POSITIVE OUTLOOK FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE HIRING

post-sales functions in key industries, however we are seeing an increase in demand
for talent in industries such as education and FMCG/luxury. E-commerce and
professional services are also new exciting options for bright and aspiring customer
service professionals.

Customer service includes a variety of roles, from pre- and post-sales to quality
management and process improvement. There is a growing need for companies to
be specialised in their customer experience and journey, which is forcing customer
service in companies to be more quality driven, work more closely with internal
departments, drive performance and standards, and improve cost structure. This
makes Singapore a more specialised market with fewer call centre roles and more
niche roles. Industries such as education, telecommunications, consumer/ FMCG,
logistics, supply chain and manufacturing, aviation and oil and gas, and insurance/

challenge to professionals looking to change industries. There is a lack of focus on
this market, and Page Personnel works as an exclusive employment partner with
both jobseekers and clients.

CAREER EXPERT
Dear Chris,
I want to start in a new job early next year. When is the best time to start applying, now or then?
Regards,
Abdullah

Dear Abdullah,
If you want to start a new job early next year
it would be a good idea to start applying
for jobs right now as the recruitment
process can take two to three months to
complete. By making job applications now
you can line up interviews in December,
and hopefully receive a job offer before
companies take time off over Christmas
and the New Year. That way you can enjoy
the holidays too and start fresh in January.
If you decide to apply for jobs in January
you could be waiting until March or

April before you start your new role as

companies sometimes dont fully return
to work until February. So, unless youre
planning on staying in your existing job
for longer, or want to take an extended
break yourself over the festive season, we
suggest updating you resume and drafting
some cover letters today!
Candidates can feel more confident in
2015 improving economic conditions in
Singapore are making companies more
confident about their hiring plans, so its
a good time to take stock of your career.

A recruiting expert can help develop a

game plan for finding your next job by
matching the best one for you and your
career aspirations in the short, medium
and long-term.

LEADERSHIP IN A CRISIS
HOW TO BE A LEADER

By Margaret Lim

What is one trait you look for in

an interview candidate?
Apart from a list of behavioural skills and
competencies required of KPMG professionals, the
one trait that forms the basis of everything else is a
positive mindset and attitude. To me, there are many
capabilities which are innate, learnt or developed,
but without the right attitude, the other attributes
would simply be meaningless. A positive attitude
typically reflects a persons willingness to learn,
openness to try different things and a constructive
mindset when faced with difficult challenges.

How can employees make a lasting

impression on you at work?
An employee can make a lasting impression by
contributing positively to problem-solving. There
are usually two kinds of people at work when they
are confronted by problems: those who react to
problems, but provide nothing constructive to the
solutioning process; and those who step back,
analyse the problem, present various ideas and
options, and help the team to arrive at certain
assumptions which have been systematically
thought through. The latter is obviously the better
of the two.
On the flip side, employees who make the
least positive impressions are those who react
emotionally to a situation, blame everyone else for
the problem, and those who add to the complexity
by making negative statements and influencing
others with his or her negativity.

What is the biggest business

challenge you see in your
industry now?
In my view, one of the biggest business
challenges has not changed dramatically
over the years. This challenge remains our
ability to attract, develop and retain our most
talented people. As my industry relies heavily
on intellectual capital, the ability to service our
clients is dependent on the quality of people
we have in our firm. In more specific terms, it
is about how capable we are in delivering our
professional service offerings, delighting our
customers and inspiring confidence in the
extremely competitive marketplace. These

would include providing deep sector knowledge

and guidance, possessing the necessary client
relationship skills and working effectively in
teams across service lines and geographies.
Our competitive advantage is about having the
right people as that would significantly impact
our goal of being the preferred supplier of
professional and consultancy services.

Where would you like to be in

your career five years from now?
I foresee that in five years, my focus will remain on
our people and talent agenda, but I would certainly
like to see further innovations in our ability to
engage with our people and build a successful
leadership pipeline to secure the firms future as a
preferred employer and supplier. Most importantly,
I would like to leave behind a legacy of progressive
talent practices which will significantly impact our
people. Once this is achieved, I believe the future
will be in the capable hands of leaders who will
bring our business ambitions to even greater levels
of success, provide the best career opportunities
for our people and those who will continue to
positively contribute to the communities we touch.

