Statement of Purpose
Since my school days, I was magnetized by the role electronics played in our day to day lives, which engendered me in taking
up Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. However my genuine pursuit of electronics occurred during the first year
of my undergraduate, when I made a simple Bipolar Junction Transistor checking device. As a reward, my college professor
decided to implement it in our departments Analog and Electronic Circuit Design Lab. In subsequent years of my
undergraduate, the versatility and profound nature of electronics, in particular of Embedded domain made it even more
interesting and sparked a desire to explore it further. I now wish to delve further into this area of research during my Masters
at IOWA State University.
My academic experiences have refined and explored my vision towards Electronics and Computer Engineering. Classes in
Digital Design, Microprocessors and Peripherals and 'Microcontrollers' introduced me to Logic designs, Computer
Architecture, Assembly codes, On Chip Resources and Programming. While, Embedded System classes further aided me in
understanding Embedded processors, Real time operating System and Embedded Software Architecture.
The major highlight of my Bachelors was a project in the field of Embedded Systems, titled as A Digital Stethoscope with CAD
analysis, under the guidance of Prof. Veeresh P. M., during my final year. The purpose of this project was to design and
implement a digital stethoscope to serve as a platform for potential computer aided diagnosis (CAD) for the detection of
cardiac murmurs. The system used a custom-built sensor to capture heart sounds and convert them to electrical signals to be
processed by a microcontroller. The captured signals were further processed for real-time auscultation. Keypad and wide
display were used as user interface and Mickro C was used as the software for user interface. Real-time and recorded data
could also be visualized using a MATLAB software interface that would be running on a separate PC, connected via serial
interface with microcontroller. The interface was also used to the transmit data to calculate and display the patients average
heart rate in beats per minute.
My undergraduate experience has provided a glimpse into the world of research. It has served as a catalyst for my efforts to
go beyond the fundamentals towards graduate studies for greater intellectual satisfaction. At IOWA State University,
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, my interest closely aligns with Dr.Morris Changs research interest
aiming at Embedded system and development of Architectural support for Java systems and Dr. Phillip Joness research
focus on Adaptable computing systems, reconfigurable hardware, and embedded systems.
I present myself as a student who is goal oriented, hardworking and has the necessary analytical skills to conduct research. I
am sure, the quality knowledge and impeccable guidance will mold me to be in the learning mode all my life, opening way for
constant growth as a person and as a professional. Therefore, I request you to consider me a worthy applicant for the MS in
Computer Engineering at IOWA State University.
