Strategic Planning of Health Care Organization

Strategic Planning of Health Care Organization

Introduction
Leader of the local health care organization, the Ken Janowski noticed that the other
health care organizations have been successfully incorporating the strategic management
practices. He hired me for researching what the strategic planning development is & also
what the implementation process is & for addressing why this has been successful. The
strategic planning has been practiced a lot by any health care organizations. The strategic

planning process should have been established for positioning health care organizations in the
fast changing environment. The strategic planning has been a process to determine what the
organization requires to be in future & how they would get there (McKay, 2001). The
strategic planning needs that the choices have been made of the health care organization
future. Those choices concern our vision & also mission, the goals to be pursued, also what
services would be offered & to whom, resources which would be required & how they would
be acquired.

Importance of the Strategic Planning

Improving the performance of the health care organizations.
Determining the future direction of the health care organization
Providing health care services of high quality.
Optimizing the resource allocation
Meeting the accreditation & the regulatory needs
Meeting vision & the mission statement about the health care organization
Maximizing their chances for the success

Components of the Strategic Planning

Every health care organization must design the process that should be realistic &
which works for a health care organization. The components may have been combined &
completed at similar time.

Performing the Environmental Assessment

One component in the strategic planning has been the thorough, goal environmental
assessments. It includes the realistic assessment of history & the present situation of the
health care organization, their strengths, their weaknesses, the opportunities & threats. Result

of analysis has been the list of essential issues for future. Health care organization function in
the 2 environments i.e. the external & the internal.

Internal Assessment
Reviewing the history of our health care organization includes their beginning, the
original mission & the services, any other significant events, key changes, the successes or
the failures & the values or the traditions. Reviewing present environment of the health care
organization includes the services, the products, the programs, the staffing, the financial
position & the present plans. Historical & the proposed utilization statistic, the origin data of
the patients & the financial reports and also the profiles of the medical staff & opinion polls
of the patients have been instructive & must be gathered.

External Assessment
All the health care organization functions in the large setting & is affected by
surrounding forces. External assessment majorly focuses on the demographic data, the
political trends, the social change, economic climate, the community perceptions & the
competitive providers.

Developing the Vision

Strategic planning has been about been ready for future. This is about creating the
future of our health care organization. Vision statement describes techniques which we need
health care organization to be in future. Contents about vision of the health care organization
include:
Clarification of the values of the organization
Explore what ideas & trends might change way a health care organization is doing the
business
To identify what requirements are emerging as the result of the demographic, the
technological, the economical, the political & the regulatory trends

Reviewing Mission Statement

Mission statement gives purpose or the reasons for existence of the health care
organization. Mission statement must be specific, the succinct articulation about what Board
wishes health care organization must be. However mission statement often tells what the
health care organization is, this sets forth some of the limits or the restrictions on the
activities of the health care organization (Governing Board Orientation Manual Washington
Trustees and Governing Boards, Not Defined). Mission statement therefore establishes a
guiding principle by which process of the strategic planning flows.

Preparing Strategic Plan

Plan must serve as the guide for all the activities & directing the health care
organization to the preferred future. Simple, brief plan with the short & the long term goals
encourages health care organization for moving ahead & specifically identifies path to do
that. Draft plan should include:
Vision statement
Mission statement
Organizational structure has been planned for the future
History of health care organization
Major relationships & how they would be maintained, improved and developed
Future issues which the health care organization is facing
Implementation strategies
The Target population
Analysis of the strengths & weaknesses
Goals & objectives
Marketing plans

Approving a Plan
Committee of the Strategic Planning reviews the draft of a plan. Draft plan must be
reviewed by the others, like the staff members, the interested community leaders & the
people which are having the stake in the future of the health care organization, afterwards
making the required revisions. This has been important for developing the plan which may be
understood & carried out. Committee submits plan for the approval of the Board.

Implementing the Plan

Board authorizes, CEO for initiating implementation process by the modification of
the policy, staff hiring and buying the equipment, appointing the important task forces and
allocating & budgeting the funds. Board, community & medical & health care organization
staff must be aware about & understand the plan. Plan must be discussed to all.

Monitoring and Updating the Strategic Plan

Strategic plans must be monitored regularly & should be updated annually. Provided
faster changeable health care culture, the reviews after every three months of the processes
can be required. Updating the strategic plan must happen by the budget development.
Updating require reviewing the performance, planning goal, changes in the opportunities, the
threats, the strengths & weaknesses & important issues about health care organization .
Revisions in plan have then been made & included in budget.

Conclusion
Positioning health care organization for future is the purpose of the strategic planning.
Strategic planning process gives health care organizations and also health system with ability
for determining their future & achieving that. Strategic plan requires to be adjusted if the
conditions change whenever the fresh information is present or when there has been a change
in the delivery system of the health care.
