The limbs and organs of vaastu Purusa are connected with construction of a building. Liver
(yakrt) is an important organ for digestion. Liver is towards the South-West in the body. The
Sthapatis, therefore, suggest to place cooking room or kitchen towards that direction, because
it is related to Agni. Rays of the Sun first reach this direction. Pollution collected through a night
is swept away by rays of the Sun. It is therefore, possible that the suggestion of locating kitchen
towards the South-East is due to this aspect.
The North-West (vayavya) is said to be the field presided by air (vayu). Organs like stomach,
spleen and rectum of the vaastu Purusa fall on that portion. The store-room has been
suggested towards that direction. A spleen, according to the science of medicine, does the
work of storing and restoring blood in a body. Herbs of medicine are recommended to be
planted towards the North-West. The suggestion through this recommendation appears to be
that a dweller should bet the fragrance of herbs through the air.
According to the Matsya Purana, the vaastu Purusa Mandala has particular deities of vaastu
Purusa in respective places. The North-East (Aisanya) is said to be occupied by Mercury
(budha) and Visnu. Accordingly, the place of conducting mental work and the worship chamber
in a house is to be situated in that direction.
The South-East (agneyi) is said to be occupied by the Moon and Parvati. The moon is said to
be the controller of mind and Parvati is the symbol of mother, of mind. Frailty is the nature of
mind. If Parvati becomes the possessor of the house-hold, her place like that a house-wife is in
that direction. Cooking room is to be in the South-East.
The South-West (nairrtya) is said to be controlled by Rahu and Kama or Cupid. So a bedroom
should be situated in that direction. Rahu is said to be incomplete. Therefore, in order to bring
completeness to life, this side must have been chosen for the purpose of marital life.
The vaastu Purusa lies with his back up. The concept may be that the burden is carried on the
back. It is a rule that pillars are not to be raised on the sensitive points of vaastu Purusa. The
sensitive points according to the science of physics are inlets and outlets. It is presumed that
the vaastu Purusa would suffocate if inlets and outlets are blocked with pillars. The sensitive
points exist also on the folds of the arms and legs. Pillars, if erected on those points, would not
find enough base and support. Therefore, those points are to be avoided for pillars.
The South-West (Nairrtya) should be heavier and the North-East (Aisanya) should not be so.
Aisanya is a place of akasa-tattva and, therefore a place of deities. It is in consistence with
Nature that the base should be heavier and the head should not be burdened. The hills and
mountains and the trees too indicate so. Nature has given us five organs. The main organs are
the eyes for vision, the ears for hearing, the nose to smell and the mouth to taste. They all are,
geographically speaking, in the head portion of a body. The head of the vaastu Purusa is at the
Aisanya. The head should be secure. It appears, therefore, that the North-East is to be kept
free from heavy structures like pillars, etc. (fig.3)
Our Health is maintained, if we follow the rules of diet consistent with the rules of Nature. In the
same manner, the health of a building or vaastu can be maintained if the construction is made
giving due regard to the principles of Nature. The limbs in a body should invariably be in their
proper places. So much so, the rooms in a house should be designed in thereby the inmates
too happy. If one's eyes are placed at the shoulder, it would be abnormal. So is the case with a
building.
The rule of the Universe is that the sun is at the central place and the Earth and the other
planets move around the Sun. vaastu Sastra appears to observe the same rule. The household
duties such as deity-worship, study, or cooking are to be performed towards the East and the
adjoining directions, i.e. the North-East and the South-East. The sun is in the mid-sky at noon,
and so the middle house is the dining hall and working place. After the sunset, the skies
adjacent to the West, i.e. the South-West and the North-West are covered with bedrooms and
store house.
Selecting a Plot
Keeping the Vaastu principles in mind, we now arrive at the at the basic parameters of
Vaastu for the purpose of selecting plots.North-East holds a special position as the solar
energy comes from the East and the Earth's magnetic axis runs along North and South
The West-facing Plot is average but good for The South-facing Plot is also average but good for
businessmen people in entertainment business.
The following are the guidelines to design and construct a prosperous house. It is essential to understand
inter prêt these ground rules and then apply.
1. The main door of the house should preferably be located in any of the exalted positions from the
Northeast corner - either from North of Northeast or from East of Northeast. Doors can also be in the South
of Southeast or West of Northwest but in no case, should the main entrance be from the center of any
direction. Also the main entrance or door should be avoided in all the following four directions, namely, North
of Northwest, East of Southeast, South of Southwest and West of Southwest. There should not be any
obstruction or water body just opposite the main entrance.
2. Balconies should be planned towards the East and North and should be definitely avoided in the South and
West. If balconies in the South and West cannot be avoided, then larger balconies must be provided towards
the North and East. Care should be taken while providing balconies so that a cut or truncation is not created
in the Northeast corner.
3. The kitchen should be ideally situated in the Southeast corner of the house and as an alternative in certain
cases, may be in the Northwest corner, but in both cases, the cooking platform should be arranged to facili-
tate cooking while facing east only. The Kitchen should never be in the Northeast corner and it should also
be avoided in the Southwest too, as both locations will create problems with respect to the health and
finance of the inmates.
