Presidents Message
- Ar. Chris Yap Seng Chye Dear
MIID
Members,
greetings
from
MIID.
I am proud
to present you with the inaugural
edition of our E-newsletter. I hope
this newsletter will keep you informed
on past events, ongoing and future
initiatives, and upcoming events of
MIID.
In my manifesto as the incoming
President of MIID in July 2014, I had
stressed on the need to focus on a
few issues, chief among them are
Membership affairs, which include
professional practice matters and
interior design education.
I am pleased to inform members that
MIID had commenced discussions
with the Board of Architects Malaysia
or LAM on areas whereby MIIDs
involvement can be enhanced.
Foremost matter on this agenda
would be the criteria for registration
as an Interior Designer and the

note, MIID would like to convey its
appreciation to LAM for working
together towards streamlining the
Interior Design Practice in Malaysia.
On the MIID-Nippon Paint Reka
Awards 2014, we celebrate our
Members achievements for Interior
Design Excellence once again and
we are very pleased to have Nippon
Paint (M) Sdn Bhds involvement
with us as a Corporate Sponsor. The
standards of the submissions this
year were astounding and show the
spectrum of abilities of MIID members.
I wish to thank all participants
professionals and students for their
participation and to the judges, Ar.
Chan Seong Aun (PAM President)
and Prof Tajuddin (Artist/Academic
Advisor) for their invaluable time

taken to go through the submissions

in detail to arrive at the deserving
Winners.
As a joint effort towards a sustainable
future for Earth, MIID had also
collaborated with the Malaysian
Green
Building
Confederation
(MGBC) in the formation of a
technical committee to jointly
develop a Green Interiors Rating

encourage MIID Members to take
part in the GBI Facilitators Course

On the creative profession scene,
MIID had been involved as a
partner institution under the Majlis
Rekabentuk

(MRM)
umbrella in their effort to jointly
promote the awareness and value of
the creative professions in Malaysia.
MIID had participated in their MADE
Festival by exhibiting Reka Awards
together with Pertubuhan Akitek
Malaysia, Institute of Landscape
Architects Malaysia, wREGA Malaysia
and Persatuan Pereka Perindustrian
Malaysia. It is MIIDs hope that the
combined creative industry move
forward as one to create a greater
sense of appreciation in society and
subsequently gain more respect
for the creative discipline and the
professionals involved.
In the promotion of Interior Design
education, MIID will be conducting
talk programmes for schools of

Professional Practice
Issue October/ November - 1/2014

MIID Council Members paid a visit to Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia to have a discussion on the professional practice of Interior Design.

Practice Committee Report

Over the last 3 months, the MIID Professional Practice Committee has had to address a few issues pertaining to misrepresentation
of the profession and queries on Professional Scale of Fees.
On the matter of misrepresentation, there were 2 clear cases of individuals who were not MIID Corporate Members and also not
registered with Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM) as Interior Designers. However, they used the title of Interior Designer in their
advertorials that were published in local dailies. Both cases were referred to LAM by MIID and action had been taken by LAM to
inform these individuals of their wrongful act.
There were also a lot of queries from Members on the Professional Scale of Fees. MIID had submitted the Professional Scope
of Works and Scale of Fees to LAM on 2013 for their further action and had been informed that it is being reviewed by the AG
Chamber. In the meantime, MIID Registered Interior Designers were advised to adopt the percentage of fees practised by
Architects, i.e. 10% of total cost of works for Interior Design projects.
In line with the Presidents agenda to focus on Interior Design Practice Matters during Council Term 2014 2016, the Professional
Practice Committee will be addressing more issues related to professional practice that are being brought up by our Members.
All Members are encouraged to join in the support work to assist the Practice Committee, to broaden and share the Members
