Tomorrows match-up between

Vineland and Millville forms the
longest running rivalry in the state.
{ BY MICKEY BRANDT }

ou can read about it online, stream it, DVR it,

and watch it on demand now, but the VinelandMillville football game rivalry itself is unchanged
since 1893. Most sources record that Vineland High is
up 63-60-19, but Millville is threatening that lead with
wins in the last five Thanksgiving Day matchups.
The Thunderbolts (4-5) are favored, but the Fighting
Clan (3-6) has shown promise in its wins, notably in the
36-21 triumph over Washington Township in a South
Jersey Group V consolation game on November 13.
Millville qualified for the state playoffs but faced a
tougher opponent and fell to Rancocas Valley, 52-29,
the next day.
The historic clashes between Vineland and
Millville form the longest-running high school series
in New Jersey, 12th longest in the nation in years
played, and fourth in the nation in number of games.
(There were multiple contests in some of the early
years before Thanksgiving became the sole event.)
The teams have faced each other when both were
powerhouses, when both were weaklings, and when
one was the former and the other the latter. There
have been blowouts and scoreless ties. Millville won by
the bizarre score of 5-0 in 1908. In 1955, both teams
had no losses for the season and a solid VHS team

very once in a while I think Ive

got it all figured out and then
something will happen that will
remind that Im as dumb as I
ever was. Okay, maybe not dumb, but certainly not nearly as smart as I think I am.
For instance, a couple of weeks ago my
wife and I took a church-sponsored bus
trip to see the play, Moses, at one of the
Lancaster playhouses.
Bus trips anywhereespecially
Lancasterare not on my bucket list, but I
figured I owed my wife one for putting up
with me this last year or so.
The ride was one Id made weekly for
my babysitting chores for six or seven
years. Those grandkids are full-time students now and my trips have been
reduced to bi-monthly at best.
The bus trip turned out to be a pretty
nice ride with somebody else doing the
driving.
What surprised me, though, were the
passengers.
As I said, it was church-sponsored, midday and smack in the middle of the week.
Not surprisingly, about 90 percent of
the passengers were retirees like me and
my wife.
Whats surprising is that once we got
going, about half the passengers immediately got on their cell phones or tablets.
I dont travel with any of those things
and I guess I had just assumed that everyone else my age dislikes them as much as
I do.
I used to have a little hand-held, battery-operated Solitaire game that I could
take on plane rides or to the doctors
office or really any place I knew Id have
to wait.
I loved that little game and actually
went through three or four different ones
over the past four or five years.
When the last one broke, my son had
just bought me that Nook tablet and I discovered it had Solitaire and other games,
so I made the transition.
The downside was that I couldnt take
it anywhere.
Of course, that was also the upside,
because I dont believe in doing all those
app/friendly things when you are with
other people.
My mistake was in thinking that everyone else my age thinks the same way I do.
Same thing once we got to the theater.

Everybody piled out and immediately

began taking pictures of the statues and
theaterwith their phones and tablets.
I didnt see a single camera among the
(literally) thousands of people taking
pictures.
The other revelation came after the
show (which was spectacular, incidentally),
when we went to a local buffet place.
As I said, Ive spent a lot of time in and
around the Lancaster area (my daughters
home is 20 minutes from Lancaster on the
back roads) so Ive been to plenty of buffets
over the years.
I cant really say Im a big fan, either.
This time though we went to a place
called Shady Maple, and it was as spectacular as the show.
The place was huge, with a least a
quarter mile of food stations.
And not just the usual chicken, ham
balls and five different types of potatoes.
They had everything from Mexican to
Italian, with two different types of ribs
(Kansas City and North Carolina) and
everything else you could imagine.
The ladies we were sitting with, like
myself, happened to be of German heritage and we exchanged stories about our
favorite growing-up foods and how wellrepresented they were at the buffet.
A few days after the trip, we were having our weekly fish night (my wifes night
to have her favorite fish dinner and I have
hot dogs or grilled cheese).
I was still in my German food phase, so
I got a box of frozen pierogies (not strictly
German, I know), some sour cream, bread
crumbs and sauerkraut.
That may sound like a recipe for disaster, but its also a good way to doctor up
frozen pierogies.
The problem was that my wife insists
on one cook in the kitchen at a time.
Ill make your pierogies, she said.
No, youll turn them into ravioli. I
want pierogies.
Dinner was a little later than usual that
night but I got my pierogies, my way.
***
Thanks to everybody who sent along
suggestions for unique South Jersey gifts. I
decided on homemade salamis and assorted
cheeses from Baglianis in Hammonton. I