4. Rooms in the West and East can be used for dining. The appetite can be stimulated in the dining hall by
having the walls painted in light pink or orange. A rectangular dining table is the most preferred. In the
dining room, while eating, one should sit facing East or West.
5. Grains and other food can be stored in the Northwest sector. Oil, butter, ghee, milk and other oily liquids
can be stored in the Southeast of the Northwest room.
6. When a generator or transformer is to be located outside the plot, it should be placed in an open space in
the Southeast sector. As a second choice, it may be placed in the Northwest sector.
7. The overhead water tank should be located in the Southwest corner of the terrace preferably in the West
of Southwest.
8. Penthouses, if built, should be in the Southwest corner of the terrace leaving an open space in the North
and East.
9. The prayer room should be planned in such a way that it is placed either in the Northeast corner or in the
central portion (Brahmasthana) of the house. The pictures of the god should touch the wall on the East side
in the prayer room facing West; inmates should perform their prayers facing East for better concentration
and devotion.
10. No garbage should be thrown or dumped in the Northeast corner of the building or plot and the
Northeast should always be kept free and clean.
11. Heavy equipments such as the grinder, fridge, etc, should be placed towards the South and West walls in
the kitchen. Even in the storeroom, racks should be built on the South and West walls.
12. Rainwater should flow West to East or South to North and ultimately flow out from the Northeast corner
of the house or plot.
13. The Northeast, North and East walls should be decorated with photo frames, mirrors, and paintings of
gods and with wallpaper with natural scenery; whereas the West, South and Southwest walls can be
decorated with scenery in a dull or matte finish. The South wall can be used for hanging pictures of departed
souls. Pictures of living beings may be hung on the Eastern wall.
14. It is always advisable, and it is considered profitable, to purchase additional adjacent plots on the North-
east, North and East sides.
15. Under no circumstance, should one acquire any plot adjoining the South or West sides of one's plot. Any
adjacent land acquired on the South or West side can be disastrous to the person.
2. It is preferable to have children's rooms in the West or North. Children should have their study desks in
the North or East of the room and they should face East while studying.
3. One should sleep with one's head pointing towards the South. Children, however, can sleep with their
heads pointing towards the West. No one should sleep with their heads in the North.
4. The bedroom can be painted in light to deep blues to induce sleep. Green is advised for study rooms to
promote intelligence. Sandal/ yellow is advised for the prayer room.
5. The living room should be located in the North or East sectors of the house. Heavy chandeliers or fancy
lamps should not be located in the geometrical center of the rooms. They may be placed slightly towards the
West or South of the room.
6. TVs and computers should ideally be placed in the Southeast corner of the living room or study room.
They should not be placed in the Northeast corner or Southwest corner.
7. Telephones can be placed in the Southeast or Northwest corner but not in the Southwest or Northeast.
8. Living rooms can be painted in white, yellow, light pink, light blue or green. Grey, red and black are to be
avoided.
9. Always keep the center of the room, building and plot, free from any loads, weights, pillars, columns,
beams, water bodies, etc.
10. It is preferable to have the staircase towards the South, West or Southwest of the building but it may be
in the Southeast or Northwest, depending on other parameters. Staircases should be avoided in the
Northeast, North and the East.
11. Circular/spiral staircases are generally to be avoided. The number of steps in a staircase should be odd,
including the landing step, and they should rise from East to West or from North to South. It is better to
make sure that the steps are by the South and West walls, and that it should be constructed in such a way
that the movement is in a clockwise direction while going upwards, that is from the ground to the higher
floors.
12. Toilets should be located in the Northwest corner of the building or in the Northwest corner of the rooms.
Where Northwest toilets are not possible, Southeast toilets are allowed. Other alternative directions for
toilets are Central-South or Central West. Closets in the toilets should face North or South, along the North-
South axis; and should not face the East or West. See figure for all possible locations for toilets and
bathrooms.
14. Mirrors in the toilet and dressing room should be on the North or East walls.
15. A bathroom in the East sector is most preferred as the beneficial rays of the morning sun can enter and
promote the health of the user.
16. In the office or study room, the table should be placed in the Western or Southern side so that one sits
facing the East or North. No equipment, furniture, cupboards, etc, should be placed touching the North or
East walls and if it becomes unavoidable, they should be kept at least 4" or 6" away from the walls.
17. Cash boxes can be located in the room towards the North (treasury). But if the box is heavy (such as a
safe, heavy almirah) then it should be kept in the Southwest corner and the door of the almirah should open
towards the North.
18. The storage or lumber-room can be located in the Southwest, adjacent to the Master bedroom.
19. If possible, the house should be extended by 4 feet to 5 feet in the Northeast direction to ensure the
Northeast directional bliss for the household. Growing tulsi and other beneficial herbal plants in the North-
east will promote good health and prosperity.
20. Pictures of landscapes depicting mountains should be hung on the South and West walls only. Land-
scapes containing water, such as pictures of lakes and rivers should be on the North and East walls. Pictures
of eagles, battle scenes, and carnivorous animals should not be used for interior wall decorations. Pictures of
horses, cows and elephants can be used for decoration purposes.
The Main Entrance, Doors and Windows needs a great attention as per Vaastu Shastra.
Besides outside settings and interiors too, there are several other aspects such as number of
doors and windows, direction of Main entrance etc.
Below are some points that one should always consider before designing the Main entrance,
the doors and the windows
• The Main Door should be the tallest and other doors should not be superior in size or in
beauty to the Main Door/Entrance
• There should be no obstructions in front of Main Door such as rails, staircase, big trees
etc. Opposite to it should not be a temple, lamppost or any kind of obstruction
• The number of Doors and Windows in the house should be in even numbers like
2,4,6,8,etc
• Doors should not be placed in the centre of the wall; they should always be off centered
• If a house faces East, the entrance should be fixed towards East, so that the Main Door
falls in the Northern half of that side. Such a door yields good results and is very
auspicious
• All the doors, windows should have their top in the same level i.e. they should be of
same height
• Each room must have two doors. If for some reason, only one door could be given in a
room, absence of the second door should be compensated by a window. This allows
ample of sun rays and air in the room, which is beneficial for the health of the inmates
Not only directions of the Bed Room but Interior arrangements also have impact on us. As per
Vaastu the following Furniture placements should be followed to live a peaceful, healthy and
wealthy life.
• Always sleep with your head in the East or South side (Place your Bed in such a
position that your headboard
• If you have an attached bathroom, make sure it does not directly face your bed and the
door is closed at all times
Kitchen:
• The ideal position for kitchen is the South-East corner of the house.
• The cooking stove is best placed in the South-East corner (the place of Lord Agni)
• The person cooking should face East direction as this brings good health for the family
members
• The water filter and other drinking water storage should be done in the North-East
direction of the kitchen
• Refrigerator could be kept in South-East, West or North side, but not in the North-West
corner
• The dining table if placed in the kitchen should be in the North-West corner
Store:
• Yellow, White, Blue or Green are the colors for Living Room
While designing the Dining Area according to Vaastu Shastra the shape of the dining table is
also considered as one of the major aspect.
• Always use pink or orange or any bright colors in the dining room
• If you want to place a fridge in the dining room, then South-East direction would be just
apt
• If you want to make provision for the fitting of washbasin in your dining room, then the
right place would be either Eastern or Northern corner
Staircase Vastu:
• The steps, whether internal or external shall always be from North to South and from
East to West
• The Number of risers should be such odd numbers
• The staircase block should be towards the Southern or South-Western portion of the
building
• A staircase located inside or outside the house should not be in the North-East corner
of the building
Vaastu Shastra lays down certain basic principles to be followed while positioning the toilet in
the house. Vastu for toilet recommends North-West corner of the house or building to be
assigned to the toilet. For an attached toilet, again the North-West side of the room is
recommended as per Vaastu. The second option could be the South-East direction.
Toilet in the North-East can adversely affect the finances and prosperity of the family. Whereas
toilet in South-West direction directly affects the head of the family in terms of his health and
might make him highly indecisive.
Some effective Vaastu/ Vastu Tips for architecture of the toilet includes:
• Toilet seats should ideally be placed in either South to North directions or West to East
direction
• The toilet walls should be painted in lighter hues and not warning colors like red and
black
Certain Vaastu/ Vastu principles if followed while doing the landscaping or planting the trees
n plants in our Garden we can achieve Healthy environment around us. Below are some of the
Vastu principles:-
Trees & plants: Plants should be planted during auspicious constellations. It is ideal to plant
during the bright half, i.e., close to full moon. Saplings should first be planted in clay pots and
only later placed in the ground. This enables them to grow better.
It is always good to grow a Tulsi plant on one’s property. Tulsi should be located on the North,
North-East, or East sides of the house, or in front of the house. Trees should not be planted
directly in front of the house’s main entrance. There should be an even number of trees on
one’s property, not an odd number. Trees should be planted on the South or West sides of the
house. Ideally, they should be planted on both these sides rather than on only one side. It is
not good to plant a tall tree on the North, North-East, or East sides of a building.
Smaller trees may be planted on the East or North sides, but no trees should be planted in the
North-East corner. Tall trees should not be too close to a building as they block the sunlight. A
tree’s shadow should not fall on the house. Large trees should not be located too near the
house as their roots can damage the foundation and compound wall. Also, the roots of large
trees absorb sunlight quickly, meaning these positive rays will not be received by the building.
Do not allow tree branches to touch the house.
Stone sculptures and rock gardens should be located on the South-West side of the house
because they are heavy.
Thorny plants should not be planted near the house. Cactus should not be planted at all.
Thorny plants other than roses have a negative energy. Ideally all thorny plants should be
pulled up and destroyed.
Creepers or other plants should not be grown by using the building or compound wall as
support. Creepers should only be grown in a garden, and they should have their own
independent supports.
If a tree must be removed because it is inauspicious or for other reasons, it should be removed
in the months of Magh or Bhadrapada. The day before cutting the tree, worship it and express
regret that it must be removed from its rooting. Promise to plant a new tree in its place. Do so
within three months. When cutting the tree, it should fall East or North, not in South or West.
