Imprisoned on Appeal

BALI THE RIGHT WAY

G'day again folks and welcome to the Schoolies issue of the Kuta Weekly
Bali's Premier Weekly Newspaper and isn't it great to see the young
Australians traipsing around town with Bintang tank tops on, holding the
obligatory green bottles with almost all being adorned with a tattoo of
some sort. I find it strange that the youngies of today seem to think it's a
right of passage to have a tattoo and the number of young women with
them is astounding. It's ok when they are young and have skin that you
aliasj@kutaweekly.com
can bounce a fifty cent from, and yes it looks great, however what
happens when the skin loses its ping and the forces of gravity start to take effect ?? I think in years to come unless
these chicks try to keep themselves in good shape they will end up doing their best to keep their body covered up
for no one to ever see. I imagine that wouldn't be a great way to grow old and raise kids Mummy why don't you
want to swim with me at the beach HHHmmmmm food for thought. So for now we can only enjoy and appreciate
the tattoos that are on the island at the minute and be thankfull that they are having absolutely no problem with not
covering up while they frolic in the pools and enjoy the beach. I find no greater pleasure than to enjoy the innocent
company of a young person that has just finished a few hard years of study and exams and is on the island to party
and is doing their best to be a grown up. The words of wisdom that you hear when you listen to a schoolie talk about
what they plan to do in the immediate future are great. Some just want to travel for a few years then knuckle down
into work and start their lives with others (usually the girls) wanting to get home and start grinding at a career
straight away. They have the most innocent ideals and after hearing these stories a few times I have actually learnt
to just listen. I have made quite a few long term, very good friends from Schoolies that have travelled to Bali for the
end of year break up which I have met over the years here on the island.
For the amount of friends that I have made over those years that are or have been schoolies, I reckon there would
have to be at least a thousand times as many drunken usless, foolish stupid immature other schoolies that I have
watched act in a manner befitting to an animal and actually, come to think about it, I don't think I have seen an
animal act as stupid. Some of them come to Bali and just lose the plot. They say most check in at the airport and
checkout their brains. The media back home absolutely bashes the crap out of Bali and these crazy Schoolies don't
do anything to help, as they just keep on being stupid and driving the media bandwagon that constantly bashes
Bali. I don't like to see the island slammed any more than the next guy (excluding Squirtell and his rambles on
occasion) but seriously if you are a School leaver and you happen to stay sober enough to read this blog, Please try
to represent Australia in a manner that is befitting to Australians. The people of Bali are a humble lot and don't need
you to remind them that your mummy and daddy gave you more to spend on this trip than they earn in 6 months.
Anyone who gets a kick out of saying this to a hard working Balinese should be taken to the airport and sent home.
The only reason that these people even entertain you is because they want to earn the money. Do you think that any
normal working person that you know would put up with you drinking yourself into oblivion then abusing
everyone you come across, then jumping into a taxi and vomiting everywhere. You wouldn't do it in Australia so I
question why the stupid few would do it here.

There is a volunteer crew that comes to Bali each year and works with the police, consulate and many hotels to try
and keep the behaviour of the schoolies at an acceptable level and help any of them that may find themselves in
trouble. They do a great job and they are called the Red Frog crew. You can
see their info on page 28 which we are happy to sponsor to help make Bali
safe for the many Schoolies that come here. Ok folks that's about my lot for
this week so I will leave you all to ponder and enjoy until next week. I trust the

Death by pickled egg!

