Bitumen Enamel

Description
Bitumen Enamel is an important part of the coating system
for the corrosion of onshore and offshore pipelines.
A w ide range temperature grade suitable for hot oil lines
throughout the w orld. For in service temperatures up to 75 C,
with glass fiber inner and Bitumen impregnated glass fiber outer
wrap

Appearance

Bitumen Enamel

Bitumen Enamel is black and supplied in solid form for

melting dow n, packed in steel drums or Polly bag.

Application
When used in conjunction w ith
Synthetic Type 'B' Primer it provides long-ter m protection to steel
pipelines both internal & external and is accepted by many Water Authorities throughout the w orld.
Bitumen Enamel is applied at temperature betw een 220 to 240C using a standard flood coating
weir. During storage, the Bitumen Enamel should be kept at temperature of 180C to 200C w ith
constant stirring. Enamel kept at 140 C or higher temperature for more than 5 hours must be
discarded. Offering the follow ing protection:
Chemical Stability
Low Water Absorption
High Electrical Resistive
Permanent Corrosion Protection
Resistant to Cathodic Disbanding

Preparation And Application

Enamel should be broken up into small pieces approx. 2kg and loaded into
the kettle. For the first 30 mines, heat should be applied slowly until there
is a quantity of melted enamel on the bottom of the kettle. After this, the
burners may be increased to full output and the kettle fully loaded, using
pieces of enamel not more than 9kg in weight. Kettles used previously for
Coal Tar should be thoroughly cleaned before use and vice-versa. The
quantity of Enamel remaining in the kettle on re-heating should not
exceed 10% of the fresh charge.
It is of the utmost importance to have a temperature recorder fitted to the
kettle at all times and should be double checked from time to time. The
Enamel should be stirred at all times during use, and apart from reloading the lid must remain closed to avoid loss of volatiles.
In the event of Plant breakdown, or for any other reason, heat should be
withdrawn from the kettle and the Enamel temperature dropped to
approximately 200C (400F) and kept at this temperature and still
agitated until ready for use. The maximum temperature in the kettle
should never exceed 250C (482F). Enamel above this temperature
should be rejected. Enamel held at application temperature for more than
8 hours should be rejected if after testing found to be out of specification.
Enamel should not be applied to the primed pipe when the metal
temperature is below 7C (45F) and care should be taken to ensure that
the pipe is free from dust, dirt, oil and moisture. If the speed of operation
or high ambient temperatures prevent the pipe from hardening sufficiently
it is advisable to use water quenching to avoid skid damage. 'V' Boards
are recommended for storing the completed pipe section. This helps
prevent damage and facilitates easy holiday detection and repairs. After
this, the completed pipe can be stacked. This should be done using sand
or straw filled bags as spacers. Where pipes are to be stored in the direct
sunlight, the application of solar coat Protection is recommended.
