Non-Negotiable Policies

Students will not be allowed to go for any external study

programmes in their final term of coursework**.

Students who go on an external study programme in Term 2 or

Modified Term 2 will not be allowed to register for SMU courses in
either or both Term 3A/Term 3B. Similarly, students who go on an
external study programme in Term 3A (e.g. Summer Study
Programme) will not be allowed to register for SMU courses in Term
3B.

** Important: The final term of coursework refers to the last term in

which students will be taking courses. Therefore, no courses should
be registered after the final term of coursework. Students will not
be allowed to go for any external study programmes in their final
term of coursework, even if they have not completed their
internship/community service components (Internship/community
service components are non-coursework requirements).

Non-Negotiable Policies

Students who are taking courses in the immediate next regular term
after the external study term will be required to pay the full term
fees, even if they are left with one course.

Students will be allowed to transfer only one language / language +

immersion# course towards General Education - Arts (GEA) degree
requirement (applicable to students admitted from AY2009-10
onwards). Please note that students may still transfer more than
one language course (whether advanced level or different language)
for credit but the additional language course(s) will not be counted
towards fulfillment of GEA requirement.

# Important: Students going on exchange from AY2011-12 onwards

should note that language + immersion will no longer be approved for
credit transfer. Instead, only those language courses that are
offered by the host universities as credits for their own students
would be considered for transfer towards GEA (above GEA limit
applies).

Credit For Language Courses

(not applicable to single degree law students)

You can only credit a language course as a GE Arts (Language) once. If you have prior knowledge in the
language than you cannot take it.

Studying a language offered in the partner university during your exchange will earn you GE Arts
(Language) credit. It is not automatically 1 credit. Please check the credits allocated to the course at
the partner university and use the Transfer Rate in the Programme @ a Glance to determine the
corresponding SMU credit.

The language course has to be offered by the partner university. No third-party language providers
allowed.

English, Mandarin, Cantonese or any other Dialect courses are not allowed to be transferred back
for credits and will be rejected on your worksheets. Mandarin courses will only be allowed to be
taken by Non-Chinese speaking SMU students (i.e.) Malay or Indian students.

Language Course Requirements:

Course should be done in the semester during the exchange
Course must be at least 36 contact hours, no e-learning or online courses, and no one-on-one courses
conducted by private tutors
100% attendance to be maintained
All course assessment (including exam) to be completed
The grade must appear in the transcript. Language Certificates of Completion / Attendance are not
accepted

Tips for Worksheet Submission

Before starting your worksheet submission:
1.

Know which SMU credits you have yet to complete in view of your graduation (through
your Degree Progression Report).

2.

Know which those required credits you may read outside SMU (from the Academic
guidelines provided by OGL).

3.

Find out what kind of courses qualify for these SMU credits (from the School
Handbook).

4.

Browse the partner universitys course catalogue to find if these credits / courses are
available during your intended semester there.

5.

Create Excel file with all the course information (course codes, course titles, credits,
course descriptions etc).
* Easier to copy and paste information from Excel file into worksheet
* System times out so this is more efficient

Grading & Transcripts

All courses must be taken with a grade and passed in order to receive
transfer of credit.
Only credits from approved courses (via your worksheet) will be
transferred to your SMU programme(s).
According to the host credits, you will get your SMU credit. If the
credits were entered wrongly in the worksheet, the actual transcript will
form the basis of the eventual transferred SMU credits and this is
non-negotiable.
When you have completed your studies abroad, make arrangements for 2
copies of official transcripts to be sent to OGL.
