DESIGN STATEMENT
My passion and curiosity for the field of graphic design is a continuous journey.
I am constantly seeking to gain more knowledge from professors, peers, and
publications. After completing my first graphic design course, I fell in love with the
process and art of graphic design. Using the software came as second nature to
me, furthermore sparking my interest in the field. As I continued my education, I
explored different routes in the field and found my niche in page layout and design.
This occurred after joining my high schools newspaper.
Art for me is not a career or a hobby, but a passion and way of life. Everyone views
the world differently, but when I look around my mind buzzes with ideas about my
material surroundings, especially when it comes to exceptional typography and
easily communicated design. I find that I am most inspired by fashion magazines
such as Vouge and Elle. The collection of visuals mixed with typography in these
publications helps me gain knowledge and ideas to form my own grid structures
and visual interactions.
Along with constant research in current publications, I also seek inspiration from
famous publication artists like Alexey Brodovitch and Cipe Peneles. Alexey
Brodovitch created dynamic layouts for Bazaar magazine for 24 years. In his
layouts he combined cropped photographs and typography, which created a bold
and striking designs. His signature use of whitespace and innovative outlook on
design has influenced my creation process and ideas. Additionally, Cipe Peneles is
considered one of the most important and ground-breaking publication designers
of the 20th Century. She was the first female art director of fashion magazines
including Vogue, Vanity Fair, Seventeen, Glamour, and Charm. She paved the
way for women entering the design industry and helped define the style and
qualities that make up editorial design. Cipe Peneles is one of my role models; her
determination, passion, and style are all something I try to inherit in my own designs.
My initial research starts from collecting materials that already exist on the market.
I then dissect what does and does not make them successful. This helps me
collaborate ideas for my own designs. I learn from the mistakes of failures and take
successful designs and use them for guidance. I have folders upon folders collected
on my computer of images and examples that galvanize my design eye. I use these
examples as references to form my own ideas when creating something new.
My goal as a designer is to communicate messages clearly while still remaining
visually active. I do this by incorporating experimental typography and active
photography, while still following a simple underlying structure. This helps
communicate the message clearly while still keeping the reader engaged. My
endeavor to be a successful editorial designer is a continual exploration. Passion,
curiosity, and inspiration are what guide my efforts into succeeding in the field.
Design trends are always changing, but that is why I love the field. I am always eager
to learn, explore, and dissect new ideas.
