Army Officials had failed to assess

recruitment
rally number of participants
Gwalior
Army recruitment rally normally
draw big crowds, but officials associated with the whole process failed miserably to assess the number of prospective job seekers. Army officials expected that 5-10 thousand candidates
would turn up. But nearly 25,000 candidates from the nearby districts presented themselves at the local Mela
Ground. There was no arrangement to
cater to such a large number and in haste
the rally was cancelled at the last minute.
This annoyed the candidates who started protesting. According to sources, someone
spread the rumour that one candidate has
died and this resulted in stampede as candidates started running in all directions.
Enraged job aspirants went on a rampage,
Inspector General Adarsh Katiyar told
media. With little police force to man the
mob and no barricading at all to control the
inflow of candidates, trouble started when a
group of aspirants pushed others in front of
them to get first chance for the mandatory
run in the first qualifying round. When
aspirants continued to create ruckus, army
authorities announced change in schedule of
rally. Then a few police constables used mild
force canes to put aspirants in order. The
result was a stampede and, as aspirants
retreated, some among them started pelting
stones. Additional force was also deployed

for the occasion arrived at the scene and

started cane-charging trouble-makers. The
candidates ran amok and, while shouting
slogans, resorted to heavy brick-batting.
"As per initial information candidates
went on rampage after a change in the
schedule of rally. No casualties have been
reported so far," said Sarabjeet Singh, chief
of the state intelligence wing. Some candidates torched vehicles and damaged property. Police had to cane-charge the candidates
and lob tear gas shells to disperse the candidates. Some candidates were injured.

According to PTI, six persons suffered

injuries in the stampede, and were later discharged after being provided medical treatment. This also created law and order situation as many candidates ventured out in
the local areas and started created problems. Finally, arrangements were made to
send the candidates back to their respective
places. Meanwhile, Gwalior SSP Santosh
Kumar Singh said a report on the incident
has already been sent to police
headquarters at Bhopal. "We have asked SPs in
various districts under Gwalior, Chambal

and Sagar divisions

to take appropriate
action against miscreants being identified on
the basis of photographs
and video footage available with us here in
Gwalior", the SSP said.
"Apart from this we are trying to ascertain
what went wrong. All necessary measures
will be in place to avoid reoccurrence of such
incidents."
A PIL (public interest litigation) was
also filed in the high court bench at Gwalior
by advocate Raju Sharma and Umesh Vohre
seeking probe into the incident and compensation for the victims. Raju Sharma said
a probe by an independent agency be
ordered considering various aspects like
damages, injuries, event mismanagement,
failure of various government agencies,
attempts to outrage women's modesty etc.
The PIL is likely to come up for hearing
during next week.

PM: Ayurveda can make

a global impact, like Yoga

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi recently said the biggest challenge to
Ayurveda comes from people who have dedicated their life to it. They too do
not trust it fully, he said. Seeking to dispel the notion of Ayurveda and
Allopathy being competing streams of medical science, the Prime Minister
described Ayurveda as a way of life. He said a disease can be cured by
Allopathy; and if a person adopts Ayurveda, he can ensure that he remains
healthy and free of disease.

NEW DELHI

He called upon practitioners of

Ayurveda to be dedicated to
Ayurveda not just as a profession, but as a service to
mankind. He was speaking at
the valedictory function of the
6th World Ayurveda Congress.
The Prime Minister said that
Yoga had acquired global recognition for people who wanted a
stress-free life and were moving
towards holistic healthcare.
Similarly, if Ayurveda is presented in the right spirit as a way of
life, it too can acquire acceptance. The Prime Minister said it
is essential for Ayurveda to
reach people in a simple, effective way. For this, the modes of
treatment should also be better
packaged. Narendra Modi said
space has to be created in international medical and science
publications, for articles on
Ayurveda. But the effort for this
has to come from the practitioners and researchers of Ayurveda,
he added.

