Laboratory #6: Control Charts for Attribute Data

(Fraction of Non-Conforming Chart)

Purpose: Provide the student with the opportunity to practice concepts for Control

Charts using attribute data with a hands-on exercise.

Materials:
Sampling Boxes

50-hole pallet

Minitab Software

Background:
Not all variables can be measured with variable data (dimension, volume, weight).
Some variables can be inspected for conforming to several specification and
determination of pass or fail can be made. The fraction of nonconforming is defined as

the rate of out of specification units (defective) over the sample size being analyzed.
Several quality characteristics can be analyzed simultaneously and if one or more than
those characteristics is out of specification the unit is classified as nonconforming.
The statistical principles underlying the control chart for faction of nonconforming are
based on the binomial distribution. Each point in the control chart represents an
independent Bernoulli experiment with a constant probability of success of p. Where,

The formulas to compute the control limits are as follows:

Instructions
1. Create a table with the following headings:
Sample
Number

Number of
Nonconforming
Units

Fraction of
Nonconforming
Units

Operator

Sampling
Box

2. The sampling boxes will be numbered from 1 to 6; select one sampling box to
collect the first 30 samples.

3. Submerge the 50-hole pallet in the sampling box filling all spaces with the balls
contained in the sampling box.
4. Assume color balls are nonconforming units; count then and fill the column of
Number of Nonconforming Units in step 1 above for 30 samples.
Note: Segregate the number of balls by color.
5. Using step 1 and step 2 of the Minitab Instruction section below construct a
fraction of nonconforming control chart for the 30 samples collected in step 4
above.
6. Using Minitab Construct a Pareto chart by color using data collected in step 4
above.
7. Using a different sampling box repeat steps 3 and 4 above.
8. Using step 5 of the Minitab Instruction section below include samples in step 7
to the fraction of nonconforming control chart as a phase II analysis.
9. Report should include the following:
a. Abstract/Summary
b. Introduction
c. Experimental Procedure
d. Results: Data, figures, graphs, tables, etc.
e. Discussion
i. Include your answers to the following questions
1. Using the data collected calculate the control limits
manually
2. Is the process in statistical control in step 5? Explain your
answer.
3. Using step 3 and step 4 of the Minitab Instruction section
below eliminate any out of control point and recalculate
control limits. . Justify any decision.
4. Discuss any recommendation that could be provided
based on the Pareto Chart.
5. Comment of the fraction of nonconforming.
6. Provide your analysis for the phase II of the
nonconforming fraction control chart.
f. Conclusions
Be aware of spelling, grammar and sentence structure; appearance and formatting.