A former Royal Marine
choked to death during a
'friendly' pickled egg
eating contest in his local
pub, an inquest heard.
Father of two Gary Sims
stopped breathing after stuffing
three eggs into his mouth in a bid
to win the challenge. The 55 year
old crashed off his chair and his
eyes rolled back, prompting
friends and staff to attempt the
Heimlich manoeuvre, before
ringing 911.
Despite their best efforts
Gary who was known as Joe to his
mates, suffered a cardiac arrest
and died in the ambulance outside
the Boar's Head Inn in Berkeley,
Gloucestershire. The hearing heard
the egg eating race was sparked after
Mr Sims saw a friend buying an egg at
the bar earlier this year.
He promptly bought six eggs,
each costing around 1, and issued
the challenge. His close friend and
witness said At 9pm a friend of his
decided to buy pickled eggs, at which
Gary issued a challenge, and more
eggs were purchased. The two
decided to have a race to see who

could eat the quickest, with

Gary putting all three in at once. He
swallowed then took a swig with his
pint to wash them down. I recall him
trying to look at me directly before his
eyes rolled in his head and he fell
backwards. Initially it was believed
he knocked himself out. Several of us
picked him up and put him in the
chair. It was very clear he was not
breathing.

handler issued advice over the
phone. The friends tried to
perform the Heimlich
manoeuvre without success
before attempting to unblock his
airway with their fingers. They
also performed CPR, which was
then taken over by ambulance
crew members. A second crew
arrived, but further efforts to
save him failed and he was
declared dead at 11.04pm. A
post mortem examination found
a 22mm long piece of egg white
lodged in his right airway. A blood
test revealed at the time of his
death he had 136 milligrams of
alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood,
the legal limit for driving is 80
milligrams.
Mr Sims suffered a hypoxic
injury due to shortage of oxygen to the
brain, which led it to swell. The local
coroner concluded that his death was
the result of an accident. She said
While drinking he entered a friendly
competition or challenge with another
drinker as to who could eat the pickled

Filipino ring icon

at the Cotai Arena

Sunday.
Pacquiao
dropped Algieri to the

during the 12 round
contest in the southern Chinese
city to win an overwhelming
unanimous decision: 119 to 103,
119 to 103, 120 to 102 on the
judges' scorecards.
Algieri, the unbeaten WBO
light welterweight champion, was
outclassed from the start, with the
eight division world champion

Pacquiao knocking the Long

Islander down twice in the second
round though on one occasion it
looked like a slip.Pacquiao was
landing punches at will as the
quick Algieri tried to run, slip and
hide from the onslaught.
But the congressman form
Sarangani province really turned it
on from the sixth, smashing Algieri

to the canvas
with a devastating
straight left.The
American only just
beat the count and
dropped to his knee
moments later as
blows rained in from
all angles.He
somehow survived
and was knocked
down twice more in

with one left sending
him sprawling across
the ring.
I'm satisfied, said
Pacquiao. I did my best. I was
trying for a knockout but he was
fast and keeps moving. He's
perfected his style, said Algieri.
He's perfected the art of fighting

Aussies bounce back against Irish

Australia have breathed life
into the International Rules
concept after an entertaining
10 point win over Ireland at
Patersons Stadium in
Western Australia.
The Australians were
dominant early in front of 38,262
spectators and led by as much as
33 points before Ireland launch a
major challenge after the half time
break.
Luke Hodge claimed the Jim
Stynes Medal as best afield with 24
disposals in the 0.17.5 (56) to 2.9.7
(46) win. Stevie Johnson was also
impressive with his five overs.Conor
McManus was named Ireland's best
for his four overs and 12
touches.David Moran, Ireland's only
representative from All Ireland
champions Kerry, was handed the
task of competing against Nic
Naitanui at the opening throw in.
Taking into account Moran's
190cm frame, the result went as
expected.The Australians were
untouchable early, with Johnson
kicking three early overs and skipper
Joel Selwood running around with the

ball on a string.Brent Harvey

was very nearly in on goal 10 minutes
into the match, but a fine save by
Ireland keeper Paddy O'Rourke
pushed the ball over the bar to save
three points.Staggeringly, it was the
Australian's skill with the round ball
which was helping them keep control
of the game and kick eight scores to
just two in the opening term.Irish
captain Michael Murphy gave his side
some hope in the shadows of quarter
time, with his over reducing the
margin to 18 points at quarter time.
The Irish started the second
quarter well, but Moran wasted an
early chance in front of goals. The
miss opened the doors for the
Australians, who recorded another

