READING
The Vasco de Gama Bridge

Id like to talk about the cable-stayed bridge, which is a relatively recent type of bridge
design. Its characterized by large upright supports, which transmit the load into the ground,
and steel cables, which are stretched between the supports and the deck, and give a very
elegant appearance to the bridge. A good example of a cable-stayed bridge is the Vasco de
Gama Bridge, near Lisbon in Portugal. Its the longest bridge in Europe, with a total length of
17,200 meters and spans the Tagus River. As an engineering project, the bridge was a great
success and built at a cost of one billion US dollars. It took only eighteen months to construct and was
completed in 1998, slightly ahead of schedule.
The technical details of the Vasco de Gama Bridge are impressive. As I said, its a cablestayed bridge, using a fan arrangement of cables, and H-pylons. The pylons are made of
reinforced concrete and each pylon is 155 meters high. There are 192 cables and the total span
of the bridge is 450 meters long. The bridge has being designed to ensure a minimum seismic
damage. It can withstand wind speeds of 250 kilometers an hour and its design life expectancy
is 120 years. The length of the bridge meant that engineers had to take the earths curvature
into account when sitting the supports.
The Vasco de Gama Bridge is a motorway bridge and allows traffic between the north
and the south of Portugal and bypass Lisbon, cutting journey times and reducing congestion in
Lisbon. Traffic travelling north pays a toll of a fifteen- minute drive across the bridge, but theres
no toll for southbound traffic. The bridge was built by an international consortium and financed
by European and the private sector.

Tom: Where will it be?
Galal: Between Morocco and Spain. Itll connect Europe with
Africa.
Tom: What are the specifications of the bridge?
Galal: It will be almost 15 km long. In our design, the bridge will
have two spans. Each span will be 4800 m long.
Tom: Thats a very long span. How will that be possible?
Galal: The bridge will have three steel pylons, on concrete piers. The pylons will be 1000 m high.
The deck will be very light and strong. Itll be made of fiberglass.

County Starts Using Electric Buses
(8/2/2006) http://www.cdlponline.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=activity2&topicID=8&storyID=245
A city in California recently got some new buses. They cost $490,000 each. The new
buses are different than the old ones.
These new buses are better for the environment. They are
called hybrid buses. They run on diesel and electric power. This
will help keep the air cleaner.
One bus driver said that the air smells much cleaner
when he drives the new buses. He smells diesel all day when he
drives the old ones.
The company that builds the buses had many good things to say about them. For
example, they said that they use a lot less fuel. They also said that they are 90 percent cleaner
for the environment. The buses are very quiet too.
The buses have a diesel engine in the back and batteries on top. When the engine startsup it is powered by electricity. Then the diesel power takes over. The motor recharges the
batteries.
Over time the city would like to replace all 50 of their buses with the new hybrid buses.
They hope to do this over the next three years. The city has had help purchasing the buses with
grant money.

THE LIFE OF A COLLEGE STUDENT

A.
Read about Mikes week. Then, choose one day from his routine and compare
it with your own routine. Compare the times and the activities.
Mike is a Secondary Education (Science) major. He is a senior from Tulsa, Oklahoma.

