After completing this assignment you should be able to:
Calculate currents and voltages in a DC circuit
Identify series and parallel connections, and use equivalent
Perform power calculations for a DC circuit
Use Kirchhoffs Laws and Superposition Principle for DC circuit analysis
For this assignment, and lab class, we are dividing you into 4 groups based on your registration
number. Read the description carefully, and choose your group, you will loose your assignment marks
otherwise.

Q1

Describe, using your own words, the terms electric potential, electric current, and electric
resistance.

Q2

You are to construct the circuit in Figure Q2 consisting of three resistors (R1 .. R3) and three
DC power sources (E1 .. E3) as shown below.

Initially points K and M are connected together, and L remains hanging.

a) Using Ohms Law and/or Kirhhoffs Laws;
(i)
(ii)
(iii)
(iv)
(v)

Calculate the currents through all elements of the circuit.

Calculate the potential difference across the resistors.
Calculate the power dissipated from the individual resistors.
Calculate electrical power supplied to the circuit from each source.
What is the connection between values calculated for (iii) and (iv)? Explain.

Now point L is connected with K and M. For this modified circuit;

b) Using Ohms Law and/or Kirhhoffs Laws;
(vi)
(vii)
(viii)
(ix)
(x)

Calculate the currents through all elements of the circuit.

Calculate the potential difference across the resistors.
Calculate the power dissipated from the individual resistors.
Calculate electrical power supplied to the circuit from each source.
What is the connection between values calculated for (viii) and (ix)? Explain.

c) Now use Superposition Principle to calculate all the circuit currents when KLM are connected
together. Compare your answers with values from (vi).
d) While KLM points remain connected, the connection between points XY is removed.
Calculate the potential difference between points XY in this situation.

Q3 a) Two inductors L1 and L2 are connected in series with mutual inductance M between them.
Sketch the circuit and write down, from first principles, the differential equations relating the
voltage across each of the inductances to the current. State any assumptions made in your
derivations. By suitable integration, determine the total energy stored in the circuit and
determine an expression for the equivalent inductance of the combination.

b) Two coils connected in series-aiding fashion have a total inductance of 250 mH. When
connected in a series-opposing configuration, the coils have a total inductance of 150 mH. If
the inductance of one coil (L1) is three times the other, find L1, L2, and M. What is the
coupling coefficient?