over off the boot of Johnson

and continued their dominant
ways.The Irish had their chances,
but kicked four straight behinds to go
into the long break trailing by 28
points.
The third quarter was a
completely different ball game.After
conceding the first two overs of the
term, the Irish sprang to life.Darren
Hughes gave his side hope when he
found himself one out with Aussie
keeper Dustin Fetcher and calmly
slotted the goal. A re invigorated
Ireland finally began to show their
experience with the oval ball, slotting
the next five overs of the game from all
angles to bring the deficit back to just
16 points with one quarter
remaining.Former Brisbane player
Colm Begley kicked the first over of
the final term for Ireland, putting the
result in real doubt.The Australians
quickly rallied and extended the lead
through overs to Chad Wingard and
Keiren Jack.Ireland were given some
hope when Nick Smith shanked a kick
and recorded an own goal with three
minutes remaining, but time was
ultimately not on their side.

the final over.Watson hit two sixes and seven fours to
show some timely form with the Test side for the
opening match against India in Brisbane on
December 4 named on Monday. But the 33 year old
missed out on a century when he tried to take on
Morne Morkel once too often and was caught at deep
mid wicket by Rilee Roussow.
Smith, who hit a match winning century at the
MCG last Friday and an unbeaten 76 in the third
match in Canberra, was handed a reprieve on 20
when he was called back to the crease after being
bowled by a Kyle Abbott delivery that was a no
ball. But it was another excellent all round display

20

Matthew Wade would not have enhanced their

chances by playing reckless shots to put their side in
trouble. An excellent 107 from South Africa opener
Quinton de Kock and some
powerful lower order batting
from Behardien (63) helped
the Proteas finish on 6 for 280.
After a strong start the
tourists' middle order
struggled against some
disciplined bowling, slumping
from 2 for 164 to 5 for 206 with
Pat Cummins continuing his
good form with figures of 3 for
54.Watson said he was happy
to hit some form with the bat
having not scored a 50 in one
day internationals for more
than a year.
"It's not a great stat, is it? But it was nice get
some runs, for sure," Watson said. "I've not played
too much one day cricket over the last year and it was
nice to see the good work I have been putting in to all
come together.
Proteas skipper AB De Villiers, who missed the
game due to a rib problem, said his side was hurting
after losing the series by such a wide margin and his
bowlers needed to improve their discipline. Ten no
balls across the course of the series cost his side
dearly.De Villiers wants the problem cleared up
before the start of the World Cup."It's unacceptable
and it shouldn't happen, it's not good enough, he
said.

Sex with sheep because he was stressed

A Student had sex
with a sheep
because he was
stressed about his
exams, he told
police.
The 23 year old
c o m p u t e r
engineering major
was caught with a
ewe in a barn on his
California university
campus. A passing
student heard noises
coming from the agricultural
department barn at 3.30am
recently. Fresno State caretakers
said the sheep was being treated
by a local vet.
One of the students from the
campus who helps care for the
campus horses, said the incident

was sick. It's just kind of

disgusting and revolting and
personally makes me angry, she
said. I mean why would you do
that?.
The student responsible was
charged with sexual assault of an
animal, and has since been
released. He told the authorities

he had been
drinking, and was
worried about his
midterm exams.
A parody twitter
account has already
been set up, with its
f i r s t t w e e t
announcing that
Baa means baa.
Other users joined in
with the fun, with one
observing that it was
a story that would
make you go ewe.
But many did not find the act so
funny, with students who work at
the sheep barn saying they were
repulsed. They have been banned
from saying any more about the
incident, which involved one of the
ewes raised for breeding.

Lewis Hamilton wraps up world title number 2.

Lewis Hamilton is King of the
Track again. Under the dark sky
of Abu Dhabi, fireworks greeted
the 29 year old Stevenage boy
turned global superstar as only
the fourth Briton to win multiple
Formula One world titles.

