Event Ad

Description: An event ad for a local art museum, advertising

their new opening exhibition
Date: 10/11/14
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 5
Joel Judkins
Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word
Objective:
Create an attractive event ad design while using the limited
resources in Microsoft Word.
Process: I started with a few sketches, and list of ideas that I
could use to work with the photo I had available to me. I then
used Photoshop, and a scanner to scan an image at high
quality, and used the program to adjust the images overall
size and resolution. Then after sizing it appropriately I inserted
it into Microsoft Word and created text boxes with descriptive
text in places that would work well. I then unified the piece
by adding a red logo that repeats in the small mans shirt. I
simplified the design by eliminating the use of too many fonts,
and stuck to one with varying sizes. I made sure that the flow
was simple, and easy to read. I printed it off at first and the
text was way to close to the edge, so I re-adjusted the
margins as well as the placement of the text and printed it out
again. I also used a paper cutter in the copy spot in the
Manwaring Center to trim my ad to a full bleed photo. I believe
that using the skills I received in the first printout helped me
better create a great ad the second time.

Brochure

Description: A simple and professional brochure for an Art

Museum
Date: 12/6/14
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 5
Joel Judkins
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign
Objective:
Create an attractive brochure for a company of my imagination
with the basic tools of InDesign and Illustrator
Process: I began by making some sketches of what I wanted
the brochure to be. I then sketched out a new logo for the
museum and used Adobe Illustrator instead of Word to create it.
I then created a layout with a piece of paper to get exactly what
I wanted. I then searched for images, and wrote my body copy.
After that I made a file for Adobe InDesign so that I could start
to create the brochure. After the measurements were changed
to inches I could then set guides to the areas I needed. I then
placed all the images in that I needed as well as my logo and
then created the design. I used text wrapping on two of the
images to make use of space, and I also used paragraph styles
to add a bold to my sub-headings. I also used boxes with no
fill to add borders around the images so that the color scheme
could be used. Finally, I printed it out, and printed it out, and
printed it out, again, and again, tweaking the document every
time until it was just right.

Logos

Description: A few logo designs that I wanted to create for a

future business my brother and I hope to create one day.
Date: 11/1/14
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 5
Joel Judkins
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Objective:
Create three different logos for a company of my imagination
using the basic tools in Illustrator
Process: For this project I started with a lot of sketches. I
knew I wanted some thing clean, simple, and very classy. After
sketching i then went to Dafonts.com to pick out a few fonts that
worked well with the message and audience. I then used
Adobe Illustrator to create my logos. For the top logo I started
with drawing an ellipse and using the type along path tool to
type along an arc. I then added the smaller text to describet the
comapny further. For the middle logo I used the pen tool to
create the shape of the hair. After that I used a larger font with
color corresponding to the scheme I chose. Then I added
smaller different text at the bottom to describe the company,
and then I used the subtraction tool to make the middle
separation shape between the two words apparel and
barbershop. For the last logo i found a picture of a straight razor
and used image tracing to get easier lines to follow. Then using
the pen tool I traced it out and grouped it all together. I made
paths with the pen tool and added both the title and body copy.

color scheme I then placed the logo into Adobe InDesign and
used that to layout exactly what I wanted. After laying e
verything out and listening to the feedback from my critiques I
went and tweaked everything just right.

Montage

Description: An inspirational message from my favorite motivational speaker Leslie Brown

Date: 10/25/14
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 5
Joel Judkins
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Objective:
Pair an inspirational quote with 2 images blended together
Process: I first used a few sketches, and researched a few
quotes to get the general message I wanted to send. I then
refined the sketches to get something I really wanted. After
looking through the free image websites I found some photos
that would work and adjusted my design and color scheme
accordingly. I then opened the photos in Photoshop, and
began to crop out what I did not want in the blurred photo. I
used a mask to better get softer edges, then turned the
opacity down, and applied the Gaussian Blur filter to further
blend it in. I then flipped the image so that it better matched
the flow of the trees and added a factor of Gestalt to make
it work together. I then added the text I saw appropriate and
used a simple sans serif throughout. I then finished the
design by adjusting things so that they were easier to see and
worked in their individual placement.

Event Flier

Description: A flier for the company

Vouant Communications advertising and explaining their
leadership conference.
Date: 10/4/14
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 5
Joel Judkins
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Objective:
Create an attractive black and white event flier using basic
tools in InDesign
Process: I started by creating sketches that made the most
sense. I knew that I wanted to communicate effectively, and in
an attractive layout. I wanted it to be easily read, and
understandable. I use adobe InDesign to format and create
this design, I made sure the title had contrast to communicate
that it was a graduate only conference, and contrasted the
body copy by bolding the most important details of the event.
I tried to keep the focal point on the paper by adding certain
elements so that your eye went with the flow of the design.

WebPage

Description: Webpage showcasing my logo for the Tanner

Brothers barber and apparel shop.
Date: 11/12/14
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 5
Joel Judkins
Program(s)/Tools:
TextWrangler
Adobe Illustrator
Objective:
Create an appealing webpage to display my favorite logo,
using basic HTML5 coding
Process: I first used the html that was given to me and
modified it and indented it for ease of reading. When
modifying it I created an HREF for the link to my blog, as well
as an IMG-SRC so that my logo would appear on the
webpage. I then used the plain text document given to me
and converted it into a CSS file, and linked the html to it using
another HREF. In the CSS document I then changed all of the
fonts to Helvetica and added two web safe fonts incase the
person viewing doe not have that particular font. After which
I then changed the thickness of the border and centered the
image using margins. I then used Photoshop to find the HEX
colors of my logo and then used them throughout the
webpage to create gestalt. After my critiques I went into
Illustrator and used the rectangle tool to create a pattern that
resembled a barber pole and added a URL link in the CSS to
create a repeating background image to add an eye-catching
element and relate to the webpage overall.

Description: A witty quotation with a great picture of a bear

Date: 10/11/14
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 5
Joel Judkins
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photshop
Objective:
Shoot a color schemed photo and use the basic tools in
Photoshop to create swatches and an interesting design
Process: I first started by sketching things out, and figuring
which color scheme I liked the most. I decided since it was
early fall and the trees just started to change the best scheme
would include gold. I then picked a place to shoot and used a
DSLR camera to take a focused photo. Preceding that I used
my skills in Photoshop to tweak levels and make the shades
of color exactly the way I wanted them to look. I then added
the color swatches and a repeating shape as a design
element.

Description: A simple and stylish t-shirt for Tanner brothers

Barber shop
Date: 12/12/14
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 5
Joel Judkins
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Objective:
Create an a simple t shirt design for a company using
elements of their logo to make a nice design
Process: I started with a few sketches of tshirts, and looked
at different designs I liked. I then decided to go with a front
pocketted design. I google image searched a tshirt and
downloaded it, then I used Illustrator to trace that image with
the pen tool to create 2 T-shirts just so you can visually
imagine it. I then used Illustrator to create the hair and the
razor using the pen tool and tracing images. I then chose
what colors I wanted everything to be and placed them on the
shirts. After that I made a path that followed the hair and typed
the name of the company across it. I then used a text box to
add the established date.
