particle.
A phrasal verb is a multi-word
verb that consists of a verb and
one or two particles. A particle
may be an adverb or a
preposition, or an adverb plus a
preposition.
These combinations create a
meaning different from the original
verb. The meaning is not always
obvious from looking at the words
alone; sometimes the meaning is
completely different. It can have a
literal meaning that is easy to
understand because the meaning is
clear from the words. It can also have
an idiomatic meaning that cannot be
understood by just by looking at the
words themselves.
The same phrasal verb can
have different meanings.
