the ECM compares the signal from the engine speed sensor to the signal from the torque converter
output speed sensor. A diagnostic code is recorded when the signal from the engine speed sensor
is below the dropout value and the engine speed is above low idle. This problem prevents the
ECM from calculating the ratio of the torque converter.
Note: The engine must be running. The engine speed signal must be received from the torque
converter output speed sensor in order for the ECM to display this diagnostic code as being
present.
Test Step 1. CHECK THE RESISTANCE OF THE SENSOR.
A. Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the machine harness from the speed sensor.
C. Measure the resistance between the two contacts of the connector for the speed sensor.
Expected Result:
The resistance measurement should be between 110 ohms and 200 ohms.
Results:
OK - The resistance measurement is between 110 ohms and 200 ohms. The speed sensor
has not failed. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The resistance measurement is not between 110 ohms and 200 ohms.
Repair: The speed sensor has failed. Replace the sensor. Adjust the speed sensor properly
when the sensor is being installed. See Testing and Adjusting, "Speed Sensor - Adjust".
Verify that the new sensor corrects the problem.
Stop.
Test Step 2. CHECK THE RETURN CIRCUIT.
A. The machine harness remains disconnected from the sensor.
B. Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
C. At the machine harness connector for the sensor, measure the resistance between contact 1
(G939-PK) and frame ground.
Expected Result:
The resistance should measure 20 ohms or less.
Results:
OK - The resistance measures 20 ohms or less. The return circuit is correct. Proceed to Test
Step 3.
NOT OK - The resistance does not measure 20 ohms or less.
Repair: The return circuit (G939-PK) in the machine harness has excessive resistance
(open). Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

HARNESS.
A. At the machine harness connector for the speed sensor, place a jumper between the two
contacts.
B. Disconnect the machine harness connectors J1 and J2 from the ECM.
C. At the machine harness connectors J1 and J2, measure the resistance from J2-38 (sensor
signal) to J1-15 (the return circuit) and to J1-16 (the return circuit).
Expected Result:
There should be less than 5.0 ohms resistance.
Results:
OK - There is less than 5.0 ohms resistance. The signal circuit in the machine harness is
correct. Proceed to Test Step 4.
NOT OK - There is not less than 5.0 ohms resistance.
Repair: The signal circuit (450-YL) is open in the machine harness. Repair the machine
harness or replace the machine harness.
Stop.
Test Step 4. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT.
A. If a jumper was used in a previous step, remove the jumper.
B. Reconnect the machine harness to the speed sensor.
C. At the harness connector J1 and harness connector J2, measure the resistance between J2-38
(450-YL) and all sources of positive voltage and ground. The possible sources of positive
voltage are contacts J1-1, J1-4, J1-6, J1-8, J1-10, J1-11, J1-12, J1-17, J1-18, J1-40, J2-1, J22, J2-7, J2-8, J2-13, J2-19, and J2-37. The possible sources of ground are contact J1-2,
contact J1-5, contact J1-7, contact J1-15, contact J1-16, contact J2-3, and frame ground.
Expected Result:
Each resistance should be greater than 5000 ohms.
Results:
OK - Each resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to
Test Step 5.
NOT OK - Each resistance is not greater than 5000 ohms.
Repair: There is a short in the machine harness. The short is between the signal circuit (450
-YL) and the circuit that has a low resistance measurement. Repair the machine harness or
replace the machine harness.

brake pedal is fully pressed. A diagnostic code is recorded when the ECM detects an open circuit
and the switch is near the floor.
The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:
The Signal circuit (G731-GY) is open or shorted.
+Battery wire (198-RD) is open.
The switch is not adjusted correctly.
The switch has failed.
The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.
System Response:
The diagnostic code causes the backup circuit for the engagement of the brakes from the service
brake pedal to not function. The indicator for the brake on the Caterpillar Monitoring System will
FLASH. The service brake will continue to operate correctly.
Note: A diagnostic code for the service brake pedal position sensor (CID 0468) can affect the
status of CID 0298 FMI 02. Also, check for a problem with the electrical system (CID 0168).
Check for any diagnostic codes for the secondary brake solenoid (CID 0722). Clear CID 0168
diagnostic code, CID 0468 diagnostic code or CID 0722 diagnostic code before you proceed.
Note: The status of the service brake pedal switch is updated only when the brake pedal is
pressed. In order to correctly determine the status of the switch, turn the keyswitch to the ON
position while the brake pedal is released. Then, press the brake pedal completely. Use this same
procedure in order to clear the diagnostic code after repairs have been made.
Test Step 1. CHECK THE BATTERY VOLTAGE FOR THE SWITCH.
A. Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
B. Disconnect the machine harness from the connector of the switch.
C. At the machine harness, measure the voltage between contact 1 and frame ground.
Expected Result:
The voltage should be greater than 22 VDC.
Results:
OK - The voltage is greater than 22 VDC. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The voltage is not greater than 22 VDC.
Repair: There is an open circuit or there is a short circuit. Check the fuse for the dump
valve. Check for an open circuit or short circuit in wire 198-RD from the fuse for the dump
valve to the switch. Repair the cause of the open circuit or the short circuit.
Stop.
Test Step 2. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND.

