First of all I would like to extend my gratitude & thanks to almighty and for his blessing
without which this project could not have reached completion.Also to our Dean Prof.
Allosious Edward for extending all help for doing the project. I express my thanks to faculty
guide Prof.A.M.Tatti for the encouragement, co-operation and guidance.I am extremely
thankful to PHILLIPS CARBON BLACK LTD, Karimugal for permitting me to complete the
project within their premises. I thank Mr. Eric Johnson (manager HRD) for providing the

Executive Summary

The organization study was done at Phillips Carbon Black Limited, Karimugal Cochin.
The main objective of the study was to study the organizational structure of the company. This
company was selected for study due to the high brand image and fame of its products. The study
consisted of getting familiarized with the structure of the different departments as well as their
functions. It has mainly nine departments namely, Accounting and finance department, purchase
and stores department, production department, Engineering department, Human resource and
administration department, Research and development department, Central Excise and oil
department, Captive Power plant department, and logistics department. The time allotted for
conducting the study was 4 weeks. The data was mainly collected by direct interview with the
department heads as well as with the workers in the company. The company manuals, annual
reports were also referred for the same purpose .The company is having a formal organization
structure. The availability of raw material in plenty, brand image of its products, etc. is the
strength of the company. The company deals with mainly tyre products and so the production
will be continuous. Unnecessary political interference is its main weakness. Since the usage of
the tyre and its related product is becoming high, there is a great opportunity to grow much more
for the company. But the sudden price variations in raw materials are serious threats to the
company.