The fourth in line to another

throne, Prince Harry, went to the pit
wall to tell Hamilton over the radio
Lewis, thank you very, very much for
not making the British public sweat.
You are an absolute legend. Well
done, mate.
The team then came on to tell
Hamilton he was Mercedes Benz's
first champion since a chap called
Juan Manuel Fangio, in 1955. Fangio
was the greatest of them all, but
Hamilton is hardly a slouch.
The build-up to the race
was tense. Would Hamilton hold
on to his lead of 17 points, or
would Nico Rosberg spoil his
day? But it was, as HRH
observed, all in control long
before the 55th and concluding
lap. So much so that Rosberg,
suffering battery problems, was
lapped by Hamilton on the
penultimate circuit. Hamilton
took the victory, with Rosberg
14th, and the title by 67 points.
Double scoring, the great pre
race fear, was immaterial.And
when it was over, Rosberg
sought Hamilton out and held him,
congratulating a friend who has
turned into a bitter rival in the course of
a captivating nine months. It was a
typically gracious gesture from the
vanquished man.
As for Hamilton, his name can
be added to Graham Hill, Jim Clark
and Sir Jackie Stewart in the
pantheon of British double title
winners. Six years separate
Hamilton's first and second
championships, but now the
greatness he promised as a rookie of
prodigious gifts has been rewarded as
richly as his talent warrants. The race
had been set up perfectly by Rosberg
searing to pole position by 0.386sec.
Saturday has been the German's day
for most of the year.
But it is Sunday that counts and
Hamilton took little more than a blink

of an eye to roar into the

lead.Rosberg trundled off the grid.
Hamilton powered ahead, swept to his
right in front of his colleague and flew
through the first left-hand corner. By
the time Rosberg came round it,
Hamilton was virtually in Dubai, or
another planet. All weekend Hamilton
had exhibited tell tale jitters, given
exasperated answers in press
conferences and issued false
protestations about being cooler than
an ice cold bintang on a hot Bali
afternoon.
All those worries were
dispatched to the file marked 'i' for
irrelevance in one faultless
move.From that moment, the
outcome seemed inevitable. And that
is rare with Hamilton, a man who has
produced more drama over the years

than ITV. Still, how must it have felt for

Hamilton's family who were late,
surprise arrivals in Abu Dhabi.
His father Anthony paced up
and down, as his wont. His pop star
girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger, step
mother Linda and brother Nic, in a
Mercedes top, were all in the garage,
their eyes fixed on the timing
screens. But before the sun had set, in
the twilight of this dusk to night race,
Hamilton had established a
comfortable lead. By his first stop, 10
laps in, his advantage was 2.7sec.
Rosberg stayed out a lap longer but it
did him no good on rubber that was
only getting worse.
Rosberg's engineer Tony Ross
came over the radio to explain their
remedial strategy Keep the gap to
him (Hamilton) manageable and we'll
go long. But within minutes, the
German veered off track. That was

was about to suffer with his

energy recovery system (ERS).
Hamilton came in for new tyres as his
own time was briefly dipping
Scherzinger's bottom lip quivered, but
he only needed to be re-shod.
He came out and zoomed
straight past Rosberg, who had yet to
pit again. Both men were totally fair
and clean. Hamilton was away. Now
Rosberg had just one chance, namely,
to score heavily enough to take the
title if Hamilton were to stop.
Just get me into the top five or
six as safely as possible, he said.
Actually, he would have needed fifth to
have had a hope in hell. How am I
looking?, he inquired, while lying
seventh and fading. Not good at the
moment, he was told. What the hell
does that mean? What do I need to
do?. Just drive flat out. It was
truly the most pathetic exchange
of the season.
But it was not the last of its
sort. Hey guys, what's going
on? he asked. The car
switched off and now the throttle
is all over the place. Get my
brake pedal back now please.
Rosberg was told to retire, but
vowed to drive on regardless.
Felipe Massa tried hard to catch
Hamilton but he had to settle for
second, a place ahead of his
Williams team-mate Valtteri
Bottas. So the glory went to
Hamilton, and who can say he did not
deserve it? He is an extraordinary
British sportsman at something like
the peak of his powers. His 11 wins to
Rosberg's five is a fair reflection of his
superiority.
He can be moody. His jewelry is
not to everyone's taste. But there is no
denying sheer ability when you are
privileged enough to see itfirst hand.
He has also worked hard, carving
through the field after the bugler had
sounded the Last Post at the end of
several qualifying sessions.
A mark of Hamilton's
achievement is that he beat Rosberg,
who, through dedication and
willpower, made his talent go even
further than nature intended.
But, as in their karting days, it
ended up with Lewis Hamilton P1,
Nico Rosberg P2.

