Road traffic safety refers to methods and measures for reducing the risk of a person using the road

network being killed or seriously

injured. The users of a road include pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, their passengers, and passengers of on-road public transport,
mainlybuses and trams. Best-practice road safety strategies focus upon the prevention of serious injury and death crashes in spite of
[1]
human fallibility (which is contrasted with the old road safety paradigm of simply reducing crashes assuming road user compliance
with traffic regulations). Safe road design is now about providing a road environment which ensures vehicle speeds will be within the
human tolerances for serious injury and death wherever conflict points exist. Furthermore, the highest possible degree of safety shall
be ensured when transporting goods by road. It is of vital importance to monitor and validate the road transportation safety, including
[2]
comprehensive checks on drivers, vehicles and safety processes.
The basic strategy of a Safe System approach is to ensure that in the event of a crash, the impact energies remain below the
threshold likely to produce either death or serious injury. This threshold will vary from crash scenario to crash scenario, depending
upon the level of protection offered to the road users involved. For example, the chances of survival for an unprotected pedestrian hit
by a vehicle diminish rapidly at speeds greater than 30 km/h, whereas for a properly restrained motor vehicle occupant the critical
impact speed is 50 km/h (for side impact crashes) and 70 km/h (for head-on crashes).
International Transport Forum, Towards Zero, Ambitious Road Safety Targets and the Safe System Approach, Executive Summary page 19[1]
As sustainable solutions for all classes of road have not been identified, particularly lowly trafficked rural and remote roads,
a hierarchy of control should be applied, similar to best practice Occupational Safety and Health. At the highest level is
sustainable prevention of serious injury and death crashes, with sustainable requiring all key result areas to be considered.
At the second level is real time risk reduction, which involves providing users at severe risk with a specific warning to
enable them to take mitigating action. The third level is about reducing the crash risk which involves applying the road
[3]
design standards and guidelines (such as from AASHTO), improving driver behaviour and enforcement.

Top 10 Road Safety Tips

1.

Don't use your mobile phone whilst driving

Making or receiving a call, even using a 'hands free' phone, can distract your attention from driving and could lead to an accident.

2.

Belt up in the back

In a collision, an unbelted rear passenger can kill or seriously injure the driver or a front seat passenger.

3.

Don't drink and drive

Any alcohol, even a small amount , can impair your driving so be a safe driver don't drive and drive.

4.

Slow down
At 35mph you are twice as likely to kill a pedestrian than at 30mph.

5.

Children
Children often act impulsively, take extra care outside schools, near buses and ice cream vans when they might be around.

6.

Take a break
Tiredness is thought to be a major factor in more than 10% of road accidents. Plan to stop for at least a 15 minute break every 2 hours on a long journey.

7.

Walk safely
When crossing a road always use a pedestrian crossing if there is one nearby. Help others to see you by wearing fluorescent or reflective clothing in poor
light conditions.

8.

Anticipate
Observe and anticipate other road users and use your mirrors regularly.

9.

Use car seats

Child and baby seats should be fitted properly and checked every trip.
10. Keep your distance
Always keep a two second gap between you and the car in front.

Mobile Phone use while driving

All phone calls distract from driving. Research shows that using a mobile phone while driving means you are four times more likely to crash.
It is illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone or similar device while driving.

The penalty is 100 and 3 penalty points. If the case goes to court, it's a maximum fine of 1,000 (2,500 if driving a bus, coach or heavy goods vehicle),
discretionary disqualification and 3 points. Your insurance costs could also go up.
If you reach 6 points within 2 years of passing your test, your licence will be revoked and you will need to re-sit your test to get your licence back.
You can also be prosecuted for using a hands free phone or similar device if you are distracted and not in proper control of the vehicle. The same penalties apply.
Employers could also be prosecuted if employees are distracted because they require them to use their mobile phones while driving.

Callers should hang up too

Callers also play an important role. If you ring someone on their mobile phone who turns out to be driving when they answer, say you'll call them later and hang up.

