Reading Response to Framework for Success
Well be using this document as a guide to the kind of writing you need to practice
and the habits of mind it outlines as necessary for a successful college experience, so
know that well revisit it in various ways throughout the semester.
1. Where did you do this reading? (in your room? the library? etc.) What time of the day?
What about the time and place helped or hindered your reading experience?
a. I read this reading in my room on the couch at 3 pm on Friday afternoon. This
was a very quiet environment that allowed me to focus very well. I was able to
make it through the reading in about 25 minutes. I had to reread a couple of the
parts to ensure that I grasped the entire concept.
2. How did you engage with the text? For example, did you underline, highlight, annotate,
take notes, look up words, research anything you read about, just read? What worked
well and what didnt? It may be helpful here to indicate what format your text was in
paper copy or electronic and think about how the mode of a text influences how you read.
a. I again read the text on my laptop, which hindered my ability to physically
highlight and annotate the piece. I found the part on composing in different
environments rather interesting. I would be curious to discover if there is a
different in ones writing based on where the writing is taken place (outside
compared to indoors in a study).
3. Pick three of the habits of mind listed below. Write about how you feel you practice them
in your life already.
Most writers have a particular area at which they are stronger. For the assignment, I
think each person should pick a habit of the mind that they excel the most in. Then,
everyone develops a presentation showing how he or she is able to excel so well in
that area. We will then each choose a second habit, this one being the area at which
each student is weakest. Students will take notes on the techniques their classmates
use and then develop ways which each could strengthen their weakest habit. With
the weakest habit, students will use a combination of the suggested ideas from the
class and write about how these suggestions can aid in developing a stronger habits
of the mind.
