CE 2040: HYDRAULIC ENGINEERING

Tutorial - 1
1. A cylindrical gate of 4m diameter, 2m long has water on its both sides as shown in fig.
Determine the magnitude, location and direction of the resultant force exerted by the water
on the gate. Find also the least weight of the cylinder so that it may not be lifted away
from the floor.

2. A thin plate of very large area is placed in a gap of height h with oils of viscosities m and
m on the two sides of the plate. The plate is pulled at a constant velocity V. Calculate the
position of the plate so that:
i) The shear force on the two sides of the plate is equal
ii) The force required to drag the plate is minimum.
Assume viscous flow and neglect all end effects.
3. The space between two square flat parallel plates is filled with oil. Each side of the plate is
60cm. The thickness of the oil film is 12.5 mm. The upper plate, which moves at 2.5 meter
per second, requires a force of 98.1N to maintain the speed. Determine:
i) The dynamic viscosity of the oil in poise, and
ii) The kinematic viscosity of the oil in stokes if the specific gravity of the oil is 0.95.
4. Suppose that glycerine is flowing (T=20 oC) and that the pressure gradient dp
kN

dx

is -1.6

. What are the velocity and shear stress at a distance of 12mm from the wall if the
m3
space B between the walls is 5.0cm? What are the shear stress and velocity at the wall?
The velocity distribution for viscous flow between stationary plates is
1 dp
u=By - y 2
2m dx

5. A water column in a glass tube is used to measure the pressure in a pipe. The tube is 1 in
4
in diameter. How much of the water column is due to surface- tension effects? What
would be the surface-tension effects if the tube were 1 in .or 1 in diameter?

6. A roller gate is shown in fig. It is cylindrical form of 6.0m diameter. It is placed on the
dam. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant force due to water acting on the
gate when the water is just going to spill. The length of the gate is given 10m.

7. The velocity distribution for water (20 C) near a wall is given by u = a y

o

, where a =

10 m/s, b = 2mm, and y is the distance from the wall in mm. Determine the shear stress in
the water at y = 1mm.
8. A log of wood 0.8 m diameter and 6m length is floating in river water. Find the depth of
log in water when the specific gravity of the wooden log is 0.7.
9. Unit weight of sea water at the surface is 1025 kgf/m3 MPa. Determine the unit weight of
sea water at a depth of 3km below the surface.
10.
Determine the total pressure and centre of pressure on an isosceles triangular plate of
base 5m and altitude 5m when the plate is immersed vertically in an oil of sp.gr 0.8. The
base of the plate is 1m below the free surface of water.