What is your definition of a

lifelong learner?
A lifelong learner is someone who embraces
the philosophy of continuous learning. It does
not matter if it benefits his or her professional
or personal life. Lifelong learners are those who
embrace change and are willing to open their
minds to knowledge or conventions which are
often outside their comfort levels. As we age, we
risk forming fixed assumptions about the world.
We stick to old conventions because they are tried
and proven, and avoid the road less travelled.
Finally, we pass down prescriptive advice on
many things because we embrace familiarity
and believe we know it all. The reality is that
knowledge is compounding at such an amazing
rate due to technological advances in networking
and connectivity that it is virtually impossible to
exhaust your learning opportunities. I believe that
lifelong learning will no longer be a choice but a
matter of survival especially if we aim to be on
this earth for a long, long time.

Here are seven lessons for leaders charged with leading their organizations through a crisis:
Lesson 1: Leaders must face reality. Reality starts with the person in charge. Leaders need to look
themselves in the mirror and recognize their role in creating the problems. Then they should gather
their teams together and gain agreement about the root causes. Widespread recognition of reality is
the crucial step before problems can be solved. Attempting to find short-term fixes that address the
symptoms of the crisis only ensures the organization will wind up back in the same predicament.
In order to understand the real reasons for the crisis, everyone on the leadership team must be
willing to tell the whole truth. Leaders cant solve problems if they dont acknowledge their existence.
Lesson 2: No matter how bad things are, they will get worse. Faced with bad news, many leaders
cannot believe that things could really be so grim. Consequently, they try to convince the bearers of bad
news that things arent so bad, and swift action can make problems go away.
This causes leaders to undershoot the mark in terms of corrective actions. As a consequence, they
wind up taking a series of steps, none of which is powerful enough to correct the downward spiral.
It is far better for leaders to anticipate the worst and get out in front of it. If they restructure their cost
base for the worst case, they can get their organization healthy for the turnaround when it comes
and take advantage of opportunities that present themselves.
Lesson 3: Build a mountain of cash, and get to the highest hill. In good times leaders worry
more about earnings per share and revenue growth than they do about their balance sheets. In a
crisis, cash is king. Forget about earnings-per-share and all those stock market measures. The
question is, Does your organization have sufficient cash to survive the most dire circumstances?
Lesson 4: Get the world off your shoulders. In a crisis, many leaders act like Atlas, carrying the
weight of the world on their shoulders. They go into isolation, and think they can solve the problem
themselves. In reality, leaders must have the help of all their people to devise solutions and to
implement them. This means bringing people into their confidence, asking them for help and ideas,
and gaining their commitment to painful corrective actions.
Lesson 5: Before asking others to sacrifice, first volunteer yourself. If there are sacrifices to
be made and there will be then the leaders should step up and make the greatest sacrifices
themselves. Everyone is watching to see what the leaders do. Will they stay true to their values?
Will they bow to external pressures, or confront the crisis in a straight-forward manner? Will they be
seduced by short-term rewards, or will they make near-term sacrifices in order to fix the long-term
situation?
Lesson 6: Never waste a good crisis. When things are going well, people resist major changes
or try to get by with minor adaptations. A crisis provides the leader with the platform to get things
done that were required anyway and offers the sense of urgency to accelerate their implementation.
Lesson 7: Be aggressive in the marketplace. This may sound counter-intuitive, but a crisis offers
the best opportunity to change the game in your favor, with new products or services to gain market
share. Many people look at a crisis as something to get through, until they can go back to business
as usual. But business as usual never returns because markets are irrevocably changed. Why
not create the changes that move the market in your favor, instead of waiting and reacting to the
changes as they take place?
TIPS:
Face reality. Leaders cant solve problems if they dont acknowledge their existence.
If there are sacrifices to be made, leaders should step up and make the greatest
sacrifices themselves.
Leaders must have the help of all their people to devise solutions and to implement them.
