How did Ancient Egyptians make mummies?
By Cindy Grigg
You may have
seen mummies in scary
movies or as Halloween
decorations. Mummies
can't walk around and
scare people like they do in movies. But
mummies are real. In ancient Egypt, people
were very careful when making a mummy. They
took seventy days to make one!

The Egyptians used special oils to make

the mummies of important people smell good.
5
Pharaohs wore masks of gold! A simple burial
6
had a mummy inside one coffin . Royal burials
had many decorated coffins, one inside another.
The mummys tomb was filled with everything
the dead person might need in the afterlife.

1. What is this reading mostly about?

First, Egyptians took out the organs.
They thought the brain was of little use. They
1
took it out through the nose with a hook . Then
2
they threw the brain away and cut the belly
open. Egyptians took out the lungs, stomach,
liver, and intestines. They threw them into the
river or buried them in the ground. For important
mummies, Egyptians put the organs in special
3
jars called canopic jars. They thought the heart
was the place for the soul so the heart stayed
inside the body.
