Overview
NIMultisimisapowerfulschematiccaptureandsimulationenvironmentthatengineers,students,andprofessorscanusetosimulate
electroniccircuitsandprototypePrintedCircuitBoards(PCBs).Thisarticleshowsyouhowtocapture,simulate,andlayoutyourfirst
designinMultisim.
Theexamplecircuitinthearticleisanamplifiercircuit.Thisnoninvertingoperationalamplifierconfigurationconsistsofoneactive
component(theoperationalamplifier)andtwopassiveresistorcomponentsthatwillbeusedtocompletethefeedbacknetworkto
providegaininthiscircuit.

1.Introduction
Forthisintroductoryexample,youwillsimulateastandardnoninvertingoperationalamplifiercircuit(showninFigure1).Thegainofthis
noninvertingamplifieriscalculatedbytheexpressionGain=1+R1/R2.Therefore,ifR1=R2,thenthegainisequalto2,whichyouwill
verifywhenyouruninteractivesimulationinMultisim.

BeginbydrawingyourschematicintheMultisimenvironment.
1. OpenMultisimbyselectingAllProgramsNationalInstrumentsCircuitDesignSuite13.0Multisim13.0.

componentsinareadonlyformat.TheCorporateDatabaseiswhereyoucansavecustomcomponentstobesharedwithcolleagues.
Finally,theUserDatabaseiswherecustomcomponentsaresavedthatcanbeusedonlybythespecificdesigner.

Thecomponents(orparts)areorganizedintoGroupsandFamiliestointuitivelyandlogicallygroupcommonpartstogetherand
makesearchingeasierandmoreeffective.
TheComponentBrowsershowsthecomponentname,symbol,functionaldescription,model,andfootprintallinasinglepopup.
3. SelecttheSourcesGroupandhighlightthePOWER_SOURCESfamily.
4. SelecttheGROUNDcomponent(asshowninFigure2).
5. ClickOK.TheSelectaComponentwindowtemporarilyclosesandthegroundsymbolisghostedtothemousepointer.
6. Movethemousetotheappropriateplaceontheworkspaceandleftclickoncetoplacethecomponent.Afterplacingthecomponent,
theSelectaComponentwindowwillopenagainautomatically.
7. GototheSourcesGroupagainandhighlightthePOWER_SOURCESFamily(ifnotalreadyhighlightedfromtheprevious
selection).
8. SelecttheDC_POWERcomponent.
9. PlacetheDC_POWERcomponentontheschematic.
10. Repeatsteps7,8and9toplaceasecondDC_POWERcomponent.

Withoutapowerandgroundyoursimulationcannotrun.
Ifyouneedmultiplecomponentsyoucanrepeattheplacementstepsasshownorplaceonecomponentandusecopy(Ctrl+C)and

3.PartB:WiringtheSchematic
Multisimisamodelesswiringenvironment.ThismeansthatMultisimdeterminesthefunctionalityofthemousepointerbythepositionof
themouse.Youdonothavetoreturntothemenutoselectbetweentheplacement,wiring,andeditingtools.
1. Beginwiringbymovingthemousepointerclosetoapinofacomponent.Themouseappearsasacrosshairratherthanthedefault
mousepointer.
2. Placeaninitialwirejunctionbyclickingonthepin/terminalofthepart(inthiscase,theoutputpinoftheopamp).
3. Completethewirebymovingthemousetoanotherterminalorjustdoubleclicktoanchortheterminationpointofthewiretoa
floatinglocationsomewhereintheschematicwindow.
4. CreateacopyofthegroundsymbolusingCopy<Ctrl+C>andPaste<Ctrl+V>.

5.PartD:TransferringtoPCBLayout
WearenowreadytotransfertheMultisimdesigntoUltiboardforPCBlayout.Inpreparationforthisweneedtotakeintoconsideration
thatsources(power,signal)andgroundarevirtualcomponents,therefore,theycannotbetransferredtoUltiboard.Also,allcomponents
mustincludefootprintinformation.Itisagoodpracticetoreplacepowersourcesandgroundwithconnectors.
1. RemoveV1,V2,V3andtheOscilloscopefromtheschematic.DonotremovetheOnpageconnectors.
2. OpentheComponentBrowser,andplacethe2828344terminalblockfromtheConnectorsGroup,TERMINAL_BLOCKSFamilly.
Thisconnectorwillbeusedtoconnectthepowersupplies(+V,V).
3. Connectpin1oftheconnectortothe+VOnpageconnector,pin4totheVOnpageconnector,andpins2and3toground,as