Industry body unhappy for delay

in sanctioning power connections

Jammu

Members of industry body

Bari Brahmana Industries
Association (BBIA) are unhappy
with the Power Development
Department for the delay in
sanctioning power connections
to industrial units here. They
have appealed to the CM to
intervene in the matter.
At a meeting held here
recently,
under
the
Presidentship of Annil Suri,
they discussed the casual attitude of Power Development
Department towards the industrial sector in respect of release
of new connections / additional
power loads in favour of the
units
located
in
SIDCO
Industrial
Complex,
Bari
Brahmana.
During the meeting, members showed strong resentment
towards the delay tactics adopted by the office of the Power
Development commissioner for
not holding the meeting since
last six months for the sanction

of new connections/additional
load of the industrial units, it
said.
The unit holders have experienced immense suffering as
they have already invested
crores of rupees on the plant
and machinery which is sitting
idle due to non-release of power
connections in spite of power
load available at 50X2 MVA
Station at Bari Brahmana.
The
Development
Commissioner power is not
bothered about the Government
Orders for time bound clearance
of Power Sanction cases which
clearly shows the negative attitude of the Department towards
the Industrial Sector which is
providing employment to lakhs
of youth of the State, the BBIA
release added. Under the circumstances, BBIA has appealed
to the CM Jenab Omar Abdullah
to intervene in the matter and
issue necessary orders to clear
the pending cases on urgent
basis which will provide great
relief to the industrial sector.

PM launches Digital Life

be enhanced: Minister

New Delhi
The Prime Minister, Narendra
Modi, recently launched "Jeevan
Pramaan" an "Aadhar-based Digital
Life Certificate" for pensioners, in a
move that could eventually benefit over
a crore pensioners. The Prime Minister
said that after the push towards selfcertification, this digital life certificate
was another enabling mechanism which
would benefit the common man.
The proposed digital certification
will do away with the requirement of a
pensioner having to submit a physical
Life Certificate in November each year,
in order to ensure continuity of pension
being credited into his account. The
Department of Electronics and IT has
developed a software application which
will enable the recording of the pensioner`s Aadhar number and biometric
details from his mobile device or computer, by plugging in a biometric reading device. Key details of the pensioner,
including date, time, and biometric
information will be uploaded to a central database on real-time basis, ultimately
enabling
the
Pension
Disbursing Agency to access a Digital
Life Certificate. This will conclusively
establish that the pensioner was alive
at the time of authentication. The earlier requirement entailed that a pensioner either personally presents himself

New Delhi
Union Agriculture Minister

Radha

Mohan Singh has stressed the need to further enhance the involvement of women
into dairy sector so that India can lead the
world in the sector. Addressing the Golden
Jubilee celebrations of National Dairy
Development Board in Anand, Gujarat, he
said that the Government is set to remove
all bottlenecks and inertia in the growth of
the sector to further emulate, growth of
Gujarat, in whole of country.
Radha Mohan Singh said that value of

authorities specified by the Central
Pension Accounting Office (CPAO). At
present, 50 lakh individuals draw pension from the Central Government
alone. A similar number draw pension
from State and Union Territory
Governments. Several PSUs also provide pension benefits. Over 25 lakh
retired personnel draw pension from the
Armed Forces.
The Aadhar-Based
Digital Life Certificate will go a long
way in reducing hardship which so

many senior citizens have to go through

to produce a Life Certificate every year.
The software application system will
be made available to pensioners and
other stakeholders on a large scale at no
extra cost. It can be operated on a personal computer or a smartphone, along
with an inexpensive biometric reading
device. This facility will also be made
available at Common Service Centres
being operated under the National eGovernance Plan, for the benefit of pensioners residing in remote and inaccessible areas.