Lights On After
School brings
notice to programs
that keep children
safe after the school
day ends. The 15th
anniversary of
Lights on After
School was recently
celebrated nationally. Locally, the occasion was marked at
the After School
programs in
Vinelands public schools by kicking off this school years Healthy U curriculum.
Healthy U includes a nutritional component plus a nonelimination games segment called CATCH (the Coordinated Approach to Childrens Health). Together,
these give the young participants fun and information that lead to a healthy
lifestyle. The YMCA of Vineland coordinates this important program. It is funded
by a grant from Horizon in partnership with the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance.
Lights On After School was enjoyed with a variety of age-appropriate activities. Some classes made drawings about what they learn after school. Other
wrote six-word essays called My Y. All participants received a bookbag.

Vocational Service Month.
2. Recognize the outstanding vocational service performance of an individual by
making that person a Rotary International
Paul Harris Fellow (a $1,000 contribution
in the recipients name is made by the
Club to the Rotary Foundation) and by
awarding the recipient a plaque honoring
his/her selection.
The Rotary Club of Vineland is pleased
to add Robert Scarpa to its list of distinguished recipients.
Scarpa is a lifelong Vineland resident.
After graduating from Vineland High
School he then attended Cumberland
County College, and then on to Atlantic
County College where he received his
State of New Jersey Fire Official
Certification. His career path was an easy
decision for him. His late father and many
other family members were career firemen, and volunteers in our local fire
departments.
Scarpa joined the Vineland Fire
Department in 1986, and rose to the rank
of Captain before his retirement after 25
years of service. Also, from 1999 to present, he is the Operations Manager for the
Summit Investment Properties, LLC, a
commercial real estate holdings company
in New Jersey.
Scarpa has always taken an active part
in helping improve Vineland and
Cumberland County. In 2002 he Joined
the United Way of Greater Cumberland
County and has been a tireless fund raiser,
and was instrumental in strengthening the
composition of the Board of Directors and
keeping the United Way message alive. He
served as Chairperson of the Board of
Directors from 2008 to 2010.
In addition, Robert has served on the
boards of the Greater Vineland Chamber
of Commerce and the Vineland
Downtown Improvement District. He also
served on the Advisory Committee for the
U.S. Postal Service.
More recently and after his retirement,
Scarpa took on the challenge of serving as
the Executive Director of Cumberland
County Habitat for Humanity. The very
fact that when he retired from the
Vineland Fire Department in 2012, he
decided to work for Habitat says a lot
about his dedication to our community.
Robert has taken the vocational skills from
his 25 year career as a public servant and
has applied them to leading and improving the work of Habitat in Cumberland
County.
Scarpa was also honored as a
Hometown Hero in 2011 by The Grapevine
newspaper. I