Drink and Drug Driving

Any amount of alcohol will impair your ability to drive. In fact, the only way to know you're definitely safe to drive is by not drinking.
Beer, wine and spirits vary so much in strength that calculating the number of units you've drunk isn't easy. You could find yourself over the limit without intending
to be.
Drugs are equally as dangerous. Whether illegal or prescribed by your doctor, drugs can affect your judgement, vision and concentration.
If you have been prescribed medication and are concerned about your ability to drive safely, consult your doctor or a pharmacist.

Legal alcohol limit

Legally, the alcohol limit for drinking and driving is currently 80mg of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.
That means drinking up to two pints of normal strength beer or up to one large glass of wine could put you over the limit.
Your liver takes an hour to process one unit of alcohol so if you've had a heavy night drinking, you could still be over the limit the next morning.
Remember, the effects of drugs may last longer than you think too.
Don't take the risk

The law
If you take the risk and drink or use drugs before getting behind the wheel, you could pay for it for the rest of your life.
If convicted of drink or drug driving:
You'll have a criminal record
You'll be banned from driving for at least a year
You'll be fined up to 5000
You could face up to six months in prison
You could lose your job
Your insurance costs will rocket
More seriously, you could kill or injure someone, face up to 14 years in prison and have to live with it on your conscience for the rest of your life.
You don't just take the risk as a driver. Never get into a car as a passenger when the driver's been drinking or taking drugs. Don't risk your life for a lift, find another
way home.

Fact
To give your body time to fully recover from the effects of a heavy night of drinking, you should avoid alcohol for a full 48 hours. It takes at least one hour for each
unit of alcohol to leave your body.
It's not worth the risk.

Myths
"A cup of strong coffee will sober me up" - Caffeine is a stimulant so although it might make you more alert, it won't make you sober.
"I'll be fine to drive after a cold shower" - A cold shower might be refreshing but it won't remove alcohol from your system.
"If I just drink beer and avoid the hard stuff like spirits I'll be okay" - Alcohol is alcohol regardless of how you drink it.

Anumang lungkot, tayoy aahon
May lunas sa sugat ng kahapon

Laging masaya ang kwento ng Pasko
Dahil sino ka man, may nagmamahal sayo
Ngayong Kapaskuhan ang pangako ko
Sa puso koy magkasama tayo

Marangya man ang pagdiriwang
Kahit simpleng kasiyahan
Ang tunay na may kayamanan

Road Safety Precautions Help Prevent Auto Accidents

There is a reason we have rules on the road for drivers - when people follow the road rules and take safety precautions,
many auto accidents are prevented. Here are 3 tips for road safety that may help you avoid getting into an accident:
Obey Speed Limits
Speed limits are based on the conditions of the road, visibility, and the types of cars and trucks that frequent them. Many car
accidents are a result of speed. They also are created with things drivers can't necessarily see, like how many side roads or
driveways there are. Speed limits are posted for ideal road conditions, so you should adjust your maximum speed based on
road and weather conditions, too.
Be Prepared to Stop
If you have to slam on your brakes, you risk putting your car into a skid and losing control. It generally points to the driver not
paying attention, so be alert to your surroundings and always prepared to stop.
Turn Your Headlights On
Most modern cars have headlights that come on automatically when you put the car into "drive". Even if it's not dark enough
that you need the headlights to see where you're going, the headlights help make your car more visible to the other drivers on

the road. You can drive with headlights all the time, or at least get in a habit of using them when it's foggy, raining or snowy. At
night, make sure you don't keep your high-beam headlights on when other cars are near by, they can make it impossible for
other drivers to see where they're going.
If you have been injured in an auto accident, call on NY auto accident lawyers for a consultation of your case.

