MCYS MEDIA RELEASE NO: 36/2006

DATE OF ISSUE: 07/10/2006

GOVERNMENT APPOINTS NATIONAL STEERING COMMITTEE ON RACIAL

AND RELIGIOUS HARMONY

A National Steering Committee (NSC) on Racial and Religious

Harmony has been appointed to be the national forum for apex ethnic and
religious groups to dialogue and build trust across racial and religious
groups in Singapore.

2 The NSC on Racial and Religious Harmony replaces the NSC on

Inter-Racial Confidence Circles (IRCCs), which charted strategic directions
and provided broad guidance for the IRCCs.

3 The repositioned NSC supports the Community Engagement

Programme (CEP) launched by Prime Minister in February 2006 and will
strengthen social resilience through engagement of religious and ethnic-
based organisations.

4 In addition to the existing roles, the NSC will provide a national

platform for ethnic and religious leaders to dialogue, build a network of
trust, and exchange views on developments in their respective
communities. The NSC will also formulate strategies to strengthen
engagement across ethnic and religious organisations, and facilitate two-
way communication between the Government and ethnic and religious
groups in times of crises.

NSC Chairperson and Members

5 The NSC is chaired by Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for

Community Development, Youth and Sports, and comprises top leaders
from apex religious organisations as well as racial and community-based
organisations.

6 The NSC has 21 members (including the Chairperson), drawing from

their vast and valuable expertise and experience. Details of NSC members
are at Annex 1.
