The Language teaching methods are very important for the purpose of learning and

teaching in every language. English is the most language that used widely in the world and it is
become the important spoken language in the world. So, the teacher must be good to choose the
appropriate language teaching method for their student, especially for foreign learners. Because
we know that teaching and learning English must be interesting and communicative, we can use
Communicative Language Teaching as a method here.
Communicative Language Teaching (CLT)
CLT method is a popular method to language teaching which emphasizes using language
in the same way as it is used in real life. It will help the teacher to make their learner become
communicative in the classroom. In other word, you put your students in language situations
which are as close to real life as possible. According to Richards and Rodgers (2001), CLT starts
with a theory of language as communication, and its goal is to develop learners communicative
competence. It means that the CLT method is very useful for the teacher to use in the classroom
because of its communicative goal. As the name of this method, to be communicative in the
classroom can be interpreted as interactive activities among the students or between the student
and the teacher to reach the goal. So, this method is widely use in foreign language and
appropriate for the teacher to teach English as foreign language.
CLT wants to involve students in real of realistic communication through different
activities. The question answer session in the teaching activity need to be communicative, so the
students can improve their ability not only in speaking English but also their confidence to be
interactive with the class activities that given by teacher. The accuracy of target language is less
important than successful achievement of the communicative task (Harmer, 2001) in
Approaches and Methods Language Teaching. The statement means that the goal of the class
activities using CLT method is more to the communicative and interactive class. The target
language is less important than other. So, the teacher can improve students confidence by using
this method in the classroom to build an interactive and communicative class.
Voice-Card
Voice-Card is one of the teaching media that very useful for the teacher to improve their
students ability in speaking English. The students will be forced to be active in the class so the

class will be not bored for them. Voice-Card is flexible for the teacher activities and the teacher
can change the function of this card depend on the teaching need. But here, the goal of using
voice-card is to force the students confidence in speaking especially to answer the teachers
question.
The way to use Voice-Card is the teacher must give 2-3 cards to each student in the
classroom (It can be more, depend on the teacher). It will be better if the cards are colorful, so it
will look interesting for the students. The students just allowed to speak and answer the question
from the teacher or deliver their idea in the classroom depend on how many cards they get. If the
students get 2 cards, it means that they only have two chances to answer the question and deliver
their idea. When the teacher give a question and a student can answer the question, so the student
must submit one of their card to the teacher and the teacher will give them score depend on the
students answer accuracy. The students who have used their card to answer the question, they
are not allowed to answer the next question even though they know what the answer is. They are
being able to give the chances for their friends to answer the question. The question may give in
all of teaching activities, whether in the pre-activity, main activity or post-activity. Here, the
teacher must be creative to make a question so there should be different question in every
teaching activity and the number of question at least similar with the number of cards that given
to the students. It seems like a quiz in the class, but the different is the student can use this card
to ask about the material that they have not understood.
The hope after using this Voice-Card is make the students become more confidence in the
classroom to speak English and interactive with the whole activities. Because sometime, the
students who speak and expressing their idea briefly in the class only a few of them and always
same students. Whereas, the other students have a same chances to express their idea. Then,
using this kind of card will make the students feel interest with the material and they will be
motivated to learn English. As stated by Burden (2004), students need to realize that the purpose
of using the target language is not for studying purposes only but also for effective
communication. Using this card as a media in teaching will improve the students will to interact
with the teacher and become communicative.
Using Voice-Card in the CLT Method

As we know that CLT method is the structure of activity that are communicatively and
make the students become interactive in the class, the teacher must give something new to the
student to force their confidence to speak English communicatively. It will involve the students
to interact with the teacher in question answer session in teaching activity.
There some role of the teachers in CLT which are determined by the view of CLT
method. Breen and Candlin divided two main rules of a teacher in CLT classrooms. The first role
is to facilitate the communication process among all the students in the classroom, and between
the students and the different type of activities. Second role, a teacher has to act as an
independent participant within the learning teaching groups. The meaning of this statement is the
teacher have important role in the class not only as a facilitator in the classroom while the
students interact with their friends to do the project, but also as a independent participant that
would be not take sides to a current groups, if there any groups, or student in the classroom.
Different with Richards and Rodgers (2001), they stated that the teacher is expected to act as a
resource, an organizer of resources, a motivator, a counselor, a guide and a researcher. It means
that the teacher can be as a resource for the student and also as motivator or other role. When the
teacher give some questions to the student and let them answer it using Voice-Card, it will help
the students to force their confidence and motivate them to answer it. If the answer of the
students is false, the teacher as a resource and guide can help them to correct it. Sometime, the
students have not understood about the material, so they ask to the teacher. It can be the activity
where the student is enough confidence to deliver their idea in the classroom using Voice-Card.
There also role of the students in CLT which give the evidence that they are enjoy the
class so much. The role of them is negotiating. They negotiate among themselves, the learning
process and the objective learning. Learners should contribute as much as they gain, and learn in
an independent way. They interact within the groups and within the classroom. When they have
Voice-Card, they will have similar chances with other to sound their answer in the class. They
will lead to be responsible with their chances to answer, be respecting to their friends by give
other similar chances to answer, and use their card as well as possible. There will be no answer
without basis, only responsibility answer.