Every hour, 40 budding youth under the age of 25 lose their life in road accidents worldwide. 1.2 million people die in traffic accidents every year. According to
the World Health Organization (WHO), road accidents happen to be the second most important cause of death for 5 - 29 year olds.
Road accidents are one of the significant causes of disability, injury and death in the world. The trauma caused by road accidents is unimaginable - physical,
mental, financial and many a time irrevocable!

India has the highest road traffic accident rate worldwide with over 140,000 deaths annually, beating even China. Every hour, nearly 14 lives are lost due to
road accidents in India. More than 40 % of the deaths are caused by trucks and two-wheelers. Most accidents occur in the afternoons and during peak hours
(especially in the evening) considered an unsafe or dangerous time to be on the road. In 67% of these accidents there is head injury. Most people do not
wear seat belts or those on two wheelers do not wear a helmet -though it is compulsory in many states of the country. Our traffic conditions are chaotic, the
rules are broken all the time and we have no traffic sense. All this reflects in the number of fatal accidents that occur in India. Road traffic accidents have
come down in most western countries due to strict adherence to traffic rules and stringent penalities.

Traffic Crashes have killed over 3 million Americans, more than all U.S Combat deaths. Every 13 minutes someone dies in a
crash. Every American household pays $145 each year to subsidize unrecovered costs of traffic accidents.

DON'T JUST SIT THERE.

Your safety depends on the condition of your vehicle. Its the drivers responsibility to
maintain all equipment. Dont wait for your yearly inspection. Keep the owners manual in
the glove compartment. Check it regularly to note scheduled service reminders and to log
maintenance. Oil changes every 3,000 to 5,000miles provide increased mileage, lower oil
consumption and improve trade-in value.
Save yourself money, headache and the trouble of a breakdown. Learn to detect signs of
wear and tear. Catch danger while its still only a little trouble.

Take safety precautions to reduce your personal risk. Use safety equipment, including safety
belts, speedometer, etc.
Maintain your vehicle and all equipment. Know and obey traffic laws. Drive defensively.
Periodically Manually Check:

Fluid Levels: oil, wipers, coolant, power steering, brake and transmission;

Brakes: for firmness;

Tire Pressure: and treads - keep an eye out for uneven wear;

Light Bulbs: in the trunk, under the hood and in the glove compartment;

All Lights: front, high and low beam, brake lights, directional and interior lights;

Belts, hoses and wires for wear, loosening or dislocation;

Horn;

Spare tire and access to it. Gardening gloves for changing tires;

Contents of First Aid and Car Safety Kit: update and replenish as necessary.

If your car should become disabled, try to get well clear of the road. Keep an emergency road
kit in your trunk. Warn oncoming cars with lights, flares and a raised hood. See your dealer or
mechanic whenever you detect abnormal signs.

Aggressive driving behaviors are linked to half of all car crashes. It is the drivers legal responsibility to do everything to avoid
being in a crash.

High-Risk Behaviors - Moving Violations that Threaten the Safety of Others.

These include: speeding, running red lights and stop signs, tailgating, frequent and unsafe lane changes and angry
or threatening behavior towards other motorists.
Aggressive drivers have low regard for others, and use their cars to express their anger and frustration.
How to Handle them:
Steer clear of aggressive drivers.
Don't look at or challenge aggressive drivers.
Let them pass you and, if necessary, phone 911 to report them to the police.

How Not to Become Aggressive:

Monitor your own state of mind to make sure you aren't a danger to others.
Allow enough time to reach your destination without speeding. Keep food in
the car. Monitor your emotions; dont drive if youre upset.

Don't Trigger Aggression:

Actions that trigger aggression involve a failure to follow basic traffic laws, such as:
Failing to turn when a right on red is permitted.
Blocking traffic.
Failing to stay in the right lane, except to pass.
Running or rolling through RED lights and STOP signs.
Passing on a double yellow line.
Failure to signal lane changes.
Failure to check traffic before changing lanes.
Inappropriate speed
Distracted driving and inadequate attention to conditions.
Passing on the shoulder during dense traffic.