A. The machine harness remains disconnected from the switch.

B. Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
C. Disconnect the machine harness from the secondary brake solenoid.
D. Disconnect the machine harness connectors J1 and J2 from the ECM.
E. At machine harness connector J1 and J2, measure the resistance from contact J1-8 (solenoid
signal) to all possible sources of ground. The possible ground sources are contact J1-2,
contact J1-5, contact J1-7, contact J1-15, contact J1-16, contact J2-3 and frame ground.
Expected Result:
Each resistance should be greater than 5000 ohms.
Results:
OK - Each resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The machine harness is not shorted to
ground. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - Each resistance is not greater than 5000 ohms.
Repair: There is a short in the machine harness. The short is between the signal circuit for
the solenoid J1-8 (G731-GY) and a ground source. The possible ground sources are contact
J1-2 (202-BK), contact J1-5 ( 202-BK), contact J1-7 (975-WH), contact J1-15 (G939-PK),
contact J1-16 (G939-PK), contact J2-3 (975-WH) and frame ground. Repair the machine
harness or replace the machine harness.
Stop.
Test Step 3. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN.
A. The machine harness remains disconnected from the switch.
B. At the machine harness connector for the switch, place a jumper from contact 2 (G731-GY)
to frame ground.
C. At machine harness connector J1, measure the resistance from contact J1-8 (solenoid signal)
to frame ground.
Expected Result:
There should be less than 5.0 ohms of resistance.
Results:
OK - There is less than 5.0 ohms of resistance. Proceed to Test Step 4.
NOT OK - There is not less than 5.0 ohms of resistance.
Repair: There is an open circuit in the machine harness. The open is in wire G731-GY of
the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

Test Step 4. CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE SWITCH.

Note: The state of the switch should change within a certain range of motion of the service brake
pedal position sensor. Component Data Display Mode is used in order to compare the state of the
switch to the position of the sensor. When the Component Data Display Mode is entered and CID
0468 (brake pedal sensor) is selected, the duty cycle of the sensor and the state of the switch are
shown at the same time.
A. If a jumper was used in a previous step, remove the jumper.
B. Reconnect all harness connectors.
C. Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
D. Enter component data display mode and select CID 0468. The left side of the display shows
the state of the switch ("O" or "C"). The right side of the display shows the duty cycle of the
sensor ("000" to "100"). Such as "O 018", the switch is open and the sensor has a duty cycle
of 18%.
E. While the brake pedal is fully released, record the value for the duty cycle of the sensor.
F. Slowly depress the pedal until the state of the switch changes from "O" to "C". Record the
value of the duty cycle of the sensor.
Note: If the display does not change from "O" to "C", the switch is too far out of adjustment
or the switch has failed. Manually adjust the switch in order to change the state of the switch
when the pedal is fully pressed. The state of the switch does not change when the switch is
manually adjusted. The switch has failed. Replace the switch.
G. With values that were recorded in the previous steps, calculate the difference of the values.
The sign of the calculated value is not important.
Expected Result:
The calculated value must be within specifications. The value should be in the range that is listed
below:
For the D5M, D6M, D6R, and D7R, the value should be 15 to 21.
For the D8R, the value should be 18 to 20.
For the D10R and D11R, the value should be 14 to 16.
Results:
OK - The value is within the specified range. Proceed to Test Step 5.
NOT OK - The value is not within the specified range.
Repair: Adjust the trip point of the switch through the hole in the front of the pedal housing
until the state of the switch changes within the specified range.
Stop.
Test Step 5. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE IS STILL ACTIVE.

