Brochure
Description:
A two sided folding brochure.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

I used both InDesign and Photoshop heavily. I started with a paper version that was drawn and
measured out to exact increments. I then replicated the size of the paper and the layout along
with the fold measurement guides into InDesign. I used images from Google to make a mock
car advertisement for Chevy. I used Photoshop to edit and mask out the background in some of
the car photos o that only the car would appear. I then took one of the images and using Photoshop, extended the background out to fit a whole page. I used this background for my entire
brochure. I placed the edited images in the InDesign document and used both shapes and text
wrapping to create the paragraphs. I used paragraph settings to keep the text bodies the same.

Programs/Tools Used:
Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop

Message:
To attract the attention of the target audience in order to make the brand of car look desirable
and modern.

Audience:
Adults mainly male, from 25-35

Top Thing Learned:

I learned how to measure, lay out, and print a double sided brochure.

Color scheme and color names:

Monochromatic, Grey, White, and Black

Montage
Description:
This project is an inspirational montage created by blending two images and use of text.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, Steps taken while designing):

I used a photo of my CTR ring and another photo taken from the internet. I placed the photo of
the lightning down first and then positioned the CTR ring on top of it. This was all done in Photoshop. Then I used a mask to feather out the edges of the ring until it blended nicely to the road. I
left just enough reflection to be noticeable while still blending in. I then added my text, aligned it,
and did some final tweaking till I had it just the way I wanted it.

Message:
The message in this piece is in the quote by Elder Eyring. It is to choose the right even when
things seem dark and stormy in life.

Audience:
Fellow students of BYU-Idaho.

Top Thing Learned:

The top thing I learned with this project would definitely be masking. By the time I got done, I
had a much greater understanding of it.

Stationary
Description:
This project was to create a matching personalized letterhead and business card with matching
designs and a personally created logo.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

The logo is what I started with. I went into Adobe Illustrator and created a few. Along the way
I used the image of a video cassette tape and decided to use that as its own logo. So it used
the layout of that image to add the name of the company into the outer image and had the logo.
Next I opened a new file in Adobe InDesign and rather than trying to recreate the logo there, I
just placed the AI file into the page instead.
I started with my letterhead. I had seen a lot of them that were very squared off and organized.
I wanted to try something a little more natural looking, so I used the tools shapes to create the
border in each of the corners. Then I added the logo and information into the corners. The last
thing I did was add another logo, this time very large, into the center. I then lowered the opacity
so that it would be very light.

Next I did the business card. I wanted to keep it simple. I felt the logo spoke for itself. So I simply placed it on the front. Since that used lots of space on the front, I wanted to leave a lot more
white space on the back. So I used some simple color coordinated lines to add to it and put the
information down.

Message:
This is a graphic design and video production company.

Audience:
Anyone looking for video production services.

Top Thing Learned:

How to incorporated the two programs together. The basics of both Adobe Illustrator and Adobe
InDesign.

Flier
Description:
A quick handout done in black and white about a leadership conference for recent
graduates.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

I started with some simple sketches. Afterwards, taking my favorite idea, I created a rough draft
using InDesign. I wanted to keep it simple while still using a lot of black on white contrast. I was
provided with the image and logo at the beginning of the project.

Message:
The message here is simply to inform. I want to let these new graduates know that there is an
opportunity here for them to gain a bit of an edge in practicing leadership. They can get this
through the conference.

Audience:
My audience is any recent graduates. They will most likely be in their twenties to early thirties.

Top Thing Learned:

As I am a beginner, this project really helped me delve into and begin experiencing work with
InDesign. More than that however, it is a first step into design as a whole. The biggest thing for
me was probably alignment. Getting things to line up and look appealing was a challenge.

Event Add
Description:
This add for an imaginary event was created using only Microsoft Word and a scanner. It was
designed to be a full color bleed.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

I used a simple image scanner to scan an image from a magazine. This allowed me to learn
how to generate a decent high quality image from a simple photo. I then experimented in word
with several different crops until finally deciding that the full image worked best. I completed the
add using Microsoft Word.

Message:
The message here was simply to inform the viewer of a seminar for family history work. It was
meant to encourage them to attend the seminar.

Audience:
The message was for male Latter Day Saints. I hoped that the missionary underlying tone would
connect and help motivate. By reminding them of missionary work, I hoped to link the two mentally.

Color scheme and color names:

Analogous - Colors: Green, Yellow

Top Thing Learned:

I learned a lot about scanning a quality image.