development plan. Some of the major goals of

the grant initiative are to help at-risk young
people learn leadership and communication
skills, improve their self-esteem, involve them
in life skills training, and refer them to addiction and mental health services, as needed.
The grant is the culmination of work
accomplished by the Cumberland County
Positive Youth Development Coalition which
has been at the forefront of the effort in helping to curb youth delinquency in the County.
Through the commitment of the
Attorney Generals office, we have the first
county-wide Policy Prevention Board in the
state and that is what led to where we are
today, explained Webb-McRae. Citing leadership from law enforcement in all three of
Cumberland Countys cities, especially
Vinelands Police Chief Tim Codispoti.
Webb-McRae was also quick to credit the
chaplains who work with Vineland, Millville
and Bridgetons police departments to intercede when at-risk youth are apprehended,
providing counsel rather than incarcerating.
We cant arrest our way out of trouble [with
young people], said Webb-McRae.
Also speaking at the press conference was
Cumberland County Freeholder Director Joe
Derella, who noted that this initiative meshes
with the Freeholders commitment to improving lives of area residents through education.
Speaking on behalf of the countys chaplains was Pastor Gary Holden, who explained
that this program is an extension of one started
right here in Cumberland County just a few
years ago. We started working with Station
House Adjustments, which is a state-mandated program that calls for youth who are first
offenders to be brought to the station to meet
with chaplains, Holden said. The chaplains
meet with the youth and their families and
then assign them to community service. We
get them to do something to help someone
else. They enjoy it and often want to come
back to volunteer for community service agencies after their mandated four hours is over.
Chris Volker, the Executive Director of the
Boys & Girls Club of Vineland, stated that his
will be the lead agency for the program. The
grant will pay for the hiring of a case manager
and for the services offered by a number of
cooperating agencies throughout the community to get the kids on the right track. Some of
those services might include getting the
youth enrolled in classes to secure a GED or
in drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs.
Transportation costs for getting the youth to
access these services will also be covered by
the grant. Volker added that the grant positions the Boys & Girls Club to go countywide.
According to Tracy Swan of the Walter
Rand Institute at Rutgers University, there
were only six grants awarded by the state AGs
office and Cumberland County was one of only
two to receive the full amount available. I

Traditions have surrounded the game,

sometimes raising it to mythic proportions.
Bonfires (called into question now by safety
concerns), inevitably cold weather (interrupted now by global warming), women
cooking while men attend (a dying art), a
rumble after the game (a fad for many
years), and even an Academic Bowl competition between the schools scholars (which
morphed into a broader series this year) all
contributed to an atmosphere fitting of
lively conversation, if not reality TV.
Urban legend says one year pranksters
or vandals, depending on your town, painted Millville coach John Barboses dog red
and gray. For its part, they say, Millville
adventurers once stole the Vineland cheerleaders pom-poms. Its a fact that a VHS

FOOTBALL
Continued from cover
rocked the legendary MHS one, 27-6,
breaking Millvilles state record-tying 31game winning streak and, in some tellings,
thwarting the Thunderbolts scheduled
appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show.
There have been years when you had to
arrive at the game two hours early to guarantee a seat and those when many fans
arrived after the first quarter. Theres sometimes been driving rain and deep mud,
howling wind and heavy snow, tragic events
and community upheaval, but theres always
been Thanksgiving football.

Both coaches have attempted to instill in
their teams the significance of the game on
the fieldthe only place it ultimately matters.
Its important for them to understand
the tremendous history of the rivalry and
that its about making memories for the
current players that will last a lifetime,
said Millvilles head coach, Jason Durham.
Traditions arent as prevalent today as
they once were and this is an important
and positive one.

school and our community, said Dan Russo,

Vinelands head coach. Russo, who freely
acknowledges that Vineland is rebuilding a
weak football program, said he is grateful
for the support his two years at the helm
has reignited in the community.
Weve been fortunate to have them
behind us as we try to change the culture,
he said. Moving forward is what were
constantly trying to do.
Vinelands season has been rocky as
young players faced the unforgiving Group
V schedule; Millvilles has been plagued by
injuries and off-field issues involving key
starters. Durham said the team tried hard
to overcome those setbacks.
We have worked to stick together and
encourage the young players as they
replaced guys who had more experience.
Our focus has been on trying to do the best
that we can in each moment, he said.
Russo called Vinelands youth movement our strongest point and pointed out
that VHS is now pulling some players away
from both private and public schools competing for talent.
The kids were looking for someone
who had their backs and I have their
backs, the VHS coach said.
For tomorrows showdown, both men
said the keys are basic.
We have to play disciplined football like
we played against Washington Township,
minimize our mistakes, and have fun,
Russo said. Linemen have to make their
blocks, the defense has to swarm to the ball,
everything else will take care of itself.
Durham said, The keys to the game for
us are to tackle well against Vineland backs
and quarterback, finish drives with touchdowns, and win the battle with special
teams.
So, barring a solar explosion or zombie
apocalypse, Ill see you tomorrow at
Gittone Stadium at 10:30 a.m. I

4-H Club Installs Osprey

Platform
Cumberland County 4-H members and
volunteers stepped up to construct and
install nesting habitats for ospreys on the
Maurice River. In order to construct the
nesting platforms, adults cut the wood and
handled the drilling. Kids hammered and
assembled the carriage bolts used to hold
the platform posts together. Suitable
osprey habitat generally means an open
area near water. Four boats carried youth
and adult volunteers out on the Maurice

River to erect the platforms together.

