AIR POLLUTION

One of the formal definitions of air pollution is as follows The presence in the
atmosphere of one or more contaminants in such quality and for such duration as is injurious,
or tends to be injurious, to human health or welfare, animal or plant life. It is the
contamination of air by the discharge of harmful substances. Air pollution can cause health
problems and it can also damage the environment and property. It has caused thinning of
the protective ozone layer of the atmosphere, which is leading to climate change.
Modernization and progress have led to air getting more and more polluted over the years.
Industries, vehicles, increase in the population, and urbanization are some of the major
factors responsible for air pollution. The following industries are among those that emit a great
deal of pollutants into the air: thermal power plants, cement, steel, refineries, petrochemicals, and mines. Air pollution results from a variety of causes, not all of which are within
human control. Dust storms in desert areas and smoke from forest fires and grass fires
contribute to chemical and particulate pollution of the air.
Air Pollution
One of the most serious problems that we have is the air pollution we breathe. People can
help to improve the air we breathe. In order to improve the quality of the air, we have to be
more conscious about what causes this kind of pollution and the effects of it. The air pollution
causes harm and discomfort to humans or other living organisms and also damages our
natural environment. The saddest situation is to realize that the main causes of deterioration
of our lives are caused by us. Here is the most important cause of air pollution and the effect
in our quality of life.
The industry and transportation are the two main sources of air pollution. The main pollutants
given off by motor vehicles which affect our health are: carbon monoxide, which is
generated by vehicles that use gasoline. The hydrocarbons are formed by other petroleum
products. Nitrogen oxides are not a real problem, but on contact with sunlight, they produce
toxic compounds that will kill us. Excessive car use and their poor condition contribute to this
pollution. Everybody has to pass the annual inspection in order to keep their cars in a good
condition and in consequence helps to care our environment. These substances include
various gases and tiny particles that may be harmful to human health and the environment.
The greenhouse effect keeps a portion of the heat received from the sun which leave the
atmosphere and go back into space. If you are at ground level, the ultraviolet rays from the
sun become a very powerful pollutant, in other words it makes damage not only to humans
but also plants and animals are affected, too. Increases in air pollution have been linked to
breakdowns in lung function and increases in heart attacks. The most vulnerable people that
are harmed are people with asthma and other lung or heart disease because their problems
will increase faster than other kind of problem.

Generally these gases come from factories but also there are dangerous materials in our
houses. In order to keep ourselves from the possible effects of pollution we have to take
precautions towards air pollution.
We can control ourselves and we should act carefully. So, for example, we should use public
transportation, avoid spray cans. Besides, people mostly be careful regarding trees as they
are sources of oxygen. Due to its importance we should keep them clean.

Environment and also air are so significant for all living beings. So people should take into
account this issue and they should do whatever they can to keep our environment clean.