Cong opposes Polavaram project, says

large number of tribals will be displaced
RAIPUR
Opposition Congress is mounting pressure on CM Raman Singh to make his stand
clear on neighbouring state's controversial
Polavaram project that could lead to displacement of people in Southern tip of
Maoist affected tribal Bastar region, even as
Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh explore
areas of mutual interest for development.
Both the CMs have maintained that the
issue was not discussed as it was under 'subjudice' before the apex court.
Andhra Pradesh Government has said
that Polavaram is a very important project
and the Andhra Pradesh government has
already spent Rs 6,000 crore on it. Hence
they have urged the Chhattisgarh government to co-operate (with AP) in constructing
it. An AP Government spokesman said that
we have allayed their apprehensions about
submergence of villages on their side and
assured that the best rehabilitation and
resettlement package will be given.
But Leader of Opposition in the
Assembly TS Singhdeo and former CM Ajit
Jogi said the state should have taken a
strong stand before Andhra Pradesh on the
matter. "A large number of villages in
Sukma face threat of submergence, leading

to large scale displacement of tribals," Jogi

said. Jogi said the project needs to be
opposed strongly as state's vast rich mineral

resources would go under submergence and

it will also pose a serious threat to rich biodiversity of the region. Chhattisgarh govern-

but it was given at the last moment to

Union Minister Suresh Pachouri and
All India Mahila Congress president
Shobha Oza. "I resigned from the post
of state unit's vice president yesterday
as the party leadership has not kept
its promise on the issue of giving ticket," Agrawal said.

Guddu quits
Internal dissention in the
Congress party appears to be increasing by the day. After the resignation of
former State Congress vice-president,
Manak Agrawal, it was the turn of former Congress MP Premchand Guddu
to resign from all party posts. Guddu
is peeved with the ticket distribution
of the Congress party for the civic
polls and has charged that the

ment has been in a fix after BJP government

at Centre declared it as a priority project in
an apparent attempt to woo Seemandhra.
Chhattisgarh and Odisha have, however,
been opposing it.Several cases, including
those filed by Chhattisgarh and Odisha governments, have been pending against the
proposed project to be set up on the
Godavari river, 42km upstream of Godavari
barrage. The 2,160-metre long dam's catchment area is 3,06,643 sq km. At least 63,691
hectares of forest land in Andhra Pradesh,
Chhattisgarh and Odisha may be submerged. Andhra Pradesh and undivided MP
had entered into an agreement on August 7,
1978, for the project aimed at irrigation,
power generation and augmentation of
water in Krishna basin. Without taking the
then MP government into confidence,
Andhra had surveyed the area likely to be
submerged and prepared a project report.
The report indicated that 2,717 people of 680
families, 42 pucca and 300 'kutcha' houses
would be affected. About 2,398 hectares
would be submerged. In 2006, Maoists also
opposed Polavaram project. The guerrillas
on many occasions took out rallies in Andhra
and launched awareness campaign in
Bastar against it.

he is tired of requesting to the party

has not been done, he is resigning
from his posts in the party. "It was a
genuine demand that Muslim candidates should be given tickets in

said Sajid Ali.

The story behind the iconic Saina Nehwal, K Srikanth

win
China
Open
titles
picture of Sachin's last innings

is worth a thousand words,

A Ait picture
captures the emotions that stay
etched in our minds forever. Last year
around this time, emotions were running
high in the cricketing world -- Sachin
Tendulkar was playing in his last international match of his career.
To the delight of the fans, the final
swansong witnessed just about everything
- Glimpses of old Tendulkar, the straight
drive, the back foot punch through extra
cover and the raising of the bat towards the
crowd. But during this period, an iconic
image emerged from Sachin's farewell Test
at the Wankhede Stadium - that of Sachin
Tendulkar walking out to bat for one last
time in international cricket and looking
towards the heavens.
The picture clicked by Atul Kamble of
Mid-day newspaper encapsulated all the
emotions in one frame. He won the prestigious Wisden-MCC Cricket Photograph of
the Year 2013 award for the photo. We
caught up with Kamble to understand the
process that went into taking the iconic picture and what the photograph meant to
him. It was Sachin Tendulkar's last match
so as a photographer, I had the same
amount of curiosity that a die hard cricket
fan has. I had this one thing in mind. It
was his last match so I needed to click a

