TEST METHOD FOR DETERMINING COMPRESSIBILITY AND

RECOVERY OF GASKET MATERIALS

EDS-T-7665
PAGE: 1/3

1. SCOPE
This standard is used to determine of the short-time compressibility and recovery at room temperature of gasket
materials.

2. TEST PIECES AND NUMBER OF TEST PIECES

2.1. The test piece having a minimum area of 6.5cm3 in the form of a square shall be cut from the material, except
in the case of cork composition and cellular rubber materials, which shall have a test piece in the form of a circle
6.5cm3 in area. The test piece shall consist of a single ply or a number of superimposed plies sufficient to give a
minimum nominal thickness of 1.6mm for all materials except cork composition, cork and rubber materials, and
cork and cellular rubber materials for which the minimum nominal thickness shall be 3.2mm.
2.2. For initial sample approval and for arbitration purposes at least 3 test pieces, and for routine quality control at
least 1 test piece shall be tested.

3. CONDITIONING
Test pieces shall be conditioned as specified in the drawing or material specifications for the particular type of
material, and according to Table 1 for the general type of material.

4. APPARATUS
4.1. Compression testing device
Tensile tester, capable of measuring the compression force by an appropriate compression test pack and
consisting of the following components.
4.1.1. Anvil having a diameter of 31.7mm or more.
4.1.2. Penetrator, a steel cylinder type: Refer to Table 1.
4.1.3. Dial graduated in 0.025mm.
4.2. Cutter or scissors

5. PROCEDURE
The test shall be performed at a temperature of +21 to +30.
5.1. Center the test piece upon the anvil and apply the preload (refer to Table 1) and maintain for a period of 15s,
and record the preloaded thickness of the test piece.
5.2. Immediately apply the major load in a slow uniform manner so that the total load (preload + major load) is
attained within 10s.

5.3. Maintain the total load for a period of 60 seconds, and record the thickness of the test piece.
5.4. Immediately remove the major load, and after a period of 60 seconds record the thickness of the test piece.

6. EVALUATION
6.1. The compressibility and recovery shall be calculated as follows.
Compressibility(%) = [(P-M)/P] 100
Recovery(%) = [(R-M)/(P-M)] 100
Where, P = Thickness under preload (mm)
M = Thickness under total load (mm)
R = Recovery thickness (mm)

7. EXPRESSION OF RESULTS
The measured compressibility (recovery) shall be expressed in % by an arithmetic mean and indicated to the
nearest 0.1%.

8. CODING SYSTEM
The compressibility (recovery) shall be indicated on the drawing or material specifications as follows.

9. DEVIATION
Deviation from requirements of this standard (e.g. test load applying, etc.) shall be agreed upon in advance and
shall be specified on the drawings or material specifications, and reported in test certificates or reports, etc.
