Textbook
The required textbook for the course is Principles of Microeconomics, 4th Edition by N.
Gregory Mankiw. This should be easy to obtain at the campus bookstore, and it comes
bundled with Aplia, which is the required online study tool. Additionally, if you prefer to use an
online version of the text in lieu of a hard copy your Aplia registration fee provides you
electronic access to the textbook.
Aplia
Important! Read the Aplia registration instructions handout carefully. The textbook/Aplia
package (available in the bookstore) will provide you with a Payment Code. If you are
purchasing a textbook bundle, do not pay online. Use the Payment Code provided in the textbook
bundle. If you choose not to purchase the textbook bundle, the cost of Aplia is $60 per student
and can be paid online.
What is Aplia? Aplia is an interactive online tool that offers problem sets, news analyses,
tutorials, and economic experiments in conjunction with the textbook. Aplia contains the
complete content of the Mankiw text and includes both practice and graded problem sets which
you will be assigned each week. The practice sets give you immediate feedback about whether
your answer is right or wrong and an explanation of the correct answer. They are not counted as
part of your homework grade. Use them to check your understanding of the material. If you are
confident you can go directly to the graded problem set, and refer back to the practice set only if
you want some additional help. The graded problem sets have firm due dates that you will see in
Aplia. You can change your answers as many times as you like before the due date has passed.
Once the due date has passed, the grade will be recorded and it will not be possible to change
your answers or complete the assignment at this point. Each assignment will be posted at least
one week prior to its due date. Do them early to avoid any emergencies preventing your
completion before the due date. After the due date, you will be able to see the correct answers
and the explanations for graded problems.
The Aplia assignments (even the graded ones) are intended to be a learning tool. Even if you
miss a question, the idea is that you will learn from your mistake and be better prepared for the
future. For this reason, you will receive 100% of the available homework points if your score on
Aplia is 80% or higher at the end of the semester. For Aplia scores below 80%, an additional
20% will be added to calculate your homework grade. For example, if you score 70% on your
Aplia assignments, then you will receive 90% of the available homework points.
Class Meetings
You may find that colored pens, pencils or markers and a straight edge for drawing accurate
graphs are helpful note taking tools. A simple calculator will also be helpful. You are not
allowed to use graphing calculators on your exam.
During class you are expected to be courteous and respectful to both your professor and
classmates. Please turn your cell phone to vibrate so that a phone call does not disturb the
lecture.
While I strongly encourage you to attend each lecture, attendance is only beneficial if you are
going to actively participate in the lecture by taking notes, working practice problems and
actively analyzing your exam as we go over the correct answers. Under no circumstances will
sleeping or text messaging be allowed in class. If you are not going to focus your attention to
learning the material discussed in class that day, there is no need to attend the lecture.
Exams
Over the course of the semester, you will take 4 unit exams and one comprehensive final exam.
While this may be more exams than you are used to, I strongly believe that exams can be a
significant learning tool. The larger number of exams allows us to break the course down into
more manageable segments of information and also allows for more in depth analysis of what
you have learned.
In addition to knowing the relevant definitions and formulas, you will need to be able to show
some independent thought and analysis. The goal of an exam is not to demonstrate your
memorization skills, but rather your ability to apply the terms and concepts you have learned.
I spend a significant amount of time reviewing graded exams. Please take the in class review as
an opportunity to learn what you may have missed before. We do not go over the exams in class
just so you can confirm your exam was scored properly.
I DO NOT GIVE MAKE-UP EXAMS!!!! If you are unable to attend one of the unit exams,
then that will be the grade that you drop. The only exception to this policy is if there is a conflict
with exam dates and religious holidays or university athletic travel. If either of these situations
applies, you must notify me during the first two weeks of class what dates you will be absent
with appropriate documentation. You must bring a picture ID to all examinations.

Grading Policy
Your course grade is determined as follows:
A letter grade of F will be assigned to all students accumulating less than 330 points.
Academic Integrity
The faculty expects from its students a high level of responsibility and academic honesty.
Because the value of an academic degree depends upon the absolute integrity of the work done
by the student for that degree, it is imperative that a student demonstrate a high standard of
individual honor in his or her scholastic work. Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited
to, statements, acts or omissions related to applications for enrollment or the award of a degree,
and/or the submission as one’s own work or material that is not one’s own. As a general rule,
scholastic dishonesty involves one of the following acts: cheating, plagiarism, collusion and/or
falsifying academic records. Students suspected of academic dishonesty are subject to
disciplinary proceedings.
Plagiarism, especially from the web, from portions of papers for other classes, and from any
other source is unacceptable and will be dealt with under the university’s policy on plagiarism
(see general catalog for details). This course will use the resources of turnitin.com, which
searches the web for possible plagiarism and is over 90% effective.
Email Use
The University of Texas at Dallas recognizes the value and efficiency of communication
between faculty/staff and students through electronic mail. At the same time, email raises some
issues concerning security and the identity of each individual in an email exchange. The
university encourages all official student email correspondence be sent only to a student’s U.T.
Dallas email address and that faculty and staff consider email from students official only if it
originates from a UTD student account. This allows the university to maintain a high degree of
confidence in the identity of all individual corresponding and the security of the transmitted
information. UTD furnishes each student with a free email account that is to be used in all
communication with university personnel. The Department of Information Resources at U.T.
Dallas provides a method for students to have their U.T. Dallas mail forwarded to other accounts.
Disability Services
The goal of Disability Services is to provide students with disabilities educational opportunities
equal to those of their non-disabled peers. Disability Services is located in room 1.610 in the
Student Union. Office hours are Monday and Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Tuesday and
Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Essentially, the law requires that colleges and universities make those reasonable adjustments
necessary to eliminate discrimination on the basis of disability. For example, it may be necessary
to remove classroom prohibitions against tape recorders or animals (in the case of dog guides)
for students who are blind. Occasionally an assignment requirement may be substituted (for
example, a research paper versus an oral presentation for a student who is hearing impaired).
Classes enrolled students with mobility impairments may have to be rescheduled in accessible
facilities. The college or university may need to provide special services such as registration,
note-taking, or mobility assistance. It is the student’s responsibility to notify his or her professors
of the need for such an accommodation. Disability Services provides students with letters to
present to faculty members to verify that the student has a disability and needs accommodations.
