scenes. Christmas
is clearly upon us. And each
year it seems to come earlier
and earlier. This year, a New
York City radio station was
playing 24/7 Christmas music
by the end of November.
Those who shopped in malls
were hearing the sounds of
Christmas long before the
meals were being made for
Thanksgiving.
What is Christmas? It

must mean something more

than just a consumer free-forall that engulfs our culture for
the last month of every year.
But how do we untangle that
which is the core of Christmas
and that which has been
appended to it (such as Santa
Claus and reindeer) as the
years have progressed?
Obviously, the best place
to turn to is the source.

PAID ADVERTORIAL

Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back! Really?

By Mark Charnet

wo months ago, my
youngest son Sam
needed a new phone
and our Verizon family plan
could not accommodate
another line. I really wanted
to put him on our plan, as we
have no limit on data or talk
time, as were the plans of 5 or
so years ago. Today, the majority of phone plans, regardless
of carrier, charge for data or
limit you and those that dont
charge, reduce your speed
when you exceed a certain
level of data each month. Sam
is 14 which means he, by generation, is a data hog and an
unlimited data plan is essential to his psyche and my wallet too! What is a father to do?
Lo and behold, Sprint,
introduced an unlimited data
plan that would not slow
down upon reaching a set
usage level. Immediately, we
sped to our local Sprint Kiosk,
to purchase a new Samsung
Galaxy S-5 Android phone
with unlimited data plan.The
phone cost over $600 and the
plan was $60 per month where
they would finance the phone
with no interest at just $50 per
month. Sam, remember, is 14
so an insurance plan is critical,
adding another $11 to the
monthly bill bringing the total
to just over $100 per month.
Ok, we walk away with
the best phone on the market,
unlimited data and a satisfaction guarantee, not happy, get
your money back. Well not
exactly, as we found out.
Service was fine except, near
Wayne Hills High School, the
phone doesnt work very well,

exactly where Sam happens to

be 5 days a week. Though he
doesnt use the phone every
day, we decided to give Sprint
the opportunity to better the
situation by explaining to
them our dilemma. After 4
weeks, we attempted to cancel
the service, trying to portover the phone to Verizon,
who has excellent service at
the high school. Sprint refused
to tell me anything about my
account unless I told them my
account password or my childhood best friend. I couldnt
answer their questions, as I
never supplied the information to them since I was never
asked the questions when we
initially purchased the phone
and service. They refused to
help me disconnect the
phone. I asked for managers,
supervisors and vice presidents
to speak to, explaining that I
cannot possibly answer any
questions for which I had not
previously given information.
I even visited the Sprint location in Butler to cancel the
account and get a refund for
the phone. The clerk said I
had to return to Willow Brook
as each were third party retailers; not corporate owned
stores and they were the only
ones that could help us. I was
furious to say the least as this
had consumed many hours of
energy already.
So next I went to the
Verizon store, after receiving a
special chip by overnight
mail directly from Verizon corporate, to place in the phone
so Verizon could communicate
with it. You see, up to this

point I was under the impression that a Samsung Galaxy S5 phone could use any service
provider, after all, it is the

newest phone on the market

and available from a myriad of
retailers as well. Boy was I
wrong! The Verizon store
informed me that even with
the chip installed, the phone
would not operate properly or
perhaps at all with Verizon,
because this was a Sprint
phone, unique and manufactured exclusively for them and
cannot be ported over to anyone. Now, I had to go back to
the kiosk where I found out
the salesman made-up the
answers to the security questions and password, neglecting
to tell me what they were.
Further, after speaking with
the Sprint tech people directly
from the kiosk, the phone
could not be changed to any
other service provider and I
could not get a refund as I was
over the 14 day window of
opportunity, even though the

reason for delay was to remedy

the problem. Earlier, the
Sprint home office told me I
couldnt port the phone unless

I paid the bill in full, (which

was the balance of the phone
purchase price) so I did, right
on the phone with my AMEX
card. So now, I have a paid for
Sprint phone that cant be
changed to Verizon, the
Sprint service is deactivated
and I am unable to move it to
Verizon or any other provider.
Sprint offered me $170 for the
phone I just paid $600 for and
Verizon will sell me a new one,
with a 2 year service contract
commitment for only $290.
This is my current dilemma;
Im sure there are thousands of
people in a similar predicament. Sprint was dishonest
from the beginning, signing
me up with a promise of satisfaction guaranteed, making
up the answers to security
questions and passwords without my knowledge, not disclosing that the phone was

unable to be ported to anyone else, allowing me to cancel the service, but not the
phone and failing to refund
my money stating that I took
too long now to bring it to
their attention. They were dishonest not to reveal that the
Sprint dealers are independent contractors/retailers and
not actually affiliated with the
company and other Sprint
locations have nothing to do
with each other. I feel duped
and severely disappointed that
this kiosk independent retailer
will not step-up and rise to the
occasion and refund my
money for the phone enabling
me to take my business elsewhere.
I am devoting my financial column space today to let
my readers know that the
Sprint Satisfaction Guaranteed has a time limit of 14
days (this was never initially
discussed) and you should
think twice before purchasing
a phone and service from
them. May my $600 expense,
be a lesson to you and a warning to them, not to treat the
people in our community
unfairly, as a bad reputation
travels much faster than a
good one. Basically everyone
needs a cell phone today and
there are many choices in
which to secure one. Please
remember this true story when
considering which cell company or retailer to use.

