to thy unfailing patronage, pray for us, your

planted this rose garden of
Mary, and His sovereign might
made her piety His throne: he
who praiseth thee, O loving
Virgin, pleaseth such great
Goodness. Angels and men in
choir sing thee Ave! which is
a sweetmost canticle to divine
ears: demons confounded ee
from this melody! The rose is a
sacred temple of the Dispenser
of gifts, Who, transformed in
ames, cameth to hearts: in
His red colour, that of the rose
was seen. Crowned in heaven
with supreme glory, thou hast
not forgotten thine duty as
Advocate: with vast protection,

With sweet love each day, and

To take leave from thy presence pains us,


Queen of heaven, Mother of our Saviour, for

Bread of Angels

B A B ,
on Corpus Chrii. Under this symbol of love, Chri as Prie oered
a twofold sacrice, we sang on the Sacred Heart. A King of innite
goodness suered the punishment, we sang on the Precious Blood.
For this, Thou hide Thy glory upon our altars under the appearance of
bread and wine, we nally sing on Chri the King!
He suered in a bloody and myical
manner. Bloody, when Chri poured
forth His Blood on Calvary; myical,
when He inituted the Euchari. At
this table of the new King, the new Pasch
of the new Law endeth the ancient
Pasch. Chri oered Himself up as
Victim, as the Paschal Lamb! Behold,
the Bread of Angels is made the food of
earthly pilgrims. He became for us the
Ho Whom we receive in Communion.
O wondrous things!, the poor, the servant, and the lowly eat the Lord!
The wicked mob crieth out: We
will not have Chri reign over us! Such
iniquity, such unbelief, could not only
content itself with rejecting the sovereignty of our Lord. O grief!, a thorny crown
pierceth His lovely brow. It would cause
the faithless to impose upon our Lord

that crown of thorns, and mock Him,


Who is King of heaven and earth. But a
King of innite goodness suered the
punishment for all the sins of mankind.
His Heart meek, He imploreth the Father that as an Avenger He deroy not
the godless.
But we joyfully proclaim Thee:
King Supreme over all mankind. We
confess Thee, O Chri, to be the Prince
of every age, the King of nations, our
Prince that bringe peace. Therefore,
let us sing a hymn of praise to the Prince
of blessed peace. Sing, O my tongue,
Saint Thomas Aquinas counsels us, the
myery of the glorious Body and of the
precious Blood, and we proceed yea to
sing, which the King of the Gentiles, the
fruit of a noble womb, shed for the redemption of the world.

Let the rulers of nations extol Thee with public marks of honour; let teachers and judges worship Thee,
and laws and arts give expression to Thy love.

We have succumbed to the fashion of foregoing the sign of cross


either when asked to pray for a
meeting or when praying in and
with the public. Or when we are
in a reaurant, we ju make the
tinie possible sign of the cross to avoid arreing
the attention of other diners. Are we ashamed
that we have to make the sign of the cross before
we pray? Are we ashamed to profess faith in the
Blessed Trinity? If tolerating other creeds forces
us to relinquish our identity, our sublime
doctrines, then let us renounce that tolerance. Let
us end this nonsense! It is high time for heretics to
feel squeamish when the Truth slaps them smack
on their faces whenever we invoke the Triune
Godhead in the sign of the cross!

We mu kneel before the Lord
even if we mu break our knees.
Nobody can truly speak of respect unless they have known
what respect to the Lord is. Are
we afraid people would mock us when we
kneel? Should we care if we soil our trousers
and skirts? Kneel to the Lord, in church or in
the reet. Do not lien to them who did not
die upon the Cross to atone for your sins!

Saints are not fairies. They do not
grant us our wishes. What they
do is much more Chriian than
satisfying our every whim. They
help us pray to God that He
grant us that which is conducive
to our ation in life and to our salvation. So the
next time you do not snag that job you have been
aiming at for God-knows-how-long, or you fail
that nal exam you needed to ace to ay academically aoat, do not chaise Saint Rita for being
inept, or accuse Saint Joseph of Cupertino of being an idler. Perhaps some other job deserves you
better, or perhaps an exam should see you udying beforehand inead of gallivanting around.