memorable picture which I would

remember forever. My Sports editor Clayton Murzello always tells
me "Concentrate on off-beat pictures more and not action". Most
photographers concentrate on
action so I had my Sport editor's
instructions in my mind that day.
The match started on 14
November and Sachin came to
bat that afternoon. Most papers
the next day carried a photo of
Sachin walking down the dressing room
steps with the crowd in the backdrop. I too
had clicked that picture but wasn't
impressed with it.
But the next day, I told myself, I have
to get a good one today. I had prepared
myself. I had been covering cricket since
1996 at the Wankhede stadium so I knew
in which areas of the stadium you get proper light. In my mind, I knew that there
should be a framing of Sachin coming out of
the dressing room. At Wankhede, when you
get out of the dressing room, the sun light
directly beams on you in the gap between
the MCA pavilion stand and the main
pavilion. Play starts at 9.30 am, so I had
taken my position from 9 am itself, exactly
opposite the pavilion near the North Stand
at the Tata End. After a survey, I thought
this framing was proper. The rest of the
photographers were approximately 20-25
feet away on either side of me. I positioned
myself in such a way that I could see the
dressing room staircase, the crowd and the
sunlight streaming in. In most cases,
Sachin looks towards the heavens after
reaching the ground, but given that this
was the morning sun and because of its
positioning, almost all of Wankhede on the
dressing room side is covered with shadow
for nearly one hour.

the women's singles title of

the $700,000 China Open
Super Series Premier but
compatriot
Kidambi
Srikanth grabbed all the
headlines by pulling off the
biggest upset of his career

when he beat twotime

Olympic
champion Lin Dan
to win the men's
singles title here
Sunday.
While
sixth seeded Saina
won her second
Super Series title
of 2014, after
Australian Open in June, by
overcoming Japanese Akane
Yamaguchi 21-12, 22-20 in
42
minutes,
Srikanth
stunned the five-time World
Champion Chinese 21-19,
21-17 in 46 minutes at the
Haixia
Olympic
Sport
Center. Srikanth on the eve
of the summit clash said that
it was his childhood dream to
play 'Super' Dan in a final,

that too in his own backyard.

Come Sunday, he not only
fulfilled his dream but went
one step better by ousting
the legendary Chinese in
straight games to earn his
first win in three outings
against Dan. Srikanth,
ranked No.16 in the world,
took off well and fast by
going into a 9-4 lead in the
first game.

Don't blame Srinivasan only,

BCCI should face the music too
we know for sure.
N ow
The fig leaf covering N

Srinivasan
has
been
removed. He is the target of
an investigation, under the
supervision
of
Indias
Supreme Court no less. This
is no small thing. As
Firstpost
sports
editor
Ashish
Magotra
has
detailed, the playbook for
Srinivasan and the BCCI
has been to point out the
(suspended) board president
was never the subject of an
investigation. Not only was
that untrue, the Supreme
Court
made
it
clear
Srinivasan is guilty of some
sort of impropriety or misde-

meanour.
The
ground, then, has
shifted considerably
and the tremors
must have been
heard within the
BCCIs corridors of
power. Former board
president Shashank
Manohar,
a
Srinivasan advocateturned-opponent, has
fired the first salvo,
saying the BCCI is at
its lowest ebb today
because of the ambitions of one man. But that is
an attempt to rewrite history. The BCCI is at this point
because of the BCCI. Every

single person on the board,

not just Srinivasan, bares
some responsibility for the
sorry state of the game in
India.

K

amaal R Khan has done it again. Objectifying

actresses on Twitter and tagging them is not new
for this actor, but this time he has been rightly
reprimanded by none other than Bollywood actress
Sonakshi Sinha. On Wednesday, the actor, during his
usual banter on Twitter said, "Pls RT this if you think
tat @SonakshiSinha has biggest butt in Bollywood."
While Kamaal's comments about Bollywood celebrities is not new, what came as a pleasant surprise is
unlike other celebrities, Sonakshi Sinha chose to react to
his tweet.

