Abstract
Numerical simulations have been carried out on the solar chimney power plant systems coupled with turbine. The whole system has
been divided into three regions: the collector, the chimney and the turbine, and the mathematical models of heat transfer and ow have
been set up for these regions. Using the Spanish prototype as a practical example, numerical simulation results for the prototype with a 3blade turbine show that the maximum power output of the system is a little higher than 50 kW. Furthermore, the effect of the turbine
rotational speed on the chimney outlet parameters has been analyzed which shows the validity of the numerical method advanced by the
author. Thereafter, design and simulation of a MW-graded solar chimney power plant system with a 5-blade turbine have been
presented, and the numerical simulation results show that the power output and turbine efciency are 10 MW and 50%, respectively,
which presents a reference to the design of large-scale solar chimney power plant systems.

1. Introduction
The solar chimney power plant system, which consists of
four major componentsthe collector, the chimney, the
turbine and the energy storage layerwas rst proposed in
the late 1970s by Professor Jorg Schlaich and tested with a
prototype model in Manzanares, Spain in the early 1980s
[1]. Air underneath the low circular transparent glass or
lm canopy open at the circumference is heated by
radiation from the sun. The canopy and the surface of
the energy storage layer below form an energy collection
system, called the collector. The chimney, a vertical tower
tube with large air inlets at its base, stands in the center of
the collector. The joint between the collector and the
chimney is airtight. The wind turbine is installed at the
bottom of the chimney where there is large pressure
difference from the outside. For the large-scale solar
chimney systems, there may be several wind turbines inside
as it is difcult, at the current time, to produce wind

3.1. In the collector and chimney regions
Some assumptions should be taken into account to
simplify the problem to get the performance of the solar
chimney power plant system under load condition. The
whole system should be divided into three regions: the
collector, the turbine, and the chimney. For the collector
and chimney regions, a conventional method of numerical
simulation could be used to give reasonable results, while

7. Conclusions
A numerical simulation method for the solar chimney
power plant system including turbine is presented in this
paper. The results for the Spanish prototype with a 3-blade
turbine show that, with the increase in the turbine
rotational speed, the average velocity of the chimney outlet
and the system mass ow rate decrease, the average
temperature of the chimney outlet and the turbine pressure
drop inversely, while the maximum available energy, power
output and efciency of the turbine each has a peak value.
The numerical simulation for the MW-grade solar
chimney power plant system has been carried out to give
a reference for the design of large-scale solar chimney
power plant systems. For a solar chimney with a chimney
400 m in height and 30 m in radius, collector 1500 m in
radius and a 5-blade turbine designed in this paper, the
maximum power output and turbine efciency is about
10 MW and 50%, respectively.
