ANNUAL REPORT

ORPHAN SUPPORT PROGRAM

2013

FUNDED BY:

DM AID, Denmark
IMPLEMENTING PARTNER:

Karwan Development Foundation,

Pakistan

ABOUT THE REPORT:

Orphan support program is one of the important features of KDF and the organization is
working on extending support to orphans for past well over six years in the country. The
report in hand is just a roving view of how the organization had spent 2013 working on
the program.

ORPHANS & SOCIETY:

In developing countries like ours orphans besides missing the cozy and affectionate
parental love and care also have to fight for their survival with no access to even very
basic facilities like two square meals a day, health cover and basic education.
In civilized societies the orphans are taken care of properly and in most of the cases
governments would become the custodian of such parentless kids. Our religion, Islam,
lays special emphasis on helping and caring such children but in country like ours one
cant even think of proper care of orphans at government level where even the common
citizens are not having access to basic amenities and well over 40 per cent people are
living below the poverty line.
To fill this gap a number of civil society organizations have taken upon this responsibility
to extend support to orphans in different ways and to fill the gap created by the
governments inability or indifference toward this very important issue.
Karwan Development Foundation has picked up this noble cause with the aim to nurture
and groom these hapless and have-nots of society into a productive and civilized
members of society and save them from derailment, as in most of the cases it is noted
that the orphans who failed to get proper patronage, either of some civil society or some
affectionate family member, indulge in negative activities and become nuisance for
society. So by extending support to orphans the foundation on one hand is fulfilling its
moral and religious obligation and on the other contributing toward the collective good of
the society.

PROGRAM DESIGN
KDF has designed a unique program wherein they have not developed any formal
orphanage and the foundation extends financial support to the orphans with preference
to let them with some of their relatives with whom they feel comfortable to live with.

The main focus of the program is to extend financial assistance for their education and
other basic needs. It is mandatory for the children, enrolled under this program, to
attend the school. As in most of the cases the relatives taking care of these orphans are
themselves financially very weak and the financial assistance given to these orphans
become a blessing in disguise for the whole family in meeting both ends.
According to our program the boy orphan will be extended help up to the age of 18
years and the stipend depend on his educational performance while the girl students
are extended financial assistance till the completion of their basic education and on their
marriage these girls are provided with lump-sum financial support to help them start
their practical life.
The whole exercise of adopting orphans is subject to a great scrutiny and checking of
the most deserving ones and finally after passing them through a vigilant drill the most
deserving orphans are picked and then on yearly basis their educational performance is
judged and the representatives of the foundation held regular meetings with these
orphans, their guardians and the staff of school where they are getting education.

DM AIDs ROLE:
Danish Muslim Aid is extending financial assistance for the program It is a registered
Muslim charity in Denmark which is now supporting and patronizing hundreds of welfare
projects across the world with currently running these projects in some 20 different
countries including Syria, India, Afghanistan, Uganda, Palestine and Pakistan.
DM Aid also monitored the program by visiting Pakistan at least once a year. DM AID
also takes strategic decisions about the program in consultation with its implanting
partner.

KDF CONTRIBUTION:
Its been six years down the road that this program is functioning and the foundation is
bringing improvements in it by every passing day. Under the program KDF has to
identify and enroll orphans after proper survey and verification process to pick the most
deserving of the lot. KDF is currently extending support to orphans from Muzaffarabad,
Rawalpindi and Nowshehra.

MONTHLY FINANCIAL SUPPORT:

As already mentioned above the OSP designed
by KDF has no proper orphanage and the kids
are kept with their relatives to avoid development
of psychological problems which the kids may
develop in orphanage. In most of the cases the
relatives on whom the responsibility of an orphan
child rests with are financially weak and could
not afford the kid proper education and other
basic facilities.
The orphans used to get financial support on
monthly basis. Currently, the foundation provides

orphans. The foundation also make sure that the
amount given by the foundation be spent on the education and if required, health needs
of the kid. The amount provided to the orphan is fare enough to also provide some
cushion to the financial requirements of the guardians family as well.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT:
KDF is managing the OSP with great care and
diligently evaluating the performance of the kids
under the patronage of this programme. In the
course of orphans assessment some of them
are found poorer than the rest and in these
cases besides provision of the regular stipend
these kids are provided with books, school
bags and uniforms every year.
KDF monitor and evaluate the performance of
orphans enrolled under the program quite
diligently. In case of some health cover required
to any of these kids they would be provided
with adequate facilities. In case of kids not
showing improvement in education or have

some problems in learning, KDF review the situation and take appropriate steps to
facilitate them. Most of the times a change in school bring positive impact on the
performance of a kid. Sometimes shift from government to a private school serve the
purpose. In such cases where guardians were quite poor, KDF used to pay school fee
of the orphans as well. This fee payment is in addition to the monthly assistance.

