FOUNDATION IN
MUSIC
UCSI Universitys Foundation in Music is specically tailored
and designed to prepare post-SPM students for UCSI
Universitys degrees in Classical and Contemporary Music. The
three semesters foundation programme includes music core
courses as well as general electives for students to choose
from. Successful completion of the foundation programme will
satisfy all entry requirements and allow for direct entry to the
music degree programme outlined here.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Foundation in Music
SPM/O-Levels
UEC
Other Year 11 Equivalent

Music Requirements
Candidates must pass the Institute of Music audition and
placement tests, as follows:
1. Performance Audition (any major instrument or voice)
Classical stream: Three Classical pieces of contrasting styles
Contemporary stream: Three pieces of contrasting styles
(including contemporary style)
Note: String/Woodwind/Voice majors are required to bring along their own
piano accompanist or request for a faculty accompanist (accompaniment
fee will be charged).
CD accompaniment is allowed for contemporary majors.

Contemporary stream, major drums: Demonstration of


knowledge of common drum beats including 8-beat rock,
16-beat rock, and hip-hop at various tempi
2. Practical Skills Test
Sight-reading, open-score reading, playing from simple
gured bass, repeating a melody, a rhythmic phrase and
chord progressions from memory and singing intervals
3. Theory Test
Intervals, scales and key signatures, triads, roman numeral
analysis, time signatures, beaming into beats, rests, scale
degrees and Italian/German terms
English Requirements

A distinction (A+, A or A-) in English Language subject at SPM/UEC level; or


MUET Band 5; or a score of 213 (computer-based) / 550 (written-based) /
80 (internet-based) in TOEFL; or Band 5.5 in IELTS.
In the event that English Language Requirements are not met, student
may be required to undertake additional English courses(s) prior or
concurrently with undergraduate programme, based on the Universitys
decision.

CONTEMPORARY MUSIC
(HONS)
The Bachelor of Contemporary Music (Hons) caters to the
needs of those students who want a career in the popular
music industry. By covering the key areas of Arranging,
Technology, Performance, Recording and Music Business (but
not neglecting other related studies such as contemporary
music theory, ear training and composition), the programme
will enable its graduates to pursue challenging and rewarding
careers within the industry.

Music Requirements
Candidate must pass the Institute of Music audition and

Major, melodic minor and harmonic minor scales in all keys


Note: Drum majorsa demonstration of knowledge of common drum beats
including swing, jazz waltz, samba and funk at various tempi.

Realisation of chord symbols for triads (M, m, dim, Aug) and


seventh chords (Maj7, min7, min7(b5), dim7, Dom7)
Note: Drum majorsreading a short excerpt written in
standard drum notation.
2. Listening Test
Identication of a range of musical elements such as tempi,
textures, dynamics, timbres, and rhythms by listening and
responding to brief, recorded musical extracts of both
Classical and Contemporary styles
3. Practical Skills Test
Sight-reading, open-score reading, playing from simple
gured bass, repeating a melody, a rhythmic phrase and
chord progressions from memory and singing intervals
4. Theory Test
Intervals, scales and key signatures, triads and inversions,
roman numeral analysis, time signatures, beaming into
beats, rests, scale degrees, diminished and seventh chords,
open score, cadences, lead sheet symbols and Italian/
German/ French terms
English Requirements

A distinction (A+, A or A-) in English Language subject at SPM/UEC level; or

The Bachelor of Classical Music (Hons) programme is intended


for those who wish to pursue classical music studies to an
advanced level and has the advantage of a very broad based
curriculum without compromising the possibility of increasing
the specialisation in one or more areas. Performance and
performance-related studies are especially prominent but
other areas such as history, analysis and stylistic composition
are also included.
This blend of practical work and academic enquiry will produce
graduates equipped with a raft of skills and knowledge that will
be of value to many employers and enable them to pursue
careers not only as performers and teachers, but also as
administrators and managers within the wider music industry
and beyond.