Some Catholics harbour a deep
aection for relics that border
on the psychotic and the necromantic. Relics are to be exposed
for the veneration of the faithful, not kept at home as an amulet that gives advantage over earthly foes, or
amassed in order to boa of their number and
multiply their ecacy. Relics are objects of
devotion, not horcruxes! When we face the
Final Judgment, God will not ask us to submit
an inventory of the relics we possessed.

n October , the Blessed Virgin Mary decisively defeated


the Turks in Lepanto. On September , she guided to
great victory the disadvantaged army of King John of Poland
again the Turks under the walls of Vienna. Our forefathers in the faith did
not call the Great Mother of God Our Lady of Victory for nothing. She is
indeed both Conqueress of evil and Empress of the world!

Between these two, she granted another triumph, on October , this


time, to an archipelago rewn athwart in
the Pacic. Amid the pealing of the bells
of all the churches of Cavite, with the
Blessed Sacrament exposed in the military chapel and in all churches of Manila,
the tiny Catholic force of the Philippines

On April , the procurator general
of the Dominicans requeed the see of
Manila to declare the victory a miracle.

The Dominicans, who then and now
foered the devotion to the Holy Rosary,
keep the miraculous ivory image of the
Virgin in the left altar of the po-war
church of Saint Dominic. Come October,
amid the adulation of the faithful, the
Blessed Virgin is enthroned in the sanctuary of the church. Days before her fea
on the second Sunday of October, which
conitute the novena in honour of the
Virgin of the Rosary, the faithful ock to

ly Sacrice of the Mass, and to contemplate on the Blessed Virgin in her glory
and beauty, meditating upon the myeries of the Holy Rosary, praising her in
hymns, and kissing her resplendent mantle. This latter act of lial devotion to the
Virgin of the Rosary is called the besamantos. [In the Philippines, this has been corrupted to besomanto.]
Devotees of all walks of life march to
their Queenthe wrinkled and the unblemished, the shabby and the glamorous,
the dirt poor and the lthy rich, the tightlaced and the swishy, the hale and the
unhaleas if they hear the wondrous
declamations of Saint Ildephonsus: that I
may be a devout servant of the begotten
Son, I rive eagerly to become the servant
of the Mother of God for thus passeth
as honour to the King, that which mayeth
be delivered to the service of the Queen.

On the day of her fea, her devotees


carry her in procession, resplendent upon
her carriage in the shape of a galleon, with
a retinue of saints. On her fea the
weather always becomes inclement, but
her devotees consider the rains a blessing
from the Blessed Mother, and, come hell
or high water, they march for the Queen
of the Holy Rosary in what has been
dubbed as the procession of processions.
This years fea of La Naval was no
exception, and in a joyous occasion, it
coincided with that of Our Lady of the
Pillar, October, under which title the
Blessed Virgin is venerated in places in
the Philippines which had suered before
from the Muslim marauders of Mindanao, the third principal group of islands
that form our archipelago, which had
resied full conversion to the True Faith,

O L P :
Saint James was preaching in Spain, with great
failure. Nothing he did had borne fruit successfully. Apparently there was great failure in the miniry of Saint James, until on January near A.D., the Virgin
Mary appeared to Saint James in Spain. And then she promised
Saint James that she would bless his preaching, and that his
preaching would bear fruit. And as a sign of the blessing of our
Lady, our Lady commanded the Angels to bring to Saint James
an image of herself and her Son anding on a pillar. Thus, in the
year A.D., the Nuera Seora del Pilar arrived in Spain, and it
is with the prayers and intercessions of the Virgen del Pilar that
the Chriianisation of Spain was dedicated. []
Spain was conquered by the Muslims. What the jihadis
today in Iraq and Syria want to do, they have been attempting to
do it since time immemorial. They succeeded in conquering Paleine, and the Arab region. And when they have eablished
their reign, when they have eradicated, when they have deroyed the Chriian civilisations in the Arab nations, particularly, Paleine, they arted to go to Europe. But they wanted to
deroy Europe because of Europes Catholic Faith. [] Spain
had to ruggle again Muslims. They were able to drive away
the Muslims thanks to a vision of Santiago Matamoros. They
were engaging in a battle again the Muslims, when, suddenly,
Santiago appeared riding upon a white horse, and led the Spanish
army to victory again the Muslims.

