History:

The place where Pandacan is located was a thriving community even before the
Spaniards arrived in the year 1571. The land was rich with plants called sacate. Hence,
farming was the main source of living. Pandacan was surrounded by streams
connecting to Pasig River, establishing a successful commerce between neighboring
communities.
THE DARK AGES The Spanish regime in the 17th century was considered to be the
dark ages of Pandacan. It was the time when residents were forced to do labor for
inadequate compensation. The abuse prompted tribe leaders to revolt against the
Spaniards; thus, Pandacan was known as cradle of agitators.
PANDACAN, A TOWN OF ITS OWN In 18th century, several boys found an image of
Sto. Nio in the middle of the Pandan field where they played. It was given to Sampaloc
because Pandacan was originally under their parish. However, the Baby Jesus
miraculously kept coming back and it was then decided to build a church for Sto. Nio.
This period, according to historian Prof. Santiago (see Source section at the bottom),
was important, because it was during this time when Pandacan officially became a town
(May 30, 1712).

"Huwag sobrang malulong sa pamumulitika sa ating pamunuan. Maging tapat sa
tungkulin. Upang ito ang maging simula ng pagkaunlad ng ating bansa sa Asya."

"Ang pagsagawa ng seminar tungkol sa "Peace and Order" dahil dito sa amin laganap
ang pagnanakaw dahil sa kakulangan ng pera at pagkain. Ginawa namin ito upang
maturuan at matauhan ang mga tao dito sa amin sa tamang mga batas at kung anu-ano
ang mga tamang ginagawa sa pagharap ng problema."

I have interviewed our barangay chairman here in Balagtas, Pandacan, Manila.

Antonio D. Lalik. I had a hard time in this assignment, because first of all I am from
Davao City where I can't really find a contact on my city's mayor. But through all this I
managed to do this. I thought being a Barangay Chairman was all easy breezy but until
I found out what really are their duties in the field. They struggle to address the people's
concern, because of all the problems the community is facing. Petty theft going about,
some juvenile delinquents making noise and disturbing people in their homes and so
much more.
I know they have the solemn duty to help maintain and develop our community
but we can help them too. We can help them by obeying the simple rules and
regulations of our community. Segregating our trash by throwing them in their proper
containers and etc. Through these little things we can help bring out the best
development in our community. And through this development we can build our
stepping stone to a brighter future. A better country, A better nation and A better
