The Jazz. The previously sold out show is moving to a
new venue (the Miners Hall) and that means more tickets
are now available! If you missed out on the first round of
tickets you still have a chance to experience this magical
holiday event.
With the help of the RCAC, born and raised Rosslander
Andrew Cullen is making a return to his home town and
bringing with him world class musicians. For the past five
years Andrew has been busy studying jazz at Vancouver Island University and touring across Canada. He is
very excited to bring his soulful arranging style and good
feelin jazz standards to Rossland. Vancouver Island Universitys Department Chair Bryan Stovell said at the trios
last performance, It doesnt get much better than this!
Vancouver Island musicians Patrick Courtin and James
McRae are thrilled to be travelling to Rossland to play
this one-off show. Joining them will be local singer extraordinaire Nadine Tremblay. Together, the Andrew Cullen
Trio will bring Christmas magic to Rossland. Bring your
of-age friends and family to enjoy an evening of music
and laughter.
The show will take place on December 19. Doors open
at 6:30 pm and the music will start at 7 pm. Please note
the event has changed venues and will now be held at the
Miners Hall.

Celebrating 15 Years
It started as Relay For a Friend in 2001, from there it
has grown into Relay For Life, the Canadian Cancer Societys biggest national fundraiser. Hard to believe that 2015
marks the 15th anniversary of the Greater Trail Relay!
This anniversary is an incredible display of community
support and passion. Each year, Relay For Life participants come together to celebrate the lives of those who
have overcome cancer, remember loved ones lost and
empower individuals and the community to fight back
against the disease.
The generosity of the Greater Trail community is outstanding. Kudos to the hundreds of volunteers, the generous sponsors and donors. Thousands of hours have been
dedicated to fundraising to support Relay For Life over
the years. Those dollars are vital to the Canadian Cancer
Society as it continues to work towards the eradication
cancer while enhancing the quality of life of the people
living with cancer.
Since 1947, the Canadian Cancer Society has funded over
$1.2 billion in cancer research. Without question weve had
a major impact when the Society first started funding innovative research the overall 5-year survival rate was 28%.
Today, the survival rate is 63%, with major advances in certain cancers. For example, we know that 82% of children
now survive cancer and that the breast cancer survival rate
has jumped to 88% a 35% increase since 1986.

CAUGHT SHOPLIFTING?
NOW WHAT?
How embarrassing stopped by a
security employee as you leave the store
and accused of shoplifting! Youre taken
to a back room to wait while the police are
called. And now youre looking at going to
the station to be photographed and finger
printed and appearing in court to face the
music.
If this has happened to you, youre far
from alone. Shoplifting is perhaps the
most common criminal offence in Canada.
And despite popular belief, its not only
the young or desperately poor who do it
people from all walks of life get caught
shoplifting.
Young people may sometimes do it on
a dare. For adults, it may be just a sudden
impulse or even sheer forgetfulness. But
no matter, taking store property with
intent to deprive the owner amounts to
stealing. Even if its only a chocolate bar, it
constitutes theft under $5,000 under the
Criminal Code.
If convicted, the potential penalties for
theft under are a fine of up to $2,000 and
a jail term of up to 6 months. And youd
end up with a criminal record. Some of
the consequences are restrictions on travel
you may not be able to enter the US, for
example and employment difficulties,
both with your current boss and potential
future employers.
And since theft is seen as a crime of
dishonesty, theres a certain stigma attached to
it and a conviction may disqualify you from
certain jobs altogether.
But depending on the circumstances, there
may well be things that a good criminal
defence lawyer can do to minimize the nasty
consequences of a shoplifting charge.
Particularly if its a first offence, she

may be able to persuade the Crown
prosecutor that diversion (sometimes
called alternative measures) would be
appropriate. The prosecutor is in a position
to divert the case out of the criminal
justice court process altogether and
substitute alternative measures. This may
happen if you acknowledge youre sorry for
what you did and agree to make amends.
The alternative measures could mean
returning or paying for the stolen property,
counselling, making a gift to charity and/or
spending time doing community service.
If the prosecutor agrees to divert the case,
theres no court hearing, no conviction and
no criminal record. But beware even if
obtained, its a one-time-only pass.
Or your lawyer may be able to improve
the outcome of a shoplifting charge, even
if it goes to court. Maybe, for example,
you can get an absolute discharge or a
conditional discharge and probation. In
this case, so long as you fulfil the conditions
of probation, theres no conviction and no
criminal record.
Separate rules apply to young offenders,
so if your child or teenager is caught up in
such a situation, seek good legal help right
away too.
If you find yourself accused of shoplifting,
dont try to go it alone. Remember you have
the right to remain silent you dont have
to say anything to the store personnel or
police that could incriminate you. And
remember you also have the right to ask to
talk to a lawyer. Make use of that right, and
follow the advice youre given.