The photo was taken from October 2014 Ensign Magazine of The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints. It was used as illustration in the talk Missionary, Family History, and Temple
Work by Elder David A. Bednar. The original was a 5 x 6 inch picture, but I shrank it down to a
4 x 5 inch. I used the scanner located in the 107 Spori Lab located here at BYU-Idaho.

Webpage
Description:
This project was to create a website that showcases a personally made logo.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

This project started in a simple text-wrangler file. I had to use a basic understanding to type up
an HTML document to create a site. Afterwards, using CSS, I altered the colors, fonts, borders,
and alignment of the different elements and parts of the piece.

I had to link the two documents together using code. The site is not active yet, but the code was
tested to ensure that it would work.
Message:
It is simply to advertise for a video production company.

Audience:
Anyone in need of commercial, graphic design, or video production services.
Top Thing Learned:
Learned a lot about both HTML and CSS.
Color scheme and color hex:
Monochromatic: Violet: #53286D; Black: #000; White: #FFF

Title Font Families & Category:

Changes made to the CSS:

I changed the font families, the colors of the site to match the logo, the border around the body,
the corners of the border, the width of everything in general, the spacing between the lines, the
alignment of the logo, and the colors of the fonts.

Logos
Description:
The purpose of this project was to create 3 different logos for the same company.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

For this project I used Adobe Illustrator. I used the text tool and various fonts. I used the color
pallet to set the color schemes, and used the stroke and fill quite a bit to set the color and borders. I used anchor points to stretch the I out. Most of it was pretty simple. There wasnt anything overly complicated.
Audience:
Anyone who uses the company.

Top Thing Learned:

This was a huge help for getting started on the basics of Adobe Illustrator. It was a big learning
experience. I got a lot of basic knowledge of the basic tools and placement.

Photodesign
Description:
This Project was to demonstrate photography, photo editing skills, and a color scheme integrated into a piece with an original image that I captured just for this piece.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

The first thing I did was choose a color scheme. I decided on a complementary color scheme of
lime and violet. For my photograph, I used good lighting, composition, and focus to capture an
image that worked with the color scheme and message. I used a basic digital camera and Photoshop to enhance the photo. I touched up the levels, sharpness, saturation, and color balance
of the photo before creating an 8.511 inch project in Photoshop. I then integrated the photo,
color scheme, and message into one piece. I also labeled the colors used in the color swatches.

Message:
My message was one that requires some thought. Through the quote that I used, I hoped to
get the audience thinking. It is the idea that we as people are all human. We are all doing the
best that we can. It is meant to cause some reflection after reading it. IT is meant to be thought
provoking.

Audience:
This piece does not have a specific audience in mind aside from a human being. Specifically
English speaking adults.

Top Thing Learned:

I learned a lot about Photoshop in this project. I picked up a few skills in regards to the levels
and other small photo editing techniques. The biggest one would probably be the levels in the
photo. It is the light levels in the picture. Another useful one was the vibrancy settings.

Color scheme and color names:

I used a complementary color scheme with lime and violet as my two colors.

Photography
Light 1: Outside
I love having a nice overcast day. I love to see the clouds roll in and seeing the light peak
through. So I tried to capture it. Today was just cloudy enough to give me a chance. I managed
to snap this shot before the cloud bank passed. I used Photoshop to bring out the vibrancy a
little more and really sharpen it up.

Light 2: Inside
This ring has been with me through a lot of trials and good times. I received it as I was finding a
love of the Gospel and converting over. It has seen my lowest and highest points in life. I tried to
capture the light here with the bright white of the page of the Book of Mormon.

Focus 1: Foreground
Keeping the theme of the ring, my goal here was simply to learn how to focus on varying parts
of a photo. Here I used a red wrapped bottle in the background to make sure the back image
was easy to spot. Then I focused in on the ring in front.

Focus 2: Background
Naturally, after taking the first image above, I then refocused the camera. This time it was on the
bottle in the background. The purpose here was to make sure that I learned how to focus on the
subject that I wanted.

Composition 1: Leading Lines

The goal here was to use strong leading lines to frame up and compose a picture. I had used
the ring for my earlier pictures and felt it appropriate here as well. If you were to draw a tic-tactoe grid here, the ring would be set at the bottom left intersection along the leading lines.

Composition 2: Lead Room

This last photo is another use of composition known as lead room. The subject is lined up
along one side facing into the photo. Although my roommate was less than pleased with being
photographed and came out looking more like a mug shot than a profile, the overall idea is still
demonstrated here.

P R O D U C
After taking the photos, I did some basic touch up in Photoshop. I brightened the colors when
needed, lightened up the darker areas, made the colors a little more vibrant, and sharpened up
anything that wasnt quite clear enough.
