1.02.03 Wind Speed and Direction

According to the work Wind Load Characteristics in Libya (2010) by Prof. Milad M. Alshebani
(the Department of Civil Engineering Alfateh University, Zliten) and Mohammed B. Abohedma
(postgraduate of Civil Engineering Department, Alfateh University, Zliten), Libya is affected by
atmospheric depressions during the winter time and north-eastern trade winds in the summer. Libya is
also exposed to Ghibli " winds, a dry and hot wind that blows from the south several times per year,
usually from late spring throughout summer season.
Over the course of the year, typical wind speed varies from 0 m/s to 8 m/s (calm to fresh breeze),
rarely exceeding 12 m/s (strong breeze). The highest average wind speed of 5m/s (gentle breeze) occurs
around May 30. At that time, the average daily maximum wind speed is 8 m/s (fresh breeze).
The lowest average wind speed of 3 m/s (light breeze) occurs around first week of December. At that
time the average daily maximum wind speed is 6 m/s (moderate breeze).
In Libya, measurement of the wind speed is based on 10-sec gusts wind speed. The most frequent
wind speed is 15 m/s. After examining wind speeds and its frequent durations, it has been envisioned that
Libya can be classified into four wind speed zones in ascending order of its annual maxima wind speed.
According to this classification, Tripoli is placed at Zone 4, with the design wind speed of 121 km/h (33.6
m/s), a return period of 50 years.

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION REPORT

Figure 1 The design wind speed contour map of Libya with a 50- year

In conclusion, a basic wind speed of 121 km/h (33.6 m/s) is assumed for the design.
Wind load is the major load for secondary structural elements such as parapets, fences etc.
1.03 Geological constraints
1.03.01 Subsoil Condition
The Geotechnical investigation was not carried out up to the time of design process. For
structural analyse is assumed that the ground is consisted from most common type of soil, silty sand and
sand silt mixtures in very loose to very dense state of compaction, non-plastic. This is classified as (SM)
1.03.02 Bearing Capacity Estimation
The allowable bearing capacity is assumed as max. 150 KN/m2. In the case, after the excavation
for the foundations is done, or if the geotechnical investigation is carried out in the meantime, that soil
properties significantly differ, the contractor should consult geotechnical engineer and structural
designer before construction of the foundations continue.
1.03.03 Chemical analysis and corrosion control
For safety reasons is assumed that the total sulphate, chloride and organic concentrations in soil is
not in the allowed level so corrosion is expected and safety precautions are required.

1.04 Seismic constraints

1.04.01 Codes and Standards
For Design Eurocode 8 Design of structures for earthquake resistance (BS EN 1998-1:2004) will be
used.
1.04.02 Determination of the seismic hazard
The seismic hazard depends of design ground displacement, ag (m/s) which is derived from ground
peak acceleration (ag40hz = 03,0 m/s
The following map shows the estimated horizontal peak ground acceleration:

Horizontal Peak Ground Acceleration seismic hazard map representing stiff site conditions for an
exceedance or occurrence rate of 10% within 50 years for the Mediterranean region (source: GSHAP GLOBAL SEISMIC HAZARD ASSESSMENT PROGRAM)
From the map above: ag40hz = 1,00 m/s.
The design ground acceleration on type A ground is calculated from equitation:
ag = 0.8 ag40hz1
1 - importance factor, for ordinary buildings is 1 = 1.
ag = 0.8 ag40hz1 = 0.81.01.0 = 0.80
Calculations the ratio, ag/g = 0.80/9.81 = 0.08. These values show that Tripoli is in low seismic hazard.
Taking in account that Alarbi villa is low rise building with only 2 stories, seismic load will not be included in
calculation.

1.05 Super Structure

For basement, structural system is reinforced concrete walls with one-way, ribbed slab, 250 mm
thick.
Above the basement, the basic structural system is Confined Masonry Construction. Confined
masonry construction consists of masonry walls and horizontal and vertical reinforced concrete (RC)
confining elements built on all four sides of a masonry wall panel: vertical elements, called tie-columns or
vertical ties, and horizontal elements, called tie-beams or horizontal ties. It is important that these RC
members should be built after the masonry wall has been completed. Confined masonry walls are loadbearing, transmit the gravity load from the slab(s) above down to the strip foundations (along with the
RC tie-columns). Strip RC foundations with RC plinth beam will transmit the load from the walls down to
the foundation. It also protects the ground floor walls from excessive settlement in soft soil conditions and
the moisture penetration into the building.
Tie-columns should be provided at the following locations:
At the free edges of each structural wall element,
At both sides of any wall opening with an area of more than 1.5 m,
Within the wall if necessary in order not to exceed a spacing of 5 m,
At the intersections of structural walls, wherever the confining elements
imposed by the above rules are at a distance larger than 1,5 m.
Tie-columns have dimensions of section equal to thickness of the walls i.e. 200x200 mm.
Tie-beams should be located at every floor level and in any case with a vertical spacing not more than 4
m.
For basic masonry unit is hollow concrete blocks 200 mm thick adopted. Minimum compressive strength
for a masonry unit based on the gross area, fp = 7.5 MPa.
Mortar is on situ made mortar combined of cement, sand and lime. Compressive strength Class: M5,
Nominal compressive strength fj = 5 MPa.
Mortar mix proportions: Cement : lime : sand = 1:1:(not less than 2.25, not more than 3 time of cementitius
materials in volume).
Lime should be non-hydraulic to BS EN 459-1. Sand should conform to the requirements of BS EN 13139
and ideally be clean sand now known as fine aggregate. Cements should conform to BS EN 197-1.
To provide good bonding between a masonry wall and adjacent RC tie-columns and for delaying
undesirable cracking and separation at the wall-to-tie-column interface, it should be achieved by
toothing at the wall-to-tie-column interface. Toothed edges should be left on each side of the wall at the
interface with the tie-columns. Toothing length should be equal to one-quarter of the masonry unit
length, but not less than 50 mm1.