Selkirk College Continues To Offer

Tuition-Free ABE
In light of proposed changes to Adult Basic Education
(ABE) programs from the provincial government, Selkirk
College President Angus Graeme is reassuring current
and prospective students that academic upgrading courses will continue to be free of charge for the next semester.
Selkirk College has no plans to charge tuition for ABE
in January, Graeme says. Our board approved our tuition fees for the 2014-2015 academic year this past February through to July 2015. Governments decision to
lift the tuition-free policy for ABE programming in BC
will not change our plans for providing tuition-free ABE
opportunities for learners at this time. Until we receive
a clear commitment that no reductions to our operating
grants are planned by the province for ABE programming, we will also not be contemplating any changes to
our programming or tuition charges.
Selkirk College offers ABE programming out of its
Castlegar, Nelson, Trail, Kaslo, Nakusp and Grand Forks
locations. For the fall of 2014, Selkirk College registered
457 students in ABE courses. Upgrading with Adult Basic
Education courses provides a wide variety of options for
learners in the West Kootenay-Boundary region. A large
number of the students registered in ABE each year use
their completed courses as a springboard into further
educational opportunities.
ABE programming is a primary source of qualified students
who continue on to take our credit programs at a time when so
many prepared workers are required in the economy.

On December 6th Zeus was surrendered to the

Trail Regional BCSPCA when his owner could
no longer care for him. Zeus is an 8 month old
boxer/border collie with a ton of puppy energy!
Zeus is your typical older puppy who craves
play time and affection. He needs his basic
obedience, crate and leash training, and
would do best in a home where he will receive
plenty of daily exercise. He would do well with
positive reinforcement training. He does enjoy
playing with some of the other dogs here at
the shelter, but is still learning his boundaries
as he plays roughly.

Kootenay Lake Fishing

The Current State
As expected, fishing has its ups and downs on every
body of water. And whether it be a natural cycle or intervention of humans, or a management issue, there has to
be peaks and valleys. Every ecosystem works that way.
Its common knowledge that our kokanee numbers have
declined drastically thats true. With over 150 days on
the lake each year and over 20 years experience, we have
seen these patterns before. But, I can tell you that the rainbow trout are still around. We are catching them. They
just might not be as big as usual due to the lack of food.
Our fishing as of late has been fairly consistent. We are
still getting out on a regular basis, and contrary to some
stories out there, we are still catching fish. Lots of smaller
rainbows have been feeding lately, as well as a few big fish.
You just have to put your time in. We have been putting
in our time, and we are out there regularly, and thats why
we have been catching fish. Just remember, you cant catch
them from the couch.
There certainly havent been a lot of boats out there lately. But, thats one of the great things about this lake. Its
not overcrowded. Our clients from the bigger cities cant
believe how pristine our area is and they cant believe how
little traffic is out on the water. Its like we have the lake
to ourselves. What a great resource. These same clients
are also having a blast catching fish. While we may not
have the 20-pound class fish hanging around lately, most
tourists have been very happy with catching fish between
2 13 lbs. Where else can you experience the chance of
catching rainbow trout over 10 lbs and enjoy the spec-
tacular scenery. We may have been spoiled by regular big

fish in the past, but the out of town folks are still excited
to share this exciting fishery.
As we are experiencing this so-called downward cycle,
keep in mind that there are still fish out there and it is still
called fishing. A day of fishing is all about the experience.
Spending any time out on the lake is very gratifying to us,
and being able to spend a day on the water with a bunch of
buddies is what its all about. The fish are an added bonus!
So, dont be discouraged by some of the stories. And

Focus Groups
The Kootenay Boundary Community Services Co-operative (the Koop) is inviting residents from Nakusp, Creston
and Castlegar to participate in their focus group sessions
addressing the delivery of community social services programs. The sessions are set for January 2015 and an honorarium of $40 and refreshments will be provided.
Says Koop executive coordinator, Prudence Elise Breton, We are aiming for a diverse group of 6-8 residents
in each municipality. We are looking forward to learning
more about how the public perceives community services
organizations through this project. We are encouraging
individuals to apply who are 21 or older, have resided in
the region for five years or more and who are not currently employed (or do not have immediate family employed)
by a social services organization or related ministry.
The project requires a time commitment of 1.5 to two
hours of one evening. To apply to participate, email
