Statement of Scope for the Annotated Bibliography
As people grow older they find interests in many diverse areas and form their own
personality. In a perfect world everyone would be getting paid for what they love to do but career
choosing can be way more difficult than that. Choosing a career can be the biggest decision of
your life. In many schools and communities our youth are being pressured to choose a career
choice or interest before their junior year of high school. The curriculum and teaching is
supposed to have students prepared for this decision. The pressure of deciding what youre going
to do in the future and how youre going to support yourself and others suddenly rests on your
shoulders. Although some may say that choosing a career path early in life is ideal for
preparation and success; making such an important decision at such a young and impressionable
age isn't the best option for someone who still has so much to learn.
In this essay I will explain the stress and pressure that goes into choosing a career at a
young age. Many school administrators think its good plan your route in life at the age of
fourteen but a fourteen year old may not even know who they truly are yet. I will analyze how
the pressure of ones future builds and builds on the shoulders of a high school student. Also I
will be going into the positives of picking a career path at such a young age. I will implement the
ideas and thoughts of some students and scholars as in why picking a career plan early can be
valuable or extremely dreadful for some.
This selected bibliography includes sources that address the importance of knowing
yourself, goals you need to achieve your career plan, and the weight that goes into your
decisions. While most of my articles were written by scholars, few were written by actual high
school students. The Ellis and Noel articles explain the importance of knowing yourself and self
assessment. The authors explain that when one goes to choose a career plan, they should do
something that correlates with them, and how their personalities can benefit from a career. The
writers include the idea that not many of our youth know their personalities during their early
years of high school. The Authors David Walsh and Julie Quimby both incorporate the idea that
the people around you and, the places that you come from can affect your career choices. Walsh
explains that choosing a career early can be favorable, and that creating goals will help a
determined youth reach their career plans. Writer Cassandra Hayes tells her readers that choosing
the right path should only be your choice. No outside forces should be telling you what to do on
your path; which for high school students can be very hard. These sources explained many things
that go into the decision of choosing a career; but could have gotten into more detail, about what
can be going through a high schoolers head while deciding this.
