MATH1041 - Week 12 Computer Test Information

In Week 12, there is a computer test that will be held in your Computer Lab Class. You must attempt the
test in the tutorial in which you are formally enrolled. This is the timetabled MATH1041 computer class
in room RC-M020 on your timetable. The test will only be accessable from the RC-M020 labs during the
scheduled lab times and not available remotely like the previous MapleTA quizzes. If you are unable to
attend your scheduled lab please contact the Lecturer, Justin Wishart ( j.wishart@unsw.edu.au), well in
advance.
You will be given your own test, generated by MapleTA, which differ from those of other students in
your class. You will input your answers to the generated questions directly to MapleTA with the exception
that graphical plots need to be saved on the desktop. To keep the integrity of the test, all access to the
internet, will be blocked for the test with the exception of the MapleTA website. A shortcut hyperlink icon
to MapleTA will be on your desktop after you login at your test time. All network drives will be blocked
during the test as well.
A document has been created to demonstrate how to save a plot as a PDF to the desktop.
Test structure
The test will consist of a few simple questions involving calculation of specific probability statements (see
MapleTA practice test questions) and some questions which involves inference with both a hypothesis test
and confidence interval question involving randomly generated datasets. It will contain many smaller subquestions (multiple choice, numeric answer, interpretation comments) and plot creation. For plot creation,
MapleTA does not support file uploads so you will have to save your plot as a PDF to the desktop and this
will be collected by the system once you log out (or are automatically logged out when the lab class finishes).
This automatic log out time will likely be at 5 minutes to the hour of your lab class and you will be given
notice of when it will happen. More detail on the test length below.
Test Length
The test will be available on MapleTA during your scheduled lab time and will be timed at 40minutes long.
MapleTA will show the time remaining in the browser. The test will be available for a 50 minute window
during your lab class. This 50 minute window will begin at 5 minutes past the hour and end at at 5 minutes
to the hour and the test will only be accessible during this window. For example, if your lab time is 12pm
1pm, then the test is available from 12:05pm until 12:55pm and once you start the test you are allowed a
maximum of 40minutes to complete the test. So if you start the test when it first opens at 12:05pm, you
will have 40minutes to do the test and it will finish at 12:50pm.
On the other hand, if you are late and do not arrive at the lab to start the test in MapleTA until 12:20pm
you will have less time to do the test. For example, if you start at 12:20pm, the test will still finish at 5
minutes to the hour at 12:55pm and will consequently leave you with only 35 minutes to do the test. The
time remaining in the MapleTA browser will properly reflect this.
Recommended preparation
To prepare for the test I recommend that you:
1. Revise and understand the Lecture material from Slide 5.119.56 (This corresponds to the classroom/lab material covered in Weeks 6-10).
2. Attempt the practice questions for the test available on MapleTA, both the computation of specific
probabilities and statistical values using a computer and the creation of plots. Try to exactly recreate the required plot that MapleTA generates including appropriate axes and titles. There will be
allowances for differences in Histograms since they depend on which columns widths and locations are
selected. However, the boxplots, bar charts and quantile plots you create should look the same.

3. Make sure you know how to save a plot to PDF (see document on Moodle).
4. Know how to easily copy and paste the data from MapleTA to R/RStudio or Excel (see document on
Moodle).
What you will have access to during the test
As stated earlier, all internet access (except MapleTA) will be blocked and your network drive will be blocked.
Your previous profile will also not exist during the test. So during the test youll have a clean desktop
which contains the following.
The R and Excel How To Manual PDFs.
The PDF demonstrating how to save a plot to PDF on the Desktop.
The PDF demonstrating how to easily copy comma-separated values to R or Excel.
A link to the MapleTA website.
You will also have access to the R, Excel and Rstudio software (along with other sofware such as a web
browser and Microsoft Word).
