail with your bare foot, it would be extremely painful. Explain,
in terms of pressure, why this is so.
(ii) A person can lie on a bed of nail-points if there are a large number of nails. Explain why this is not
extremely painful.

11. (a) A farmer has two vehicles with the

same weight and the same number of
wheels.
The figure shows what the wheels on these
two vehicles look like.

Which vehicle should the farmer use when

driving across his fields when the ground is
very soft? Give your reasons.

13. A tidal power station is made by building a

barrage across the mouth of a river. At high tide the
sea water is trapped behind the barrage.
At low tide the water is allowed to flow back into
the sea through a turbine.
(a) What is the useful energy change in a tidal
power station?
(b) Explain how the energy of the sun is stored
behind the water in the barrage.

14. A manometer is being used to measure the

pressure of the gas inside a tank. A, B, C and D show the manometer at different times.
Comment on the pressure of the gas at the various times and give the relevant formula(e) to determine the
gas pressure.