MONDAY
8:45 Wake up, get in the shower
9:02 Get dressed. Watch Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN2. Check Facebook, email, blogs, and
anything else online I feel like doing.
9:54 Go to the bus stop to catch the 9:58 to campus.
10:14 Read the paper until my
10:30 Physics class starts. I take notes, answer questions, and wish I was anywhere else in the world.
11:30 Analytical Chem starts. Again, I take notes and do my best to pay attention.
12:22 Chem lets out. I go off campus to eat lunch at a fast food restaurant.
1:45 I head (go) to Willard to use a computer lab until my next class.
2:30 Physics lab starts. Its actually mildly interesting this week, so it didnt quite feel like a 2 hour trip to the
dentist.
4:20 Catch the bus home.
4:45 Videogames with the roommates!
6:20 Make a sandwich for dinner.
6:35 Remember that I have class at
6:45, frantically drive back to campus.
6:45 Educating the Exceptional Learner. Not a bad class, just a lot to take in 2 hours at a time.
9:00 Get home, do some homework. Pre-labs for Tuesday, and read some for Wednesday.
10:30 More videogames with the roommates.
11:45 Bed!
TUESDAY
8:45 Wake up and shower. My first class is always at
10:30, so I just leave my alarm set for the same time every day.
9:05 Took a longer shower today. The usual morning Internet routine: Facebook, email, and watching ESPN.
9:35 Im actually hungry today, so I eat some blueberry muffins for breakfast.
9:58 Bus to campus.
10:20 Read the paper until Astronomy starts.
10:30 Astronomy lecture. I enjoy this class, mainly because its all stuff I already know and am interested in.
11:45 Astronomy ends. I dont have long, so I run to the library to grab a sandwich before lab starts.
12:15 I get to Chem lab early to get set up. Hopefully Ill get out early this way.
12:30 Start Chem lab. Its a boring experiment about analyzing weights and statistics.
3:00 Meet my physics lab partner at the library to work on homework thats due Friday.
4:20 Catch the bus home.
4:45 As is tradition, videogames with the roommates.
6:00 Go to Taco Bell with my roommates for dinner.
6:45 Homework. I finish the physics assignment, do pre-class reading, and work some chemistry problems.

58

9:30 Watch a movie with my roommates.

12:00 Read a little bit, and then go to bed.

WEDNESDAY
8:39 Wake up before my alarm. I HATE that. Get in the shower.
8:55 Breakfast and daily Internet.
9:58 Bus to campus.
10:20 Read the paper in physics class until time to start.
10:30 Physics.
11:30 Analytical chemistry. Even though its kind of a boring subject, I feel really good about it, mainly because
so far I understand it without needing to work too hard.
12:20 Eat a granola bar as I go to my
12:30 class. Today is my least favorite day, because I have no time to eat a real lunch.
12:30 Methods in Secondary Education. This class is really interesting to me, because its all about what I want
to do after graduation.
3:30 Go eat at Joes with some people from my class. We all miss eating lunch at a normal time.
5:00 Get a ride home from a classmate, and beat my roommates at videogames again.
6:30 Cook up some Hamburger Helper for dinner. Its one of the best meals for broke college kids.
7:10 Homework. I get ready for day 2 of this weeks Chem lab, and read up on some Astronomy.
9:00 Go to my neighbors apartment to hang out and play some more videogames.
11:15 Get home and read some more (for fun, not for school).
12:00 Bedtime!
THURSDAY
8:45 Get up with the alarm today.
8:59 Get dressed. I prepare a big breakfast.
9:13 Watch ESPN and morning internet.
9:58 Bus to campus.
10:22 Read the paper until Astronomy starts.
10:30 Astronomy.
11:45 Astronomy ends. I realize that I forgot to pack my lunch, and grab another sandwich at the library. I
should have remembered, it gets expensive eating on campus like this all the time.
12:20 Talk to friends in a different chemistry lab in the Physical Science building lobby.
12:30 Chemistry lab starts. Im done with my experiments and data, and just spend today doing calculations
and finishing the lab report.
2:20 Catch the bus home.
2:45 Naptime! For some reason, Im really tired today.
3:30 Wake up and watch TV.
5:45 Videogames with the roommates. Its a daily tradition since we were freshman.
7:00 Go to Little Caesars for some cheap pizza.
7:10 Eat the cheap pizza while watching Transformers on TV.
8:00 Homework time. I answer pre-class questions for physics, and try to read some Analytical chemistry, but
Im too distracted by the football game on TV.
10:45 Read for fun.

59

12:30 Bedtime. I should have gone to bed earlier, but my book was really interesting.