Schematic of the Position Sensor of the Service Brake Pedal for D6R Series II, D7R Series II and D8R Series II
machines

This diagnostic code is recorded when the ECM reads the duty cycle of the sensor as being out of
range.
The position sensor is a PWM sensor that operates at a frequency of approximately 5 kHz. The
sensor has an operating duty cycle of 3.5% to 94%.
The possible causes of this condition are listed below:
The signal circuit is shorted to the +battery circuit or shorted to ground intermittently.
The signal circuit is open intermittently or the sensor is disconnected.
The sensor may have failed.
The ECM may have failed. This is unlikely.
Note: This diagnostic code is usually an intermittent condition. The diagnostic code may be active
or the diagnostic code may not be active.
Note: This procedure can cause new diagnostic codes to be recorded. Ignore these created
diagnostic codes. When the procedure is completed, clear the created diagnostic codes.
Test Step 1. CHECK FOR POWER AT THE SENSOR.
A. Do not disconnect the harness connector from the sensor.
B. At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, insert a 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe
along contact A (wire 140-BU) for the voltage supply.
C. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the ON position.

D. Measure the voltage from contact A (wire 140-BU) to contact B (wire G939-PK).
For D6R Series II, D7R Series II and D8R Series II, measure the voltage from contact A
(wire 140-BU) to contact B (wire 202-BK).
Expected Result:
The voltage is between 9 to 32 VDC.
Results:
OK - The voltage is between 9 to 32 VDC. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - The voltage is not between 9 to 32 VDC. The circuit is open.
Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
STOP
Test Step 2. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT OF THE SENSOR.
A. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
B. At the harness connector for the sensor, remove the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe from contact
A and insert the probe along the signal wire (contact C).
C. At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, insert the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe
along the ground wire (contact B).
D. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
E. Monitor the signal of the sensor with the 146-4080 Digital Multimeter .
F. Without disconnecting the sensor or the hardware that is associated with the sensor from the
machine, take the sensor through the full operating range of the sensor.
Expected Result:
The signal of the sensor responds in the manner that is described at the beginning of this
procedure.
Results:
OK - The signal of the sensor responds correctly. The sensor is operating correctly. Proceed
to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - The signal of the sensor does not respond correctly. The sensor is NOT
operating correctly.
Repair: Replace the sensor.

B. Insert the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probes into the back of the ECM connector along J2-18
(wire F790-BR) and J1-16 (wire G939-PK).
For D6R Series II, D7R Series II and D8R Series II, insert the probes along J2-18 (wire
F790-BR) and J1-2 (wire 202-BK).
C. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
D. Monitor the signal of the sensor with the 146-4080 Digital Multimeter .
Proceed
to Test Step 4.
NOT OK - The signal of the sensor does not respond correctly. The harness has failed.
Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
STOP
Test Step 4. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT IN THE HARNESS.
A. The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the machine harness connectors from the sensor and the ECM.
C. Measure the resistance between contact J2-18 (wire F790-BR) and all contacts that are used
in the machine harness connectors for the ECM.
Expected Result:
The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.
Results:
OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The circuit is correct. Proceed to Test Step
5.
NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. The signal circuit is shorted to another circuit
in the harness.
Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
STOP
Test Step 5. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE REMAINS.
A. Inspect the harness connectors and clean the contacts of the machine harness connectors.

B. Reconnect all harness connectors.

C. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
D. Operate the machine.
E. Check the status of the CID 0468 FMI 08 diagnostic code.
Expected Result:
The CID 0468 FMI 08 diagnostic code is not active.
Results:
OK - The CID 0468 FMI 08 diagnostic code is not active. The diagnostic code does not
exist at this time. The initial diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor connection or a
short at one of the connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal
operation.STOP
NOT OK - The CID 0468 FMI 08 diagnostic code is active. The diagnostic code has not
been corrected. The ECM may have failed.
Repair: It is unlikely that the ECM has failed. Exit this procedure and perform this
procedure again. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, replace the ECM. Prior to
replacing an ECM, always contact your dealership's Technical Communicator for possible
consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. See the
Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace" section of this
manual for additional information.