hundred years in the making,

the focus of the celebration has
very clear source material. In
the pages of scripture, we see
what the events of the first
Christmas were and why we
still celebrate that night thousands of years later.
Most of us are aware of
the story of Christmas. The
baby Jesus is born in

Bethlehem to a young, newly

married Jewish couple - Joseph
and Mary. But this is no normal birth. Mary, a virgin, is
told by an angel that the baby
conceived in her is from the
Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:20).
This miracle happened to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14,
The virgin will be with child
and will give birth to a son,
and they will call him

Immanuel. The place of His

birth is no coincidence either.
The prophets were clear that
the promised Messiah would
be born in Bethlehem (Micah
5:2). Joseph and Mary, after a
trip to Egypt to escape the
anger of Herod, make their residence in Nazareth by the Sea
of Galilee - again, a fulfillment
of scripture (Isaiah 9:1-2).
So whats the big deal?
Apart from the miracle of a
virgin having a son, what is so
noteworthy to commemorate
Christmas over two thousand
years later? This is where the
scriptures come alive with verification for the joy that has
been celebrated all these years.
There is little debate over
the humanity of Jesus. Most
would agree that at the very
least, He was the worlds greatest teacher. We see in Him a

ty that is present in no other

person. As we look at Him in
the Gospels (Matthew, Mark,
Luke and John) it is difficult
not to walk away with a deep
sense that He was not just a
good man, but a perfect
human.
But scripture does not
leave us there. It goes on to
describe Jesus as not only a perfect human, but also as God.
This is where we stumble in
our modern times, but scripture is clear. In Colossians
1:19, we read, For God was
pleased to have all His fullness
dwell in Jesus. In Colossians
2:9 God tells us that In Jesus,
all the fullness of the Deity
lives in bodily form. Jesus was
not just a fully perfect human,
He was fully perfect God. This
is not just the writings of His
followers. Jesus claimed to be
God (John 10:30) and asserted

the attributes of God (Mark

2:5-12). Interestingly, this was
foretold in the scriptures in
Isaiah 9:6. Note in this familiar
verse that a child is born who
will be called Mighty God
and Everlasting Father. Both
these terms are used elsewhere
in Isaiah as a reference to God
(Isaiah 10:20-21 and 64:8). So,
in this verse we see God predicting through Isaiah that the

Messiah would be both God

and man.
But again, we are left with
the question, So what. If we
take the scriptures at face
value we can clearly see that
Jesus was both God and man.
What is the celebration all
about? In order to understand
that, we must go back to Job.

Questions and
answers about social
security benefits

heres a lot of talk

about social security
these days. For many
of us, social security payments
are a big part of retirement
planning. Here are answers to
a few basic questions on social
security.
Q. When can I start drawing
benefits?
A. You can start to draw your
standard benefit when you
reach your full retirement age.
Thats at age 65 if you were
born before 1938. Full retirement age increases progressively to age 67 if you were
born in later years. But you
can choose to receive a
reduced benefit any time after

you reach age 62. The earlier

you start, the bigger the
reduction. Or you can
increase the size of your
monthly payment by delaying
drawing benefits beyond your
retirement age.
Q. Will my benefits be taxed?
A. Whether youll have to
pay income tax on the social
security benefits you receive
depends on your other
income. If your provisional
income exceeds certain
thresholds, up to 50% of your
social security benefits could
be subject to tax. This can go
up to 85% at higher income
levels. Generally, provisional
income is your total income

working while receiving
social security?
A. If youve reached full
retirement age, you can keep
working without reducing
your benefits. But if youre
drawing benefits in the years
before full retirement age and
still working, your benefits
could be reduced. Generally,
youll lose $1 in benefits for

My big mouth helped me NOT get a job!