1.05.01 Reinforcement Requirements for tie beams

Longitudinal Reinforcement (Tie-beams and Tie-columns):
Minimum 4 reinforcing bars
Bar sizes:
- deformed reinforcing bars of minimum 10-mm diameter (metric sizes) or
- smooth reinforcing bars of 12 mm diameter (when deformed bars are not available).
To ensure the effectiveness of tie-beams in resisting earthquake loads, longitudinal bars should
have a 90 hooked anchorage at intersections, as shown in Figure bellow:

Allabina/+381 Design

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION REPORT

1.05.02 The size and spacing

Size: minimum 6 mm diameter bars should be used (either smooth or deformed steel bars) with 135
hooked ends (staggered); note that db denotes tie diameter in Figure 50 a.
Tie spacing (s) should not exceed 200 mm - this applies to RC tie-columns and tie-beams
- For regions of high and very high seismicity, reduced tie spacing (s/2) is required at
the ends of tie-columns, as shown in Figure bellow. The length over which the reduced
tie spacing is used should not exceed the larger of the following two values:
- 2b, where b is the tie-column dimension, or
- ho/6, where ho is the tie-column clear height.
- For regions of moderate seismicity, a uniform tie spacing (s) of 200 mm should be
used throughout - it is not required to reduce tie-spacing at the tie-column ends.
Minimum concrete cover to ties is 20 mm.

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION REPORT

1.05.03 Slabs and beams

The slabs are ribbed, 250 mm thick, made of hollow blocks (200x450x250 mm), reinforce concrete ribs,
100 mm wide, placed at 500 mm spacing and reinforced concrete slab, 50 mm thick.
Under the partition walls reinforce concrete beams are designed.
For in-situ cast reinforced concrete quality should have fc=30 MPa (C 25/30 according to EN 206) or
better. Reinforcement ribbed steel should have yield strength fyk=360 MPa or better.
The roof is flat and it is not accessible except for normal maintenance and repair.
1.06 Sub Structure
The basement foundations are based at level -3.6 m bellow the ground floor. For reinforcedconcrete basement raft foundation is adopted. Strip foundations with RC plinth beam are adopted for
structural masonry walls.
1.07 Structural Design
Calculation of structure forces was carried out by advances structural software1 in order to
determine real behaviour of structure under the all possible combinations of applied loads. Deflections of
the structure were calculated taking into consideration creep and shrinkage of concrete during the time
of structure exploitation.
Structure resistance to lateral loads is achieved by stiffness of the structural masonry walls in two
orthogonal directions.

1.07.04 Calculation of the of required masonry walls density

Wall density is a key indicator of safety for low-rise confined masonry buildings subjected to
seismic and gravity loads. Evidence from past earthquakes shows that confined masonry buildings with
adequate wall density were able to resist the effects of major earthquakes without collapse.
The wall density is quantified through the wall density index, d, which is equal to:
d = AW/AP
where:
AP is area of the building floor plan, and AW is equal to the cross-sectional area of all walls in one
direction, that is, a product of the wall length and thickness when performing the AW calculations. It is not
necessary to deduct the area of tie-columns and the area of voids in hollow masonry units for the AW
calculations.
It is very important to note that the wall cross-sectional area should not be included in the AW calculation
in the following cases:
a) walls with openings, in which the area of an unconfined opening is greater than 10% of the
wall surface area unless the opening is confined with ties and
b) walls characterized by the height-to-length ratio greater than 1.5.
The d value should be determined for both directions of the building plan (longitudinal and transverse).
Ground floor: total area, AP = 315 m2
For following properties:
1) low seismic hazard (ag/g = 0.08g),
2) soft soil conditions,
3) 2 stories building high and
4) concrete hollow blocks,
the required Density index is 1.5% maximum.
Calculation:
Calculation of the effective height of a wall:
hef = nh
(h is the clear storey height of the wall, n is a reduction factor)
n = 0.75;
h = 3.90 - 0.25 = 3.65 m
hef = 0.75 3.65 = 2.7375 m