A factory worker who

won 1?million on the
lottery discovered he
was unable to get a
mortgage after returning
from a round-the-world
pub crawl, during which
he spent 72,000 on
alcohol.
Matt Myles, 28, who is
unmarried, quit his job and took
his brother Pete, 27, and several
friends on a seven-month bender
before returning to start a property
portfolio.
However, despite his fortune,
Mr Myles, from Hereford, has been
unable to get a mortgage because of
his previous poor credit rating.
After his Euromillions win, Mr
Myles, a former electrical engineer,
set off with friends on the trip. The
group partied in Indonesia and
America before flying to Brazil for the
World Cup in June. It was then on to
Thailand, Ibiza, Spain and Italy.
Mr Myles said yesterday: We

basically tried to do a night on, a

night off the sauce, but most of the
time it was night on, night on, night on.
I would say America was my
favorite purely because it is English
speaking.
However, he added: It is
expensive in New York. We spent
4,500 just to get in and sit at a table in
one place in New York. We got
smashed.
For his birthday in September,
Mr Myles briefly returned to Hereford
for a Great Gatsby-themed party for
350 people, complete with

champagne showers.
The group finally flew
home to Britain for good on
Nov 15.
Mr Myles said: We had
an amazing time but we all had
to come home and grow up.
I've got to buy a house and we
couldn't carry on much longer
without doing ourselves
serious damage. As well as
his 72,000 bar bill, he has
spent 45,000 on a Porsche
and 9,000 on an Omega
watch. However, he came down to
earth after being refused a mortgage
because he does not have a regular
income.
I was going to buy a load of
houses with mortgages and then get
people in to rent them to pay for the
mortgage, he said. But mortgage
lenders don't see the interest of an
investment as income so, in effect I
am a millionaire, but I can't even get a
mortgage.
He is now buying outright a
150,000 house in Hereford.

Woman Tries To Hide Murder

A Florida woman

authorities said.
According to
reports, Angela

putting several body parts in an
oven and in pots on the stove.
When that didn't work, she put
his body parts in bags and threw
them in the trash, authorities
said.
The report stated that
Stoldt's house smelled of
burning flesh. She told her

daughter the smell was just

a rat broiling in the oven.
Officials said a grand jury in

upgraded Stoldt's charges to first
degree murder from second
degree murder in the death of her
neighbor, James Sheaffer.
Law enforcement officials

said Stoldt
relied on Sheaffer
for money,

money was the
motive for the

Njohi, who is the pastor of the

Lord's Propeller Redemption
Church in Kenya, reportedly
refers to undergarments as
ungodly.
The bible-toting minister called
together a meeting with church
officials and allegedly discussed
banning the under garments because
people need to be free in body and
spirit in order to receive Christ.
After warning his female
congregants about the evils of
skivvies, the God-fearing pastor spoke
of the damnation they will suffer if they
dare not to go bare underneath.
In true fashion, the church's
female population reportedly did come
to church sans their undies, in order to
prepare for their spiritual taking.

