Heart Coaster

By: Doni Speigle

Materials:
For white coaster with red heart:

Finished Size: 4 wide x 4 high

Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn:

- 8 yards Red
- 13 yards White
Size G (4.25mm) Crochet Hook
Yarn Needle

Gauge: 4 sc & 4 rows = 1 inch

PATTERN NOTES:
Following Color Charts: When following a color chart, each square represents one sc. Work all right side
rows (even numbered rows) by following the chart from right to left and work all wrong side rows (odd
numbered rows) by following the chart from left to right. Ch 1, turn at the end of each row.
Changing Colors: To change colors: when completing the stitch prior to the start of a new color,
complete the stitch through until the last yo (yarn over). On the last yo, pick up new color, yo and pull
through loops to complete stitch. You now have the new color on the hook and are ready to continue
stitching.

Using Row Count Instructions: To use row counts, the number of stitches are followed by the color
abbreviation. For example: Row 3 reads 5W, 3R, 5W. This means with white, sc in first 5 sts, change to
red, sc in next 3 sts, change to white, sc in last 5 sts. Ch 1, turn at the end of each row.

Heart Coaster:
Note: Even numbered rows are right side rows, and odd numbered rows are wrong side rows.
Row 1) with white, ch 14, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn. (13 sc)
Rows 2 13) Follow either color chart or row count instructions below.
End off, weave in ends.

Row 2) 6W, 1R, 6W, ch 1, turn.
Row 3) 5W, 3R, 5W, ch 1, turn.

Row 11) 3W, 2R, 3W, 2R, 3W, ch 1, turn.
Rows 12 13) 13W, ch 1, turn.

= 1 sc white
= 1 sc red
Ch 1, turn at the end of each row.

Border:
With red, join with a sl st in any stitch (I like to start at the bottom center), sc in same st as joining,
*change to white, sc in next st, change to red, sc in next st*, repeat from * to * around, working a sc in
each stitch, with 3 sc in each corner. You will be changing colors on every stitch (including the 3 sc sts in
each corner) to get the checkered border. After stitching the last white sc, change to red, and join with
sl st to beg sc. End off, weave in ends.
Note: You can also work the border in just one color, stitch a sc in each st around, with 3 sc in each
corner.