of the Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Chri, the Roman Catholic and
Apoolic Church resieth unharmed all manner of persecutions, it being absolutely impossible that the gates of Hell
may prevail again Her. The oppression by brute force, crowning Her with martyrs, rejuvenateth Her; and the contradictions
of error, enriching Her with doctors, maketh more manife Her
divine origin and Her supernatural power. If it concerneth defending the Chriian Religion, in dying, nobody, as the true

children, now deceived by the specious sophisms of error, now
dragged by the currents of vice, march blindly along the paths of
their eternal perdition. For this the Catholic Church raiseth Her
eyes upset in tears to the augu Mother of God, placing in Mary
all Her condence and hoping from her the remedy of all Her
necessities. In times of peril, Mary hath always been Her refuge;
in the mid of battle, Mary hath been Her defender; and amid
the horrors of persecution, the inexhauible mercy of Mary
hath always shone bright, as a harbinger art of peace. Victorious over Satan from the r inant of her conception, forechosen from before the ages to be the Mother of God, joined to
her Divine Son in the magnicent work of human Redemption,
there is no, nor can there be neither in heaven nor on earth, neither among the saints nor among the choirs of angels, power
as the power of Mary, goodness as great as the greatness of her
goodness, dispositions of love as the love of her motherly dispositions for all who implore her patronage and invoke the mercy of

I may be a devout servant of the begotten
Son, I rive eagerly to become the servant
of the Mother of God. Thus insomuch as
mayeth be rendered to God, that which
mayeth be a slave to the Mother; thus
overoweth unto the Son, that which
mayeth be devoted to the Mother; thus
pertaineth to the suckling, that which
mayeth be applied to the nurse; thus
passeth as honour to the King, that which

Gladdened with the angels, cheered

his chirograph Tra le sollecitudini, Pope Saint Pius X declares the
end of sacred music to be the glory of God, and the sanctication and edication of the faithful. The Sacred Congregation of Rites, in De
musica sacra, ranks religious hymns of the people as sacred music.
The people of the Philippines, an
archipelago with a rich Hispanic patrimony, both religious and civic, has preserved
a devout tradition of singing the Holy
Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The
exact origins of this pious and ardent
practice, at lea in the Islands, are too
nebulous to approximate.

This tradition is called rosario cantado.


Nowadays and in some places, the term
has been corrupted as rosario cantada, perhaps to rhyme with misa cantada, or perhaps many associate the word rosario to
women (for, while it is a feminine name in
the Philippines, it is, in fact, a masculine
noun in the language of Cervantes), facili-

Devotion to the Virgin of the Pillar is
intimately linked to the Chriianisation
of Iberia. Saint James the Greater had felt
hopeless before the pagan obinacy of the
land. The Mother of God appeared to
him to console him, and presented to him
a likeness of her anding on a short pillar.
The place of this apparition on the banks
of the Ebro is now a basilica in Zaragoza,
dedicated to the Virgin of the Pillar.
During the countless battles to recover the lands for our Lord Jesus Chri,
Chriians looked upon Saint James the
Moorslayer and the Virgin of the Pillar

for heavenly protection. It is only but natural for the same Pillar of Faith, who had
succoured the armies ghting the Muslims of Spain, to place in her special bosom that island which Islam refuses to
relinquish to the dominion of heaven.
Likewise, we, therefore, call the Virgin of the Rosary, who obtained for us
victory again heresy, La Naval de Manila. She is La Naval because she is La
Victoria Naval, the Naval Victory, of those
outnumbered men doubtless rengthened by the prayers of the populace, and
protected by the maternal aection of the
Virgin Deipara. And we continue to call
her La Naval to remind us that we are ill
ghting a battle, in order to partake of the
rewards with the Blessed Virgin, whom
we invoke in our prayers. LDVQM.