Participating 4-H Members included
Alexis Hider, Jillian Tozer, Lydia and
Brody Bank, Seth Hitchon, Charlie and
Patrick Gandy and Conner Andersen.
In addition to the experience of learning by doing, the volunteers and members
enjoyed an educational talk by Jane
Galetto regarding the challenges the
osprey have faced and successful conservation efforts. Following issues with DDT
in the 1970s New Jerseys 500 mating
pairs of ospreys dwindled to just 40 pairs.
Thanks to conservation efforts, the number of mating pairs is back up to 500.
For more information about 4-H, check

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6
Holiday House Tour in Historic Bridgeton. Bridgeton
puts its historic riches on display once more as New
Jerseys largest National Register Historic District offers
its annual Historic House Tour. This
years East Side and West Side wings
(15 p.m. and 37 p.m.) include 20
historic homes, public buildings and
churches mostly along Commerce
Street, plus more unique food items
and holiday gifts and crafts than ever
at shops in the downtown.
Tour veterans, take note: On the East Side, besides its handsome homes and churches, theres fresh paint and fresh hospitality at the Bridgeton Fire House, a still-functional, lovingly
preserved Arts & Crafts gem. And the nearby Free Public
Librarys Cumberland Banksection, a tiny structure with a big
story, tells not just how it was built and survived the life and budget crises of two
centuries, but the recent saga of its now beautifully-restored nineteenth-century
front door, steps and rails.
Visitors whove never seen Sara Penka demonstrate her mastery of fireplace
cooking should take a detour off Commerce Street for a glimpse into colonial life at
historic Potters Tavern on Broad Street. En route: the just-dedicated new public
mural by Philadelphia artist Cesar Viveros-Herrera, remembering some of Bridgetons
riverfront mills and the work and workers who made industrial history there.
Tour hub is the 1791 David Sheppard House (31 West Commerce), right at the
historic bridge Bridgeton is named for. A rest-stop between tour-wings, Chris Hawk
at the piano will back up Gil Walters personal photo-take on historic Bridgeton.
The evening belongs to the West Side, with its sparkling historic architecture in
a neat loop around Commerce and Lake Streets. At First Presbyterians Bonham
Halla quiet Gothic Revival jewel amid the vivid high Victorians of the gentrythe
churchs original organ offers swelling backup as historian Jim Bergmann shares
his latest digs on the history of Broad Street Cemetery and Harriett Weber showcases a few of her most intricate and glowing creations in the time-honored quilters craft. Up-street, the splendid Francis Minch House (now Chance McCann law
offices) has Meghan Wrens best picks to entice you into a trip to Bivalve's
Bayshore maritime heritage center.
One $20 ticket buys this sure way to get your heart into the holidays, including
free Victorian caroling by the Off Broad Street Players and as many easy rides on a
horse-drawn trolley as you can fit into a single tour. Call Bridgeton Main Street:

Auditions for A Streetcar Named

Desire, the 2015 Cumberland Players
Main Stage Drama, will be held at the
Little Theatre in Vineland, on Tuesday
and Wednesday, December 16 and 17
at 7:30 p.m. Doors will open 30 minutes before auditions. Show performances are March 6, 7, 13, and 14 at 8
p.m. and March 8 at 2 p.m. also at the
Little Theatre. No understudies will be
used for this show, so actors must be
available for all performances.
Although casting and a read-through
will occur shortly after auditions,
rehearsals will not begin in earnest
until January.
Director Heidi Dugan is seeking
men and women from age 18 and up.
The director encourages anyone interested in this classic piece of American
drama to audition. Approximately six
men and six women are needed. All
ethnicities are welcome. There is some
flexibility in age ranges and small-role
doubling, depending on who comes
out for the show. The director is not
seeking duplicates of the 1951 film
actors. Auditions will consist of cold
readings from the script. Come prepared to complete an audition form
and conflict calendar for January
through March.
If you are unable to attend the auditions on the above dates, but would
still like to be considered for casting,
contact pr@cumberlandplayers.com to
make alternate audition arrangements.