Single, white, female Kalki

"vaste" (read: Waste) of (your) time: poster
releases of PK, the controversies surrounding
them, the guessing game about Aamir Khan's character in the film, efforts to spot Sushant Singh Rajput in
the trailer and listening to the new PK song, which is
aptly called "Waste of Time". Remember Hrithik
Roshan in Koi Mil Gaya? Picture him, just about half
his height, with scary bug eyes, arched eyebrows and
flappy ears, and you have Aamir Khan of PK. Also,
while you are at it, try to recall Preity Zinta's horrible
haircut from Lakshya and replace Zinta's face with
Anushka Sharma's. Et voila, you know the two actors
in "Waste of Time". Now, to imagine the picturisation
of this song, try to recall Katrina Kaif dancing in a
row of fountains, in a sheer dress, in Jab Tak Hai
Jaan. Now replace Kaif with Khan, in a hat and floral-printed shirt. The rest of the time, Sharma
babysits Khan around New Delhi wiping his
sweaty head and his milkshake moushtaches as he
stares at her with his creepy stalker eyes.

Mamta Kulkarni, husband

0's hit actress

Mamta
Kulkarni and
her husband, Vicky
Goswami, were
detained in Kenya
today for alleged
drug trafficking.
According to media
reports the actress
and her husband
are currently being
questioned by the
police and if found
guilty, she will be
deported to India while her husband will be deported
to United States. Goswami, who previously lived in
Dubai, was arrested for trafficking mandrax and was
sentenced for 25 years, however, later he was released
because of his good conduct. Kulkarni debuted with
Tirangaa in 1992 and has several hits like Krantiveer
(1994), Karan Arjun (1995) and Baazi (1996). The
actress was considered the pin-up girl of the 90s and
acted with several big stars in her time. However, in
2001, after Dev Anand's film Censor, she renounced
filmdom and went away with Goswami to Dubai.
Media reports claim that Goswami was let off last
year in November and he along with Kulkarni shifted
to Nairobi from Dubai. Reportedly the couple converted to Islam and own a real-estate and hotel business.

here are some things you would

understand only if you have lived
in Mumbai traffic, local trains,
the stench of the sea, the divide between
SoBo and the rest of Mumbai and what a
nightmare house hunting can be. And if
you thought that celebrities are shielded
from the woes of having to deal with nagging brokers, irate landlords and absurd
housing society laws, let actress Kalki
Koechlin set you straight. Recently The
Times of India reported Koechlin has finally found a place to stay. After Koechlin separated from her Anurag Kashyap, she
moved out of his house in Andheri and
rented a place near Kashyap's bungalow.
After the year-long lease ended, she started
looking for a new place and that's when the
ordeals began. The actress recounts, "I had
earlier found a place and really liked it, but

just when I was about to get it, the

woman met me and drastically
increased the price. Then, at
another place, as soon
as they found
out that it is
for a celebrity,
they refused as they
said that they didn't
want media and stuff
there. Plus being a gori
skin, there is a huge
stereotype attached
to how you will be."
Koechlin also
took to Twitter
to complain
about the difficulty of finding
a place.

atrina Kaif has been trying hard to please her

future in-laws. From visiting the ailing would be
dad-in-law Rishi Kapoor in hospital to taking
would be momin-law Neetu
Singh out for dinner, Kaif has been
doing everything
that's expected of a
Kapoor bahu but it
seems it still isn't

Ranbir Kapoor's

media is abuzz with
the news that the
actress will be
moving in with Ranbir and on the other, a photograph
shared by Neetu Singh on her Instagram account is making
headlines because apparently Singh cropped Kaif out of it.
The photograph was initially posted by Kapoor's cousin
Natasha Nanda and had Kaif standing at the back.
However, when Singh chose to share the same photo, she
decided to crop the actress out of it and keep only her family members. It is difficult to say what might have prompted
Singh to such a step.