Hindu people in Bali perform rituals to pray

for their safety and prosperity. These rituals are
also a representation of honour, perpetuation,
and protection. One of the rituals is Tumpek Uduh
ceremony. Also known as Tumpek Wariga,
tumpek bubuh, tumpek pengatag, and tumpek
pengarah, Tumpek Uduh is held 25 day before
Galungan (a holy day celebrated once every 210
days on Balinese calendar).
Tumpek Uduh is the day to worship the
god of vegetation, celebrated as ceremonial
event of blessing trees with porridge and other
offerings. The sacred ritual aims to remind people
of how important plants are as their staple food
source. The ritual also reflects human pleas for
Gods guidance in growing and keeping plants.
Offerings in Tumpek Uduh are presented
to God (Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa) in
manifestation of Sangkara (god of vegetation). In
Hindu concept, Sangkara is believed to be the
one who creates plants for human needs. As
gratitude and appreciation to Him, humans must
love all kinds of plants. Tumpek Uduh is an
appreciation for harmony, for harmony lets
humans live their lives in this world, something
humans have to be grateful for.

Honouring and appreciating the

motherland, especially the plants, are the ways for
humans to love nature and surroundings because
humans cannot live without them. Plants give life
to humans, as most human needs come from
plants, like food, shelter, and clothing. That is the
reason for devoting Tumpek Uduh as the day for
plants.
The celebration of Tumpek Uduh does not
propose Balis nature only; it celebrates the entire
worlds. Tumpek Uduh has been held for a long
time, even before the emergence of awareness of
preserving nature and the environment, before the
beginning of Earth Day, before December was
commemorated as the national month of tree
planting. Balinese local wisdom of appreciating
plants is an inherited tradition.
However, nowadays rituals and traditions
are simply done as ceremonies. In fact, Bali
continues having environmental issues, such as
unstoppable natural exploitation. The rituals can
be viewed as superficial instruments followed by
no-action-talk-only. In order to give a contextual,
total, deeper meaning to the rituals,
reactualization of Balinese traditional wisdom is
very essential. Therefore, Tumpek Uduh should
be able to bring up this reactualization.

Although you'll be busy with career and financial matters,

your heart may be aligned with more carefree pursuits.
Thoughts of travel, love adventures, new beginnings, and
sunny vacations could encourage you to research your
options. Meanwhile, Mercury's move into Sagittarius may
set you thinking about study and the benefits of adding to
your skill set. Finally, a Quarter Moon in Pisces brings
intuitive guidance your way. You'll need to act on it to find out
just how advantageous it might be.
Home and family matters can be a source of joy and
happiness right now, particularly as some good news may
be about to come your way. In addition, you may be very
excited about the potential for creating wealth. The current
alignment entices you to explore schemes and ideas with a
view toward becoming financially secure. Aided and abetted
by Mars in practical Capricorn, this combination of planning
and inspiration can go a long way toward helping you fulfill
your dream.
Relationships of all kinds take center stage, in a positive
way, as they bring out the best in you and encourage you to
have faith in yourself. Friends, family, and loved ones seem
eager to help you in any way they can. Plus, with
Thanksgiving looming you'll be in your element with a funpacked schedule that keeps getting better and better. But it
isn't a good idea to mix business and pleasure. Keep the two
separate for now so as not to muddle agendas.
The cosmos is encouraging you to go all out to improve your
health and fitness level. A focus on your lifestyle sector
suggests you might be inspired by the example of others
who beat the odds to lose excess pounds or overcome
personal difficulties to heal themselves and be an example
to the world. Whatever your issue, the current alignment
gives you the faith you need to try. In addition, it's a good time
to clear the air regarding a relationship issue.
With warm and fuzzy planets filling your romance sector, you
can have a lot of fun this week. Though you'll have
responsibilities to attend to, your mind could be on other
things - or perhaps on one particular person whose
company you really enjoy. This alignment can bring out your
inner entrepreneur, giving you creative ideas that you can
turn into business opportunities. You might be on a
dedicated health kick, too, and eager to discipline yourself to
look and feel really good.
With Thanksgiving Day drawing closer, you'll be in your element
as your extended family shows up at your door. A focus on your
home zone suggests you might be getting some unexpected yet
very welcome visitors, some of whom might be staying a while.
Mars in Capricorn spotlights your organizing ability and
encourages you to draw up plans and begin the preparations.
None of this seems like work - more like the best fun ever! Things
are about to get exciting!

