MONTAGE
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Communications 130 Section 8
Date : 12/10/14 Adobe Photoshop
Description:
A montage conveying a spiritual message by blending different images together.
Objectives:
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message.
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop
skills for layout with multiple elements.
Apply typography principles and select quality images.
I first planned out what my message was going to be and the images that I wanted to use. I
found the two images on the Internet and I first used the larger image of the Earth and lake
as the background. I cropped the image to 1 1x 8.5 inch and I decided to use the Gaussian blur
tool to blur out the earth. In another Photoshop document I pulled up the image of Jesus and
cropped it to 11 x 8.5 inch. I used the lasso tool and set it to 100 pixels to create a feathered
effect. I then dragged the image to the document of the earth image. I then used the hue and
saturation tool increase the saturation of the image, focusing on the face. I also used the smart
sharpen tool to sharpen his face. I then used the brush tool and faded the head wrap a little and
the white background that surrounded the body of Jesus. For the title Supreme I used the effect
overlay and applied an outer glow and a drop shadow with an orange color background. For the
title creator I used the filter effect of overlay and then added a drop shadow as well as an outer
glow to make it stand out more. For my body copy I made a few key words larger. For the word
God I decided to use an overlay effect with a drop shadow that had a black color shadow.

BROCHURE
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Communications 130 Section 8
Date : 12/10/14
Programs Used:
Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign
Description:
Design a two sided (duplex) brochure with a personally designed logo for a company.
Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original, new logo and use it in a
brochure. Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo. Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers,
and sub headers. Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.
Process:
I used InDesign to set up my template for my brochure to create a two fold brochure.
I started off with my design on my template and decided that I wanted it to have triangles
on them that werent all the same size. I used triangles to create the shapes that filled each
page. I wanted my color scheme to be pulled from the colors I used in my logo. I embedded my images on my template. For my body copy I used paragraph styles to make sure it
was line space paragraph style and I did the same with my headings. For my text wrapped
image I used Photoshop. I used the lasso tool to only select the parts I wanted and adjusted
the edges to make it look smoother. I saved the image and placed it on my template.
I created my logo in Illustrator and I used the free draw pencil tool. I drew the image of the
elephant all by using the pencil took without tracing an image. I varied the thickness of
the lines on the elephants face. I used the eye dropper tool to get the whole image to be a
white color. I then added my text and placed it close to the elephants face. I then used the
rectangle tool to make the a background and border that would make the image and text
stand out. After I finished my logo I saved it and opened it up to place it in my InDesign
document.

PHOTO DESIGN
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Communications 130 Section 8
Date : 12/10/14
Programs Used:
Adobe Photoshop
Description:
Create a full bleed advertisement that demonstrates quality photography skills and image editing skills.
Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills. Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those
colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout. Adjust image levels, saturation, color
balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE. Use layers to design text, and repeating
graphic elements in Photoshop.
Process:
First I decided on a color scheme and I decided on a complimentary color scheme. I then
decided on the type of Ad I wanted to do and the image that would go with the Ad. I used
a cannon camera to take the picture of the soccer ball outside and I tried to focus on the
soccer ball to make it stand out. I then inserted the image into a Photoshop document
that was 8.5 x 11 where I was able to change the images saturation and levels. I wanted the soccer ball to be a red color and the nike sign to match with the green grass so
I used the selection tool to change the hue of the soccer ball. I then used the rectangle
tool to make the design on the bottom of the word active. I added a red the rectangle on
the bottom of the page as well. I made sure to align my text to the right as well as the
rectangles.

EVENT AD
Instructor: Ben
Course: Communications 130 Section 8
Date : 12/10/14
Programs Used:
Microsoft Word
Description:
Create a web page for a company with a logo that was personally created.
Objectives:
Comprehend image sizing. Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed
design. Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including
Photoshop.
Process:
I first scanned the 4 x 6 image that I printed out and changed the resolution according
to the dimensions. I uploaded that file to Word and I cropped a portion of the picture so
I can use most of the left side of the picture instead of the whole thing. I changed the
color of the image to a sepia color. I then added a few rectangles with the rectangle tool
and I made it so that it would be a border for the words of the title and body copy. I used
the reorder tool so that the top rectangle would be on top of the image and the bottom
one would be behind the image. I used the text box tool to arrange how close the words
would be to each other for leading. I also separated the rectangles so that there would be
more negative space. I wanted the title to be closer towards the top so that the dogs eyes
would lead the viewer to the image to create flow.

