Colorado public defenders are an extraordinary

group of people doing extraordinary work on
behalf of those who need it most. I have had the
incredible opportunity to work directly under the
supervision of Dans friend Katherine Spengler and
past recipient Lucy Ohanian, incredible attorneys
that, to me, exemplify the dedication and heart of
public defenders. It always feels to me that the
Colorado public defenders are an extended family,
working to ensure that the next generation of
lawyers continues the tradition of excellent service
to the poor.

I came into law school knowing that I wanted to help

people and I plan on making that my lifes work as a
Public Defender. This scholarship has significantly
decreased the cost of the education required to do that.
The support of this award will allow me to focus on my
commitment to indigent defense and carry on Dans
legacy.

Spengler, who were classmates and
friends of Dan. Kimberly led a
successful fundraiser for Dan's
scholarship, and Kate has ensured that
awardees know about Dan and the
meaning he found through his public
defender work.

Dans friends Ian Kalmanowitz and Michael

Freimann. Ian met Dan at Colorado Law and was
a good friend of Dans when he worked in
Colorado Springs. Michaels friendship with Dan
began during childhood, and continued through
his time in Colorado.

Many scholarship awardees and friends met

for dinner with Dave and Shari, along with
Dean Phil Weiser and Professor Ann
England. It was a great evening of sharing
stories about Dan and networking within our
scholarship community.

Since its establishment in 2005, the Dan Barash Scholarship has raised approximately $950,000, and has awarded
nearly $200,000 in scholarship support to 19 Colorado Law students. Through your generosity, we are continuing
to build Dans endowed scholarship fund so that we are able to award more scholarships of higher amounts to
worthy students who carry on his enduring legacy as a public defender.

The endowment awards have grown steadily over the last nine years, from a single award of $1,000 in 2005 to
providing two scholarships of $20,000 each this year. We are deeply appreciative of the continued support from our
friends and family.