RAMADAN/EID GIFTS:
We dont forget the orphans on the occasion
of Eids. With the financial help of DMAID,
Karwan Development Foundation manages to
support orphans in Ramadan too. KDF team
visited Nowshehra and Muzaffarabad in the
month of Ramadan to distribute food items for
Aftaar and clothes as Eid gift. In Nowshera
where people were very poor besides
providing them with two suit pieces they were
also given money for stitching as well to the
orphans. In AJK we distributed stitched clothes
to orphans with food items for Aftaar

ANNUAL TOUR:

KDF used to arrange annual recreational

tours for orphans mainly to provide them
with an opportunity to enjoy and see
different parts of the country. In March 2013,
we took orphans from different villages of
Muzaffarabad to Neelum Valley, a famous
picnic spot; known for its picturesque
beauty. The three days tour was arranged
with the best possible facilities. Quality
transport and best available places were

development sector and training industry
with us in the tour.
Mr. Faisal Qureshi from Rite to play, Mirza
Ibrahim Ahmad from Goal, Mr. Masood
Rasuli from Funkada, Ms. Masoora Ali
from VSO, Ms. Lubna Kiyani from Lahore

as volunteers in this trip and traveled from
Islamabad to Muzaffarabad and then to
Neelum Valley with orphans.
These volunteers engage orphans in
different healthy activities, and the motive
was to explore their personalities and
capabilities. Orphans really enjoyed the
company of these volunteers and the
activities. During this stay few orphans who
were introvert not only come out and gave
their reflections on host of things and also
participated in different games and
competitions made part of the visit. We were
all delighted to see these kids smiling,
enjoying participating in the tour.
We were honored to have the presence of
Chairman of board Mr. Nadeem Niwaz and
his father (individual sponsor of DM AID for
OSP) Mr. Nawaz in this visit.
Management of KDF and DM AID was
involved with the orphans in the games and
different competition regardless of age and
designation.

At the end, all kids were dropped to their homes with responsibility and care.
As always it was a well managed and memorable trip, volunteers engaged orphans in
different group activities. Orphans played games, present different type of performances
including singing and acting.
Orphans maintain the code of conduct initially explained to them during their
stay and travelling.

ORPHANS EDUCATION
Under the program education is mandatory for every orphan and in this connection KDF
coordinator in Muzaffarabad paid special attention towards the education of each and

every student enrolled in the program and pay regular visit to the schools where these
kids are studying. On monitoring the performances of few orphans and their schools,
KDF changed the schools of Orphan. Few of our enrolled orphans are now studying in
9th and 10th grade. Here is the detailed report of the performance of these orphans
during the academic year 2013. All these orphans are from Muzaffarabad.

PROGRAM MONITORING

He remained in contact with each and every orphan besides paying them, regular

TRANSFER OF SAVINGS
A unique and important feature of the program is to transfer the savings, when a male
orphan reached 18 years of age or when a girl got married. This is to support the
orphan child in his or her coming lifes need. KDF reviews the orphans need and decide
the mode of transfer of savings to the orphan.
In 2013 there were two orphan girls who got married i.e. Asia and Nagina.
Nagina got married in the beginning of the
year, she was asked about her need and
desire before her wedding. So upon her stated
need, KDF provided two goats to Nagina. A
dinner set, water set and a water cooler was
also gifted to her on her wedding. Currently
she is having 6 goats in total from the one pair
provided at the time of her wedding. She is
happy and getting benefit from the animals.
Nagina had been associated with OSP for 6
years. In the picture, Nagina is with the gifts
and 2 goats.

Asia Bibi was married in the end of the year;

she completed her intermediate from Govt
College Muzaffarabad. She was a small kid
when enrolled in Orphan Support Program.
Alhamdolillah she got married and expenses of
her marriage were contributed from OSP.
Since she was without parents, her sending off
(Rukhsati or Barat) was managed by Mr.
Muhammad Mushtaq who is coordinator of
Karwan Development Foundation in Kashmir.
He also gifted some money to her on marriage
considering her his daughter. We can see Asia

This is important to share that all the people involved in this program ---individual
donors in Denmark, people associated with Danish Muslim Aid and staff of Karwan
Development Foundation are all blessed by Allah SWT. God Almighty has chosen all of
them to serve orphans. All such people are lucky because orphans pray for them; who
are very near to Allah.