This looks like a delightful week in which you'll be doing a lot of

socializing. The focus on your communication zone is bright
and breezy, encouraging you to reach out to those you haven't
seen in a while. It's also a great opportunity to showcase your
skills and abilities and get your business message out to the
world. Social media can be instrumental in paving the way to
success. You may be busy at home this week, but family and
friends will pitch in.

As Mars continues to stir up your communication sector,

you'll be eager to get certain matters off your chest. This
week's blend of energies hints that you'll also be something
of a strategist, especially if you're hoping to persuade
someone to back a plan of yours. Be careful, though, as a
misunderstanding could backfire on you. You'll be feeling
generous and eager to splurge on yourself and others. Don't
forget to put some money to aside to help shore up your
savings.
You are truly in your element and ready to take the world by
storm this week. A bright and very sociable focus on your
sign suggests you'll be personally involved in launching
plans, sharing ideas, and organizing get-togethers and
other events as the excitement builds around Thanksgiving.
When it comes to finances, this is an excellent time to plan
ahead. You're naturally generous by nature, but you may be
quite frugal when it comes to purchasing life's little luxuries
for yourself.
On the one hand, you'll be busy organizing and getting things
together. At the same time, a very marked focus on your
spiritual sector encourages you to relax and recharge daily.
Use this opportunity to remember the year and how much
you've accomplished. If you feel you've made mistakes, this is
your chance to reflect on how you might have done things
better. You also have a chance to prioritize your goals,
enabling you to zero in on those that inspire you most.

This is a fabulous time to expand your social horizons, move

in new circles, and generally mix and mingle with people
who both inspire and entertain. The coming week can be
excellent for enhancing romantic opportunities, especially if

The following is a myth busting info page covering different songs

or bands each week chosen by one of our many loyal readers,

Spiderbait

Please Enjoy

Spiderbait are an Australian alternative rock band

formed in Finley, a small town in rural New South Wales, in
1989 by bass guitarist Janet English, singer-drummer
Mark Maher (better known as Kram), and guitarist Damian
Whitty. In 2004 the group's cover version of the 1930s
Lead Belly song "Black Betty" reached number one on the
ARIA Singles Chart. They have five top 20 albums: The
Unfinished Spanish Galleon of Finley Lake (1995), Ivy and
the Big Apples (1996), Grand Slam (1999), Tonight Alright
(2004), and Greatest Hits (2005). The group have won two
ARIA Music Awards with the first in 1997 as 'Best
Alternative Release' for Ivy and the Big Apples and the
second in 2000 as 'Best Cover Art' for their single
"Glokenpop". Since late 2004, the band has been on
hiatus to concentrate on solo projects and their personal
lives although periodically returning for occasional gigs.
The band released their first studio album in nine years,
the self-titled Spiderbait in November 2013.
Early years In 1989, the three future members of
Spiderbait were performing together with Janet English on
bass guitar and lead vocals, Mark Maher (better known as
Kram) on lead
vocals and
drums, and
Damian Whitty
(or "Whitt") on
guitar. All grew
up in the small
town of Finley in
southern New
South Wales
where Kram
and his second
cousin Whitty jammed together as schoolboys. With
English on board, early rehearsals were held in sheds or
barns, Kram later recalled: "we were shithouse! We were
so bad ... I mean Janet had never played a note of music in
her life". Kram taught English to play bass. Initial gigs
included a friend's party as an unnamed band where they
played "Freak Scene" and an AC/DC cover song. They
performed at the combined 21st birthday party for Kram
and Whitty under the name Candy Spuds. They used that
name for only one gig and then used Spiderbaby.
In 1990, the trio moved to Melbourne, where Kram was
studying at the Victorian College of the Arts School of
Music. They soon became part of Melbourne's punk
scene, playing gigs at venues like The Tote Hotel in
Collingwood. Fellow alternative rockers The Meanies