disappearance of Spanish in almo all
places in the country.
Filipino Catholics share this tradition
with Catholics in Hispanic countries. The
practice probably began in the augu
cathedrals of Spain, together with the
gozos, and spread by Spanish missionaries
in the New World, as a means of catechesis and conversion. It has been said that
the Rosary is the authentic Catholic
udy of Holy Writ, and, considering its
origins, we can conclude thus. The Rosary began as a practice of hermits and
anchorites of reciting all psalms. The
use of the beads began as a way of tracking which psalm is already being recited.
Pebbles were r used, and soon they
were connected to form a circlet.
In those ages, not all Chriians could
recite the psalms. Fir, copies of the
Scriptures were limited and too expensive
to reproduce (they had to be chained to

desks to prevent theft). Second, not everyone could read. So monks in monaeries, around which the r cities of Europe
began, replaced the psalms with prayers:
the Lords Prayer, the Angelic Salutation
in particular, the Minor Doxology, &c. It
is by this provenance that the Rosary is
also called as Marys Psalter.
The myeries were then introduced
to guide Chriians in the meditation of
Holy Writ. They were not xed for a long
time, and the current division of the Rosary into joyful, sorrowful and glorious
myeries is what mo Catholics recognise as the Dominican form. As a pious
practice, the Rosary varies in form as per
region in Chriendom, but the core
ructure is universal. Singing the Rosary
is one way of praying it. And what a beautiful and wondrous a way it is for Saint
Auguine, meditating on the psalms, was
moved to declare that singing well and
with a good intention is praying twice!

At the end of each decade, the Marian ejaculation is usually said. Prior to the emergence of the Fatima prayer, Catholics in Spanish countries recited the O Mara, Madre
de gracia, which is then followed by the sung verse Virgen, divino sagrario.

The two middle lines of the Virgen, divino sagrario are changed depending on the myeries being meditated upon. For joyful myeries, gozos, and ellos are used. For sorrowful
myeries, either penas and ellas are used, or dolores diremos replaces glorias cantaremos.

by the same religion, Islam, and that is the
reason I would like us to invoke the intercession of Our Lady of the Pillar, la Virgen del Pilar.
The [image of the] Nuera Seora del
Pilar was our Ladys way of rengthening
the weakening faith of Saint James the
Apole. In order to assure Saint James
that our Lady would accompany him in
his troubles as he proclaimed the Gospel,
our Lady commanded the Angels to entru to Saint James this image of herself
as Our Lady of the Pillar. If there is anything which we should ask Our Lady of
the Pillar, it is really a prayer, a petition,
for the rengthening of our faith, especially in our time, when it is easy for people to water down the Faith, in a time
when secularism is forcing the Catholic
Church to rethink Her doctrines. And
that is unfortunate! [] Because it is not
the doctrine of Chri that mu adju
and convert to the secular mentality, but
that it is secularism that mu be converted to the Catholic Faith. []
A woman praised our Lady because
her womb was so privileged; she bore in it
the Son of God. And her breas were so
privileged because with them she fed
Gods Only-begotten Son. But our Lord
corrected the woman and revealed to the
woman the real nature of the blessedness
of Mary. He said: Blessed are they who
hear the word of God, and keep them.
At the Visitation, Saint Elisabeth,
inspired by the Holy Spirit, praised Mary
for her faith: Blessed are you because you
have believed everything that was revealed to you by God. And so Mary is
rightfully pillar of faith. She is rightfully
Nuera Seora del Pilar. Let us run to her,
call on to her, entru ourselves to her,
and pray to her: Holy Mary, help us in
our faith, help us because our faith is
weak, and we are about to fall.

he Catholic Church has adopted
Latin as Her ocial language because She is the Universal Church. She
has been appointed to teach all nations
and, consequently, for Her, no national
barriers can exi. To say the Mass in a
national language, however convenient it
might be, would be unworkable in the
Catholic Church simply because She is
Catholic. Her oneness of faith is typied
in Her oneness in speech.