Picture this...

t took me awhile to figure

out that the new and
improved Joe wasnt a winning persona. When I was
around 23, I was a hotshot staff
accountant at the Witco
Chemical Corporation. My
aura at the time was that my
poop didnt stink. Other peoples might have, but not mine.
I decided to venture out
and look for a new job. A headhunter set up an interview for
me in a nearby town. I dont
remember the name of the
company, but I sure remember
the meeting.
My interviewer was a
young guy who immediately

made me feel very confident

and very comfortable. About
half way through the interview,
I planted my feet firmly on his
desk. We talked about women,
partying and all of my considerable conquests. When I left, he
gave me a slap on the back and
told me he looked forward to
seeing me soon.
I left feeling absolutely
positive that I had gotten the
job. When I arrived home,
there was already a message on
my machine. The call was from
my headhunter.
Her first message was this,
Joe, I just heard from the company and unfortunately, you

did not get the job. When I

heard those words, my heart
sank. The rejection didnt
make sense to me. I thought I
had connected with the interviewer on a spiritual level.
But the next words that
came out of her mouth
changed the way I looked at
myself. She said, Oh, by the
way, he has a message for you:
Grow up!
Think about it...
I realized too late that
during the interview, the interviewer was testing me. He
wanted to see how far I would
go. He opened the door, and I

just ran my mouth. What was

impressive to a 23 year-old
whose life was a mess was
VERY unimpressive in the real
world! Have you had a similar
testing? How did you do?
Perhaps some changes need to
be made in your life so that
when you feel comfortable in
an initial meeting, your true
self will be just the ticket.

The story of Chanukah

ts Chanukah and in Israel

and in many places around
the world Jews are lighting
candles in their window as
night falls. Theyre adding a
little light to the world and
reminding everyone of the miracles that happened to their
ancestors so long ago.
Over two thousand years
ago, the Jews of Israel were
ruled by the Greek conquerors
of Syria. Antiochus, the Greek
king, wanted all of his subjects
to live like Greeks so he made
laws forbidding Jews to practice
their religion by forbidding the
study of the Torah or keeping
the mitzvot. The Jews revolted
and had a whole army fighting
the Greeks. After many long
years, the Jews finally threw
the Greek army out of the
country. The first thing they
did as soon as they conquered
Jerusalem was to rededicate the

Temple (Chanukah means

dedication.) When they
tried to light the menorah, all
they could find was enough oil
to last them for one day. To
make more oil would have
taken at least a week eight
days more likely. A miracle
happened and the little jar of
oil burned for eight days.
Ever since then, Jews
have celebrated the victory
over the Greeks during the
holiday of Chanukah. On the
first night we light one candle,
on the second night we light
two candles, and so on. By the
eighth night we have eight
candles burning brightly,
reminding us of the eight days
that the oil burned in the
Temple and of the Jewish struggle against oppression.
Pirsumei nisa or publicizing the miracle is a very
important
custom
on

Chanukah. We light the candles in a window or by a door

facing the street so that every-

one passing by will see them

Hebrew words: Nes gadol
hayah sham (A great miracle

play dreidel is to spin it for
money. Everyone puts a coin
or gelt in the pot, then they
spin the dreidel to see who
wins: nun means nothing
you dont have to put in another coin and you dont get anything; gimel means you get
everything in the pot; heh
means you get half of what is in
the pot; and shin means you
have to put one into the pot.
In Israel, a dreidel is called a

for Nes gadol hayah poh (A

Best breeds for firsttime dog owners

eciding to get a dog

can be a life-altering
moment. While the
decision carries with it a
wealth of responsibility, a dog
can change a persons life for
the better, providing loyalty
and companionship for years
to come.
Once the decision to get
a dog has been made, prospective pet owners must choose a
breed. Various factors play
into this decision, including
how much space the dog will
have at home, the grooming
responsibilities that come
with a particular breed and the

some dog breeds that have a

propensity to be easy-going
and relatively easy to train.
Golden retriever: Golden
retrievers tend to be gregarious, docile and a good fit for
families. They are people-oriented, affectionate and loyal.
Golden retrievers are moderately-sized dogs that need
exercise to prevent boredom
(which can compel them to
cause damage around the
home). But golden retrievers
are generally a good fit for
first-time dog owners.
Labrador retriever: A
close cousin to the golden

typical demeanor of a given

breed. Because no two breeds
or owners are the same, some
dog-owner combinations may
make for a better pairing than
others.
Descriptions of breed
temperament can provide a
window into the general personality of certain dogs. But
such descriptions are not set in
stone, as each dog is unique
and may exhibit behaviors
extraordinary to its breed.
Factors such as socialization
and training play key roles in
how dogs will react in situations, and the following are

retriever, Labradors are another breed known for their good

nature and willingness to be
trained. Labs shed and can
grow large, so that is something
apartment-dwellers
must consider before bringing
home a Lab.
Standard poodle: Poodles
are an intelligent breed that
are easily trained. Poodles can
be high strung if not given
ample exercise, so this is
something prospective poodle
owners need to consider.

Zone 2, Page 13

Is There is a Difference Between

Spider Veins and Varicose Veins?