were an early influence and helped the band get gigs and
a recording contract. They signed with Au-Go-Go Records
and were renamed as Spiderbait, Spiderbaby was already
being used by an American band. Spiderbait released
their first single, "Circle K", in 1991. A seven-track EP titled
P'tang Yang Kipper Bang Uh! (named after the Michael
Apted 1982 telemovie, P'tang, Yang, Kipperbang)
followed in January 1992, displaying the thrash-like
hardcore punk of their early live gigs. During 1992 they
supported United States groups Rollins Band and Beastie
Boys on their tour of Australia.
Major label signing and side projects
In 1995, Spiderbait were signed to Polydor Records by
Craig Kamber who also worked with Powderfinger and
Underground Lovers and released their second album,
The Unfinished Spanish Galleon of Finley Lake, in
October. The album reached number 14 on the Australian
charts, with singles "Monty" (September) and "Jesus"
receiving extensive airplay on radio station Triple J. The
album title refers to a then-unfinished project by the Finley
community, an artificially-made lake included a replica
sailing ship. Spiderbait promoted themselves by playing
to predominantly under-18 audiences. At the ARIA Music
Awards of 1996, the album received two nominations:
'Best Alternative Release', and 'Best Cover Art' for English
and George Stajsic.
Their third album, Ivy and the Big Apples, was issued in
October 1996 and reached number 3, and by 1997 had
received 2 Platinum certification by Australian Recording
Industry Association (ARIA) for shipments of over 140,000
units in Australia. Ivy and the Big Apples is considered by
many fans and critics to be Spiderbait's greatest album.
Their next single, "Buy Me a Pony", received extensive
airplay on Triple J, resulting in listeners voting it as their
favourite song in the Hottest 100 of 1996 the first
Australian group to do so. In October 1996, the group
toured Canada and played gigs in Los Angeles, New York,
and Seattle in the US. The album's third single, "Calypso",
also achieved commercial airplay, and reached number
13 in the ARIA Singles Chart in June 1997. It was featured
in the 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You during the
scene where the character of Kat (played by Julia Stiles) is
reading the novel The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. At the ARIA
Music Awards of 1997 the group received seven
nominations, but with Savage Garden dominating the
ceremony and winning ten awards, Spiderbait only
captured the 'Best Alternative Release' category for Ivy
and the Big Apples. The rest is history.

Question 1:
If you knew a woman
who was pregnant, who
had 8 kids already,
three who were deaf, two who were blind, one
mentally retarded, and she had syphilis, would you
recommend that she have an abortion?
Question 2:
It is time to elect a new world leader, and only your
vote counts. Here are the facts about the three
candidates.
Candidate A:
Associates with crooked politicians, and consults
with astrologists. He's had two mistresses. He also
chain smokes and drinks 8 to 10 Martinis a day.
Candidate B:
He was kicked out of office twice, sleeps until noon,
used opium in college and drinks a quart of whiskey
every evening.
Candidate C:
He is a decorated war hero. He's a vegetarian,
doesn't smoke, drinks an occasional beer and
never committed adultery.
Which of these candidates would be our choice?
Candidate A is....... Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Candidate B is........ Winston Churchill.
Candidate C is......... Adolf Hitler.
Your answer to the abortion question: If you said
YES, you just killed Beethoven. Makes a person
think before judging someone.

A woman was standing at the edge of a cliff

trying to get the nerve to jump off.
A homeless drunk stopped and mumbled:
"If you're about to kill yourself, how about a
shag before you go?"
The woman was angry and said:
"No! F*ck off you filthy old bastard."
The tramp turned to leave and said:
"No problems, I'll just go and wait at the
bottom then."

Just got off the phone with a friend who lives in

Scotland. She said that since early this morning
the snow has been nearly waist high and is still
falling. The temperature is dropping far below
zero and the north wind is increasing to near
gale force. Her husband has done nothing but
look through the kitchen window and just stare.
She
says that if it gets much worse, she may
have to let the drunken bastard in.