I Vintage Vineland

{ BY VINCE FARINACCIO }

French
Connection
In 1887, a professor from France visited Vineland to
share his theory about the grape rot fungus.

he arrival of Pierre Viala in the

United States during the summer of 1887 marked a turning
point in the American and
European battle against the grape rot that
had plagued crops on both sides of the
Atlantic Ocean.
Vialas work with plant fungus had followed the discoveries of Vineland physician
Edwin Bidwell, whose studies uncovered in
1880 the full range of the fungus that caused
the rot in grapes. But according to the
Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society
pamphlet Early Physicians of Vineland,
Professor Pierre Viala of Montpellier,
France, who with one of his associates had
made a special and exhaustive study of the
black rot, doubted the discovery until on the
day of his arrival at Vineland on his scientific visit to this country it was shown to him
under the microscope.
The visit to Vineland was part of a tour
of areas where grape rot had become commonplace and where the U.S. Department
of Agriculture (USDA) had established stations for testing treatment of the disease.
USDA scientist Frank Lamson-Scribner,
whose own work on remedies was being
tested that summer, accompanied Viala to
Vineland, Maryland, Virginia, North
Carolina, New York, Ohio, Texas and
California. For Viala, the tour was a mission
to find a grape stock suited to France and
resistant to black rot. For Scribner, it was a
means of better understanding the difference between black rot and leaf spot in
grapes.

Lamson-Scribner, Viala had already suggested that the rot and leaf spots originated
from the same fungus. Scribner, at first,
resisted the notion. In his paper New
Observations on the Fungus of Black Rot of
Grapes he reports that our field investigations were supplemented by studies in the
laboratory - studies which have been continued this year by Prof. Viala in France,
and by myself at Washingtonthere has
been no lack of material in the hands of
either of us. I have had many specimens
sent me both from Vineland, New Jersey,
and Neosho, Missouri.

It was the lab work that convinced

Scribner Vialas theory was correct. When
his own lab studies further revealed that the
leaves were the first to be infected, weeks
before the grape, he concluded that the
fungus doubtless spreads from the leaves to
the berries; hence the early destruction of
the spotted leaves is advisable, and with
their removal the vines should at once be
disinfected by spraying them thoroughly
with a liquid mixture of sulphate of copper
and lime (Bordeaux mixture).
The discovery convinced Scribner that
the 1887 tests had been doomed from the
start because copper sulfur treatment was
applied after the rot had already appeared
on the leaves. At that point, the rot had
already begun in the fruit, even if it was not
yet detectable.
A more controlled test for the 1888
growing season was prepared, and instead
of working from a number of stations
throughout the country, only one site was
selected for the experiment. The location
chosen was Vineland and Alexander W.
Pearson, the Superintendent of the
Vineland Wine Company, was named
director of the project.
Scribner summarized the Vineland
results in his paper Successful Treatment
of Black Rot: The Bordeaux mixture has
given the best results this year, the contrast
in respect to rot where this preparation
was applied and where Eau Celeste and
other compounds were used being very
marked. Five applications have been made,
the liquids being applied with the Eureka
sprayer, May 29, June 4, June 21, July 2 and
July 11 By August 1 there were very few
bunches on the untreated vines which had
more than 2 or 3 sound berries on them, at
least 95 per cent, were destroyed; on the
vines treated with the Bordeaux mixture
there was some rot, particularly on the
most sheltered bunches, but the attack was
evidently a recent one, as none of the diseased berries had reached the blackened
and shriveled state; the loss might amount
to 10 or 15 per cent.
At an agricultural meeting that autumn,
he proudly announced that the time had
arrived when we may successfully combat
the black rot. I
