Title: Practicing Capacity with non-standard units of measurement

Pupils prior learning: Structured learning through play in P1-P3 years.

Students also have the experience from the exploration with the
definition of capacity from Tuesdays lesson.

Thinking skills and personal capabilities focus:

Thinking, Problem-Solving, and Decision-Making:
during this lesson students will be estimating and
measuring capacity with a variety of containers that
they would interact with on a daily basis. During this
time of exploration, students will be asked to generate
possible solutions, try out alternative approaches and
evaluate outcomes.
Working with others: based off of Tuesdays lessons
students and I will be focusing on developing routines
of turn-taking, sharing and cooperating amongst
teammates.

Introduction:
Students and I will review what we learned on Tuesday. We will discuss
what we thought versus what we learned.
Watch YouTube video, which depicts the word capacity in another form of
visual representation for the students.
Inform students of todays activity and exploration.

Activity:
Students will be given a worksheet that has a variety of containers listed.
The students job is to estimate and measure how many mugs, water
bottles, milk cartons, etc. of water will it take to fill their bucket up to full
capacity.
Students will be completing the task in groups of 4 or 5 students.
Plenary:
To wrap up the lesson the students will share out their findings and
complete the measurements on the smartboard.
Students and I will discuss how this lesson helped them understand
capacity better. Ask students if they have any questions after their
exploration today.
Assessment/Monitoring:
Oral - children's responses to questions during the discussion.
Written through the completion of childrens worksheets
Photographs as a record of children's work.

Role of the teacher:

Encourager: as the encourager it is my job to make
sure all my students feel confident in their
expectations and with the new content at hand.
Whether that confident level start right off the bat
or not experienced until the end of the lesson.
Guide on the Side: this activity is meant for the
students to explore the word capacity and how we
can measure capacity using non-standardized
measurements. It is my job to support students,
but allow them to work together in solving
questions they may come across.
Key Questions:
Why is it beneficial to estimate your answer before
measuring?
How did todays activity help you understand what
capacity is?
What are you still confused about?