LOGOS
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Communications 130 Section 8
Date : 12/10/14
Programs Used:
Adobe Illustrator
Description:
Create three different logos designs for the same company.
Objectives:
Use Illustrator tools to create and draw the logos without live tracing or using photos.
Create three different original logos to fit a company or a personal image that is visually
appealing without copying existing logos or previous designs.
Process:
I have never used Illustrator before so I was able to learn a lot from this project. I first
planned out my designs by first choosing a company. From there I drew a lot of different
sketches that would work well with the company. I used the shape tool , pen tool, and the
direct selection tool to design the dog images. I manipulated the shapes to turn them into
a dog shape. I had to decide on the fonts that I wanted to use and I tried to vary the sizes
of the fonts in each of my logos. I then choose my color scheme by using the color wheel
and used the eye dropper tool to select the color straight from the color wheel. It was
difficult at times to get the desired shape you envision but after a while you know how to
manipulate the shape.

LETTERHEAD
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Communications 130 Section 8
Date : 12/10/14
Programs Used:
Adobe Illustrator and InDesign
Description:
Create an original logo design for a business. Create a matching letter head
and business card for the company.
Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing
logos or use previous designs. Dont use photos or live trace. Apply typography rules, keeping small copy. Keep designs simple with light watermarks and
drop shadows and plenty of white space.
Process:
I created my letter head design by using a rectangle shape to create the gold
border. I then placed my logo design on the top left corner and the flower
logo on the bottom right. I decreased the opacity of the bottom flower to
create a water mark. I added my contact information on the top right corner
and added a gold rectangle under the name of the owner.

BUSINESS CARDS
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Communications 130 Section 8
Date : 12/10/14
Programs Used:
Adobe Illustrator and InDesign
Description:
Create an original logo design for a business. Create a matching letter head and business card for the company.
Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or
use previous designs. Dont use photos or live trace. Apply typography rules, keeping
small copy. Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of
white space.
Process:
I first had to pick a few of my top choices for the companies that I wanted to design
for. I then sketched different designs for the business cards I focused more on the logo
and then focused on the whole layout of the business cards. I then designed my logo
in Illustrator using the pencil tool and the paint brush tool. I drew the flower design
and then I painted in the flower as well as the two petals. I then saved that document
and then opened up a new InDesign document to place my logo in. I used the line tool
to draw out the gold border surrounding the logo for the back of the card. I placed my
logo design in the name of the boutique. For the front side I my body copy was font
size 10pt. I added the logo on the top left corner and a gold rectangle under the name
of the owner.

WEB PAGE
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Communications 130 Section 8
Date : 12/10/14
Programs Used:
Adobe Photoshop, Text Wrangler, and HTML and CSS files
Description:
Create a web page for a company with a logo that was personally created.
Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. Write content to describe the
process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Acquire a working
knowledge of HTML. Acquire a working knowledge of CSS by customizing it. Identify hex
colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.
Process:
I have never used text wrangler, HTML, or CSS but it wasnt very difficult at all after doing
the tutorials. I linked my HTML file to my CSS file by embedding the code in my HTML.
From here I was able to add in the changes in the style in my HTML. I used the hex codes
to put them into my web page. I then embedded the code into my CSS file. I changed the
shape of the border on the top by changing the pixels in my border-radius in the body
section. I changed the font styles by adding in another font for the headings and body
copy. I did add padding around the logo and around the sides of the body copy so that
there would be more white space. I added my logo by saving it as a PNG and then added
the link in my HTML. I wanted to add a background image in my margin and I did so by
saving the image as a JPG and added the code into my CSS.

FLIER
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Communications 130 Section 8
Date : 12/10/14
Programs Used:
Adobe InDesign
Description:
Create a web page for a company with a logo that was personally created.
Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign
skills to improve basic flier layout. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign
document to keep links in InDesign intact.
Process:
I first sketched out a few layouts for the flier. I then choose the one that I liked the most
and changed some of the designs. The programs used to complete this flier was Adobe InDesign. In this program I was able to create shapes by using the rectangle tool as
well as the square tool. By using the rectangle tool I was able to fill it in with the color
black by using the color tool and I placed it behind the two titles. I used the text box
tool to fill in all of the text and placed it where I wanted to. I used the rectangle tool and
modified it by using the direct selection tool so that it would be a triangle. I placed the
triangles on top of the thin rectangle and grouped them together. I also used the same
kind of process with the rectangle tool to make the triangle where I placed the image.
