Create New Model.

Modify/Show Grid system Quick Start New Rectangular Guide

Define Section Properties Frame Sections

Import New Properties

Concrete Rectangular Steel I-Beam select W16x26 to W18x175

Result: w16x26 to w18x175 will appear as following OK

Properties Frame Section Add New Frame Property Auto Selection List

RENAME Property Name to AUTOLATBM Select W16x26 to W18x175 add to Auto Select List OK

Go to Define Section Properties Frame Sections Import New Properties Auto Select List

Select 2 item: A-CompBm and A-LatCol. OK OK

At the bottom Right Corner, Choose Similar Stories.

Go to Edit Edit Story and Grid System Data Modify/Show Story Data

NOTE: by default, the Story4 is labelled as Master Story. Story1,2,3 is similar to Story4.

Create Column by Choosing Quick Draw Columns Button. Properties of object box will pop
up. Make sure the property is set to A-LatCol. Set angle to 90 degree (notice the column
change in position).

Click at D1 to insert column.

Go to cursor mode Ctrl + Click on column A2 Select Column C7 RESULT: notice that the bottom
left shows 4 frames selected.

Repeat this process for B2, A3, C3 and C4. RESULT: 20 frames selected.

Assign Frame Local Axes

Choose Frame object Major Direction is Y. Apply. RESULT: Notice the 5 columns (20frames) selected
rotated 90degrees. Reason: We have defined the orientation of the selected to major direction that is Y
direction.

Assign clear display of assign

Go to Set Display Options Add a Tick at Extrude Frames Tick at Apply to All Windows Apply
OK

CREATE BEAM
Quick Draw Beams Property = AUTOLATBM.

Add Beam as followings:


NOTE: the beam are level due to the similar properties as we have set it that way.

Use cursor mode, Select Beam C/2-3 Edit Delete.

CREATE SECONDARY BEAM

Select Select Intersecting Line

The selected Beam as follows Edit Delete.

DRAW FLOORING OBJECTS


Remove the Extrude Frame View Options.

Rename property to Deck1

Make sure Snap to Grid Intersections & Points is active

Draw the slab needed. Click enter to finish it.

This indicate the direction of the deck span.

Use cursor mode define Section Properties Deck Sections.

Modify/Show Property Modify the slab depth to 3in.

Draw Auto Draw Cladding

Set Elevation View Plan A.

You can right click to show below:

Select plan view.

Define Load Patterns

MODFIY LOAD: Select Live Load, change type to Reducible Live Modfiy Load

ADD LOAD:
1. Rename load name to SDead (super imposed dead load), Choose Type: Super Dead Add New
load.

2. Rename load name to Cladding , Choose Type: Super Dead Add New load.

3. Rename load name to Eqy , Choose Type: Seismic, Auto Lateral Load: ASCE: 7-10 Add New
Load --> Modify Lateral Load

Uncheck the following OK

4. Rename load name to Windx , Choose Type: Wind, Auto Lateral Load: ASCE: 7-10 Add New
Load --> Modify Lateral Load Include Shell Objects, Wind speed = 100mph OK OK

ADD SHELL LOAD


Firstly, select top deck (not beam!), then add.

Off snap to grid button.

Select (with cursor) all the preliminary beam (boundary). Note that 1 beam = 4frames due to similar
stories design.

3D-mode:

Go back to Plan View

CREATE WIND LOAD Create Wind Load @ Right Elevation


First, create the elevation view of the right side of the building so that the wind load can be apply
to it.

New Developed Elevation Name: RIGHT (to apply wind load @ right elevation) OK

Turn On Snap to Grid intersections and Points.


Select the following RIGHT elevation, Click on column D1, D2, B2, B3, C3, C4 Enter

RESULT:

Back to Plan View.


MAKE SURE: The wind load direction is on positive x-direction on the right elevation, negative xdirection on the left elevation.
Click on 3D view, set view options Object Assignments CHECK local Axes.

RESULT:

Positive side on right Elevation as above and Negative side on left elevation as below.

Uncheck the local axes and back to basic 3D view

Select Elevation View A OK (note: A view here is the same as left elevation)

SELECT the whole A panel. (notice the doted line)

Wind Load Pattern Name: Windx Coefficient, Cp : -0.8 (so that the wind load is at the positive xdirection acting on the A panel). CHECK Windward (varies).

Choose RIGHT Elevation View:

Select the following 3 panels

Coefficient, Cp :0.5 Leeward or Sides (Constant) OK

Assign Clear Display of Sign 3D view.


Check Load applied:

RUN ANALYSIS

Right Click on the beam to bring out individual diagram.

NOTE: Display location Show Max OR Scroll for Values.


E.g Scroll for Values 6.5ft from the joint.

Reset the display to Underformed shape -> 3D view

Right Click on the Secondary Beam:

Design Composite Beam Design View/Revise references::

Check for information of other tabs too:: Beam, Deflection, Vibration, Prices, Factors

FOR 3D view, go to display option, UNCHECK the object fill and all null shells.

Verify Analysis and Design Section

Select NO this time? Why?


Right click on 1 of the secondary beam, you will notice that last analysis and current design/next
analysis are not the same.

The accepted Sections List shows all the members that are adequate for the design.

Click the DETAILS button, and it pop out a window that shows all the information about the beam:
this report may be printed or export as word document.

To Rerun the Analysis:


1. Analyze run Analysis
2. Design Composite Beam Design Start Design/check
3. Design Composite Beam Design Verify Analysis vs Design Section

RESULT:
4. Final Check: Design Composite Beam Design Verify all members passed

RESULT:

Click the SELECT ALL button:

Design Composite Beam Design Make Auto Select Section Null

Click ok the remove auto select section and replace with the current design section.
Click CLEAR SELECTION button to clear the selection.

Select Select Properties Frame Sections

Select AUTOLATBM Select Close

Design Steel Frame Design Lateral Bracing

Select User Specified Specify Point Bracing

On the Plan View tab Right Click on the Beam as follow:

Note the design procedure is Steel Frame Design.

Go to 3D-view tab, Design Steel Frame Design Start Design/Check

Click NO::

Design Steel Frame Design Display Design Info

Make sure the P-M Ratio is selected (both 3D view and Plan View Tab)

Right Click on the Beam:

Again: note that the analysis section and design section are different.
here shows the auto generated code suitable steel sections that are adequate for design.

Again, if the analaysis and design still do not match, Click YES to rerun:
