Snow on Thanksgiving, Glencoe, 2014

Tomorrow, December 2, is "Giving Tuesday" when we are encouraged to

remember and donate to organizations with missions we admire. Following on
the heels of Thanksgiving, this remembrance is especially fitting here on the
North Shore, where we have much to be thankful for.
In that spirit of Thanksgiving, Go Green Glencoe would like to salute a few
community organizations that make Glencoe a greener place. Most are

volunteer-driven, and some never ask us for a dollar. These include groups
which recycle the things we throw away; public institutions striving for energy
efficiency; and gardeners planting and restoring landscapes. Please join us in
giving these groups and their volunteers a big "Thank you."

Friends of the Glencoe Public Library

The Friends of the Library have been recycling and
recirculating books in Glencoe for 52 years. Donations of
gently used books are accepted at the library every day,
and a dedicated corps of volunteers sort donations twice a
week throughout the year to prepare for three annual book
sales. The group sells an estimated 30,000 books each
year, redirecting tons of solid waste from the landfill. The
sales yield $25,000 - $30,000 for Library programs. If you'd
like to volunteer or donate to the Friends, call (847)
835-7467.

Glencoe Residents Who Recycle at Home

Why not congratulate ourselves? Every house in town has a green
recycling bin, thanks to the Village's recycling partnership
with Groot Industries and the Solid Waste Agency of
Northern Cook County (SWANCC). During the last full
"garbage accounting" year, Glencoe residents recycled
1,727 tons of household materials. Glencoe Village received
$6,900 in recycling rebates during the year, and saved
$100,321 in landfill fees because of our recycling efforts.
The more we put in that green tote, the more money saved.

generated 2,000 pounds of garbage to landfill last year.

Glencoe Friends of the Green Bay Trail

The Friends of the Green Bay Trail started in 2010 as a
small project to remove buckthorn and other invasives from a
portion of Glencoe's bike path south of Harbor Ave. Since then
the project area has been replanted with more than 150 trees
and shrubs and volunteers have propagated and planted 15,000 seeds to
restore the native landscape. The award-winning project depends on
volunteers to continue its work. For more information, or to volunteer, go
to gbtrail.org

The Glencoe Community Garden

The Glencoe Community Garden started three years ago as a mitzvah
project of Am Shalom and now incorporates families and volunteers from
throughout the village. What started as an empty railroad

siding where excess snow was dumped each winter has

become a beautiful 5,000-square ft oasis next to Phil Tomas
Park. This mini-farm has produced more than 6,000
pounds of fresh organic produce since 2012 -- all of it
donated to social service organizations in the Chicago area.
With a mission that includes raising environmental awareness, the Garden
uses drip irrigation and solar panels in addition to maintaining a hot
composting system, creating a "closed" organic loop. GCG provides
educational programming through partnerships with the Glencoe Library and
the Park District, and is actively seeking volunteers. Visit GCG here.

Go Green Glencoe
Founded in Spring, 2013, Go Green Glencoe seeks to raise awareness
of environmental issues and opportunities in our community. This year's focus
has been on recycling. On November 16th we held a "Recycle your Bicycle"
bike drop off event at the Park District's Takiff Center. Over the course of three
hours more than 60 bikes were collected and donated to Working Bikes. We
thank everyone who turned out on a chilly day to donate their bikes to a worthy
cause. Want to get involved? E-mail us at GoGreenGlencoe@gmail.com.

The North Shore Exchange and Women's Library Club

The North Shore Exchange, a division of the Women's Library Club of
Glencoe, was founded in March, 2013 to
merchandise and re-sell gently used,
beautifully curated luxury items to North
Shore customers.The shop accepts
homegoods, clothing and accessories for
consignment. In its first 18 months of operation, the Exchange generated
$255,000 in profits for educational and women's and children's causes. For
more information, to volunteer, or see selected merchandise, click here.

Glencoe District 35 Central School

Over two summers in 2013 and 2014, our elementary school district
installed a geo-thermal heating and cooling system at Central School. Early
energy-savings results are in, and the school reports that this October, heating
costs for the building were reduced by two thirds over October, 2012. The
project will also reduce cooling costs in warmer weather. Portions of the
project were funded by an Illinois Clean Air grant.

St. Elisabeth's Church

In June of 2012, Glencoe's St. Elisabeth's Episcopal Church at 556
Vernon Avenue installed 30 rooftop solar panels as an investment in the future
in our community. Since then, the panels have generated 21.5 megawatts of
electricity --enough to power a full-size refrigerator for 13 years. For more data
on this solar power project, click here.

Environmental Movie and Speaker Series Coming in 2015

Go Green Glencoe and the Glencoe Library are presenting a movie and
speaker series early next year. Please save the dates:
On February 10 we will be showing Queen of the Sun, a profound and
alternative look at the global bee crisis. Our speaker
for that night will be Jessica Reyes, beekeeper and
naturalist for the Heller Nature Center.
On March 10, we are excited to have Jennifer Spitz,
the producer of Food Patriots, present her movie to
us. Food Patriots was
reviewed as the "Food
movie for everyone"
and inspires the
audience to make a
change in the way they buy, eat, and talk
about food.
On April 14, in conjunction with Earth Day, we will
be viewing the award winning documentary, Bag-It.
The movie follows "everyman" Jeb Berrier as he
navigates our plastic world and what he discovers is
shocking. We are very lucky to have one of the
editors, Suz Remec introduce the movie.
All movies will be shown from 7 - 9 PM at the Glencoe
Library. There will be a question and answer period at
the end of each movie.
Stay tuned for more information!
