PART C

(12x5)
Module I

11. Determine the couple, T2 applied to link 2, necessary for

equilibrium. The force P is applied to link 4

Or
12. The dimensions of a four-link mechanism are, AB = 500 mm, BC =
660 mm, CD = 560 mm and AD = 1000mm. The link AB has an
angular velocity of 10.5 rad/s counter-clockwise and an angular
retardation of 26 rad/s2 at the instant when it makes an angle of 60 0
with AD, the fixed link. The mass of the links BC and CD is 4.2 kg/m
length. The link AB has a mass of 3.54 kg, the centre of which lies at
200 mm from A and a moment of inertia of 88500 kg-mm 2.
Neglecting gravity and friction effects, determine the instantaneous
value of the drive torque required to be applied on AB to overcome
the inertia forces.
Module II
13. A porter governor has equal arms each 250mm long and pivoted
on the axis of rotation. Each ball has a mass of 5kg and the mass of
the central load on the sleeve is 25kg.The radius of rotation of the
ball is 150mm when the governor begins to lift and 200mm when
the governor is at maximum speed. Find the minimum and
maximum speeds and range of speed of the governor.
Or
14. In a spring loaded governor of the Hartnell type, the lengths of the horizontal and the
vertical arms of the bell crank lever are 40mm and 80mm respectively. The mass of

each ball is 1.2kg.The extreme radii of rotation of the ball are 70mm and 105mm.The
distance of the fulcrum of each bell crank lever is 75mm from the axis of rotation of
the governor. The minimum equilibrium speed is 420rpm and the maximum
equilibrium speed is 4% higher than this. Neglecting the obliquity of the arms,
determine the
(i) Spring stiffness
(ii) Initial compression and
(iii) Equilibrium speed corresponding to radius of rotation of 95mm
Module III
15. The areas above and below the mean torque line for an I.C engine are -25,+200,100,+150,-300,+150 and -75 mm2 taken in order. The scale for the turning moment
diagram is 1 mm vertical scale = 10Nm and 1 mm horizontal scale = 1.5 0. The mass
of the rotating parts are 45 kg with a radius of gyration of 150 mm. if the engine
speed is 1500 r.p.m, find the co-efficient of fluctuation of speed.
Or
16. The turning moment diagram of an engine rotating at 200rpm is given by the relation
T(kN-m)= 15 + 8 sin2 2 cos 2 where is the crank angle. External resistance is
constant. A flywheel weighing 20kN is fitted on the engine shaft so that the total
fluctuation of speed does not exceed 1%.Determine the least value of moment of
inertia of the fly wheel and the radius of gyration
Module IV
17. A ship is propelled by a turbine rotor which has a mass of 3500kg and rotates at a
speed of 2000rpm.The rotor has a radius of gyration of 0.5m and rotates in clockwise
direction when viewed from the stern end. Find the magnitude of gyroscopic couple
and its direction for the following
(i) When the ship runs at a speed of 24km/hr and steers to the left in a curve of 70m
radius
(ii) When the ship pitches 6 above and 6 below the horizontal position and the bow
end is lowered. The pitching motion is simple harmonic with periodic time 30s

(iii) When the ship rolls and at a certain instant, it has an angular velocity of 0.05rad/s
clockwise when viewed from the stern
Also find the maximum angular acceleration during pitching
Or
18. A disc with radius of gyration of 60mm and a mass of 4kg is mounted centrally on a
horizontal axle of 80mm length between the bearings. It spins about the axle at 800
rpm counter clockwise when viewed from the right hand side bearing. The axle
processes about a vertical axis at 50 rpm in the counter clockwise direction when
viewed from above. Determine the resultant reaction at each bearing due to the mass
and the gyroscopic effect
Module V
19. The wheels of a bicycle are of diameter 800 mm. A rider on this
bicycle is travelling at a speed of 16 km/hr on a level road. The total
mass of rider and bicycle is 110 kg. A brake is applied to the rear
wheel. The pressure applied on the brake is 100 N and co-efficient
of friction is 0.06. Before the cycle comes to rest, find:
(i) distance travelled by the bicycle and
(ii) number of turns of its wheel.
Or
20. In a belt transmission dynamometer the distance between the
centre of driving pulley and the dead weights is one metre. Find the
value of dead weights required to keep the lever in horizontal
position if power transmitted is 7.5 kw and the diameter of each of
the driving as well as the intermediate pulleys is equal to 400 mm.
The driving pulley runs at 400 r.p.m.