FRIDAY
8:45 Wake up and shower time. Im already in a good mood, because its FRIDAY!!!
9:02 ESPN and the Internet.
9:20 Blueberry muffins for breakfast.
9:58 Bus to campus.
10:15 Newspaper. Im already thinking about watching football all day on Saturday.
10:30 Physics. Its clear that Im not the only one ready for the weekend; lots of people seem to be eager to
get out of class.
11:30 Analytical chem. Its my last class of the week; therefore it feels like the longest.
12:13 Class is over! The weekend starts now!
12:20 Bus home.
12:45 Time for an extra healthy lunch that consists of a cheap can of Spaghetti-Os.
1:30 Quick nap on the couch.
3:00 My roommates got back from class, so its videogame time.
4:45 Drive back to campus to play sand volleyball with my roommates and our friends from class.
7:30 Dinner at McAllisters.
8:30 Movie night at a friends house. I end up staying really late over there, and the weekend begins!!!

SATURDAY
9:05 Wake up, get in the shower
9:23 Get dressed, eat poptarts, and listen to my favorite loud music from my computer.
9:30 Watch College Gameday Live on ESPN with my roommates.
10:05 Check the weather, and get ready to head to the football stadium.
10:20 10:40 Find our seats in the stadium. We decide that its not really that crowded yet, and our seats wont
get taken if we walk around the covered parts to stay dry.
11:00 Meet up with my dad, who came to town for the game. Hes hungry, so I make him buy me lunch too.
About
3:30 Game ends, and we begin the process of trying to get home through the traffic.
4:05 Finally get home, change out of my wet clothes.
4:30 Make my dad take me to a nice restaurant before he goes home.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF CIVIL ENGINEERS

Civil engineers have a very important role in todays society. They are the people behind
the scenes of construction jobs which result in important buildings and structures throughout
ones city or hometown.
Items that civil engineers must take part in and use include:
chemical testing applications
drafting and design software
electrical test devices and equipment
land surveying techniques and the metric system

Some other specific duties of Civil Engineers are:

Inspect and analyze the proposed construction project.
Go to the site location.
Write detailed reports stating what is acceptable and what needs to be
changed prior to beginning the project.
Check the proposed changes are made before the beginning of the project.
Follow the project from start to finish.
Check on safety features of the project.
Use many different equations and applications.
Have to read and interpret many complex charts, diagrams, maps and reports.

Engineering Technicians
Engineering technicians assist
engineers in designing and testing
new products.

Engineering technicians use the principles and theories of science, engineering,

and mathematics to solve technical problems in research and development,
manufacturing, sales, construction, inspection, and maintenance. Their work is
more narrowly focused and application-oriented than that of scientists and
engineers. Many engineering
technicians assist engineers and scientists,
especially in research and development. Others work in quality control,
inspecting products and processes, conducting tests, or collecting data. In
manufacturing, they may assist in product design, development, or production.
Although many workers who repair or maintain various types of electrical,
electronic, or mechanical equipment are called technicians, those workers are
classified as installation, maintenance, and repair occupations.
Engineering technicians who work in research and development build or set up
equipment, prepare and conduct experiments, collect data, calculate or record
results, and help engineers or scientists in other ways, such as making prototype
versions of newly designed equipment. They also assist in design work, often
using computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) equipment.
Civil engineering technicians help civil engineers plan and oversee the
construction of highways, buildings, bridges, dams, wastewater treatment
systems, and other structures. Some estimate construction costs and specify

10

15

20

68

materials to be used, and some may even prepare drawings or perform landsurveying duties. Others may set up and monitor instruments used to study
traffic conditions.
25
Environmental engineering technicians work closely with environmental
engineers and scientists in developing methods and devices used in the
prevention, control, or remediation of environmental hazards. They inspect and
maintain equipment related to air pollution and recycling. Some inspect water
and wastewater treatment systems to ensure that pollution control requirements
are met.
30
Industrial engineering technicians study the efficient use of personnel, materials,
and machines in factories, stores, repair shops, and offices. Working under the
direction of industrial engineers, they prepare layouts of machinery and
equipment, plan the flow of work, conduct statistical studies of production time
or quality, and analyze production costs.