Draft civil aviation policy geared to

face new global & domestic demands
New Delhi

he Draft Civil Aviation Policy which is

geared to face new global and domestic
demands in terms of providing better services and conveniences to fliers, and recommends that airports are to be designed as
multi-modal hubs was released here
recently.
Releasing the Draft Civil Aviation
Policy, Civil Aviation Minister, Ashok
Gajapathi Raju Pusapati said, It is a step
towards making civil aviation a vibrant
sector in our country, to rise to its full
potential, adding that the new Civil
Aviation Policy is expected to be in place by
January 2015.
The Draft has been released for consultation with public and stakeholders
within three weeks, after which six to
seven groups of experts would be constituted to interact with stakeholders and
review the inputs received during the
process. Also speaking on the occasion,
Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, V
Somasundaran highlighted the salient
features of the Draft Civil Aviation Policy
in terms of better services and conveniences to flyers. The Draft notes that
airports are to be designed as integrated
multi-modal hubs, so that they provide
the best possible service levels as well as
potential for growth. An integrated

multi-modal hub should include rail,

metro, bus and truck connectivity as well
as accommodation and other services, he
added.
While developing airports, it is equally
essential to ensure that related sectors
such as access to manufacture, business,
tourism and pilgrim centres are developed.

This needs to be done in association with

other Central Government Departments as
well as the State Government/Union
Territory, he said.
Further, the six metropolitan airports
at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata,
Bangalore and Hyderabad would be developed as major international hubs and

would in future be the main

access points for international travel to and from
India. Significantly, the
Draft puts emphasis on
rationalizing the cost of
Aviation Turbine Fuel
(ATF). Due to high rates of
taxes, the cost of ATF in
India is 40 to 45 per cent
higher than the international costs. Steps will be
taken in association with
the Ministry of Finance and
State Governments to
rationalize the rate of taxes
so that our costs are competitive.
Regarding development
of the cargo sector, the
Government proposes to
substantially develop the
transport of cargo by air for
which there is considerable
potential. To achieve the objective, the six
metro airports will be developed as regional cargo hubs, integrating multi-modal
transport facilities, cold chains and other
commodity specific requirements. The
Draft Civil Aviation Policy is also available
on the website of the Ministry of Civil
Aviation: civilaviation.gov.in.

Need for creation of job opportunities

in services & manufacturing sector: FM
New Delhi
Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley has stressed the
need for creation of jobs in the services and manufacturing
sector so that the large segments of under-employed population in the agriculture sector could get meaningful
employment. The Finance Minister was speaking at the
Services Conclave 2014 here recently. He highlighted the
importance of the services sector exports to compensate for
the deficit in the merchandise exports.
Jaitley said that the Government is making efforts to
raise the share of manufacturing sector from 15 per cent to
25 per cent of GDP. Highlighting the sectors of the economy that could spearhead the growth in the services
exports, hesaid that the Indian pharmaceutical sector has
the potential of providing global quality health care in a
very cost effective manner. Noting that there was an abundance of quality scientists and research professionals,
Jaitley stressed that India could become a hub for settingup of R&D sectors. Further, considering that tourism sector needed a push by providing quality hotels, faster
domestic travel, easier visa/visa-on-arrival/E-visa facili-

ties and cleaner trains etc., Jaitley said the

tourism sector could be a driver of services
export from India.
As far as the entertainment sector is concerned, he noted that 1/6th of the global eyeballs emanated from India and hence there
was an immense scope for services export
from this sector. The Minister highlighted
that India could become a regional hub for
providing quality education.
Earlier, delivering the special address,
Minister of State for Commerce and
Industry, Nirmala Sitharaman said that
there was an immense untapped potential in
the services sector that needs to be harnessed for increasing the share of Indias
export in the global services arena.
Sitharaman listed the sectors of entertainment, wellness, hospitality and professional
services that could provide a suitable platform for services export from India.