Note: Ensure that CID 0722 FMI 03 is on hold and that the fault present indicator shows "SERV
CODE". In order to correctly determine the status of the fault present indicator, turn the keyswitch
ON while the brake pedal is completely released. Completely depress the pedal and release the
pedal again. The fault present indicator will only show "SERV CODE" for CID 0722 FMI 03
when the pedal is released. This will happen only after the pedal has been cycled completely since
the last powerup. Use the same procedure in order to clear the diagnostic code after repairs have
been made.
Test Step 1. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT OF THE SOLENOID FOR SHORT TO
+BATTERY.
A. Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
B. Ensure that the service brake pedal is NOT depressed near the floor.
C. Disconnect the machine harness from the solenoid.
D. Disconnect the machine harness connectors J1 and J2 from the ECM.
E. At machine harness connector J1 and J2, measure the resistance from the J1-8 (solenoid
signal) to all possible sources of +battery. The possible sources of positive voltage are
contacts J1-1, J1-4, J1-6, J1-10, J1-11, J1-12, J1-17, J1-18, J1-40, J2-1, J2-2, J2-7, J2-8, J213, J2-19, and J2-37.
Expected Result:
Each resistance should be greater than 5000 ohms.
Results:
OK - The machine harness is correct. Proceed to test step 2.
NOT OK - There is a short in the machine harness.
Repair: The short is between wire G731-GY(solenoid signal) and the circuit with the low
resistance measurement. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
Stop.
Test Step 2. CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE SERVICE BRAKE SWITCH.
Note: The state of the service brake switch should change within a certain range of motion of the
service brake pedal. Component Data Display Mode is used in order to compare the state of the
switch to the position of the sensor. When you are in the Component Data Display Mode and CID
0468 is selected, the duty cycle of the sensor and the state of the switch are shown at the same
time.
A. Reconnect all harness connectors.
B. Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
C. Enter the component data display mode and select CID 0468. The left side of the display
shows the state of the switch ("O" or "C"). The right side of the display shows the duty
cycle of the sensor ("000" to "100"). For example, a display of "O 018" indicates that the
switch is open and the sensor has a duty cycle of 18%.

D6M & D6M LGP Track-Type Tractors 3116 Engine 3WN00001-UP (MACHINE)... Pgina 3 de 4

D. Record the value of the duty cycle for the sensor while the brake pedal is fully released.
E. Slowly depress the pedal until the state of the switch changes from "O" to "C". Record the
value of the duty cycle of the sensor.
Note: If the display does not change from "O" to "C", the switch is too far out of adjustment
or the switch is faulty. Adjust the switch manually in order to change the state of the switch
when the pedal is fully depressed. Continue with this procedure. If the state of the switch
does not change, the switch is faulty. Replace the switch.
F. Calculate the difference between the values that were recorded in step "2.d" and step "2.e".
The result of the calculation is called the differential value. The sign of the value that is
calculated is of no importance.
Expected Result:
The difference in the value of step "2.f" must be within specifications. The differential value is
described in the following list:
For the D5M, D6M, D6R and D7R the differential value is 15 to 21.
For the D10R and D11R the differential value is 14 to 16.
Results:
OK - Proceed to test step 3.
NOT OK - The differential value does not fall within the specified range.
Repair: Adjust the trip point for the switch through the hole in the front of the pedal
housing. Adjust the switch until the state of the switch changes within the specified range.
Stop.
Test Step 3. DETERMINE IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE IS STILL ACTIVE.
A. Inspect the contacts and clean the contacts of the harness connectors.
B. Reconnect all harness connectors.
C. Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
D. Enter service mode of the Caterpillar Monitoring System and clear all inactive diagnostic
codes.
E. Operate the machine. Be sure to use full range of the brake pedal during operation.
F. Stop the machine and release the service brake pedal.
G. Determine if the diagnostic code is present.
Expected Result:
The diagnostic code is present. "SERV CODE" is showing.
Results:

YES - The problem has not been corrected. The ECM has failed.
Repair: Exit this procedure and perform the diagnostic code procedure again. If the
problem persists, the ECM may have failed. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your
dealership's Technical Communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This
consultation may greatly reduce repair time. See the Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic
Control Module (ECM) - Replace".
Stop.
NO - The diagnostic code is NOT present. The problem does not exist at this time. The
initial problem was probably caused by a poor electrical connection or a short at one of the
harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine
operation. Stop.