Spider veins and varicose

veins are different in appearance but similar in
their causes. With varicose veins, the valves located within the veins are
diseased and do not fully close to prevent
blood in the vein from flowing in the wrong
direction (called refluxing). This results in
bulging veins in the legs which are often blue
or purple in appearance. These varicose
veins can cause pain, numbness and fatigue
in the legs; and in more extreme cases can
cause painful leg ulcers.
We refer to spider veins as smaller discolored veins that have a spider web-like
appearance. These veins are generally not
painful, and are treated cosmetically.
As we age, the risk of developing varicose veins increases. Approximately 30
50% of adults suffer from the underlying
condition, known as chronic venous insufficiency, or CVI.
Approximately 80% of patients are
women and only 20% are men.
Contributing factors that put a person at
risk of developing varicose veins include:

A.

Heredity
Age
Standing profession
Being overweight or obese
Hormonal issues
What Causes Varicose and Spider
Veins to Appear
Non-functioning valves within a blood
vessel cause varicose veins. Veins return
blood back to the heart, but when a valve
does not function properly, it causes blood
to flow backwards into the vein. This is
called venous insufficiency and this backward flow causes vein enlargement. Spider
veins can develop for the same reason, but
are further influenced by obesity, heredity,
pregnancy and menopause.
Signs of Vein Problems
The symptoms are similar for varicose
and spider veins, but are typically more severe for varicose veins. Spider veins may
cause minor burning or itching at the site.
Varicose vein symptoms include leg aches
or cramps, a feeling of leg heaviness, burning, throbbing or tingling. Skin ulcers, especially in the ankle area, are not uncommon
when varicose veins are particularly severe.

Now is the time to get

ready for Fall Fun.

Fall foliage; visit an apple
orchard; hike the

All these great Fall

tioned and smaller dog that is

typically affectionate, happy
and outgoing. Typically eager
to please and intelligent
enough for obedience training, the cavalier is naturally
well-behaved and can get
along well with other pets.
Boston terrier: The
Boston terrier, also known as
the Boston Bull, is a compact brute of a dog.
Although small in size, the
Boston terrier does not lack
for personality and tends to
be playful and friendly with a
willingness to learn. Bostons
do require a firm human
leader; otherwise, they may
believe they run the show.
These breeds are offered
as examples of good breeds
for first-time dog owners.
However, there are plenty of
other breeds out there that
would make ideal pets, even

for the novice dog owner.

Socialization, training and
exercise are essential to
shaping a dog into a trusted
and happy member of the
family.

What is Christmas really?

continued from page 7

ence to his relationship with

God, If only there were someone to arbitrate between us, to
lay his hand upon us both,
someone to remove Gods rod
from me, so that His terror
would frighten me no more.
Then I would speak up without
fear of Him, but as it now
stands with me, I cannot.
Scripture teaches that our
imperfections separate us from
a perfect God so that we are all
in Jobs dilemma - a desire to
be in relationship with God
but with no basis for that relationship. That may seem
appalling to many but we are
comforted that God is also
appalled by our circumstances.
In Isaiah 59:16, God says that
He saw that there was no one,

He was appalled that there was

no one to intervene; so His
own arm worked salvation for
Him and His own righteousness sustained Him. God was
not satisfied in leaving us in a
hopeless relationship. So He
took on humanity in the person of Jesus. On that first
Christmas day in a manger, the
desire of Job was finally realized. Jesus, who could represent humans (because He was
fully human) and God
(because He was fully God),
was born to become the perfect
mediator. He lived the perfect
life that we cannot live and He
took on the punishment that
we deserved (we celebrate that
on Good Friday). It is through
Jesus that we can receive
righteousness (or a right

standing) before God.

How does that happen?
The same way that Abraham
received righteousness. Genesis 15:6 says that Abraham
believed and it was credited to
him as righteousness. There
is nothing we can do that
causes God to owe us the
righteousness from Jesus.
Instead, we have to trust in
Jesus - believe He is who He
said He is and that what He
did is sufficient to cover our
imperfections. We are then
able to be in relationship with
God - and not just for today
but for eternity.
Thats good news!!
Thats worth celebrating!!
Thats what Christmas is really all about!!

around 1 almond half. Place
1-inch apart onto ungreased
cookie sheets. Bake 13-15
minutes or until set. Cool 1
minute on cookie sheet;
remove to cooling rack. Cool
completely.

Place candy coating

and shortening into
bowl. Microwave 1
minute; stir. Continue
microwaving, stirring
every 15 seconds, until
mixture is melted and
smooth.
Place jimmies in
shallow bowl. Dip
each cookie in coating (do not coat bottom); immediately
dip top into jimmies. Let
stand until coating is set.
Helpful hints:
Use a mini food processor to finely chop almonds.
Substitute 1 cup white baking
chips for candy coating.
