1 Introduction
1.1 Scope
This Operational Instruction describes the procedure to install software for a Base
Station Controller (BSC) Network Interface-Ethernet (NWI-E) switch.
When performing this procedure, it is mandatory to apply it on both the A-side and the
B-side BSC NWI-E.
See Section 3 for more information regarding BSC with Adjunct Processor Group (APG).
2 Procedure
2.1 Prerequisites
2.1.1
Conditions
The following conditions must apply before this procedure can be completed:
2.1.2
2.1.3
Network cable between the computer and the BSC NWI-E (TSR 491 603)
Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server software or SSH server software
A computer with a serial port and terminal emulation software
Null-modem cable between the serial port and the serial management port of the
BSC NWI-E (TSR 491 616)
Grounding wrist strap
2.2 Actions
First-Time Installation A-Side BSC NWI-E?
1. Is this a first-time installation of software on the A-side BSC NWI-E?
Yes
Go to Step 2.
No
Go to Step 13.
Initiate IP Address, A-Side BSC NWI-E
2. Configure the computer to use the Internet Protocol (IP) address
192.168.255.3/24. Use the default gateway 192.168.255.1 .
3. Connect both the null-modem- and the network-cable between the A-side BSC
NWI-E and the computer.
Note:
Use the Ethernet management port on the NWI-E for the network cable.
4. Use the terminal emulation software to log on to the A-side BSC NWI-E. Use
username admin with blank password.
Accept the default values on all questions following the logon.
Note:
See Section 3.1 for terminal emulation software configuration.
5. Assign an IP address to the Mgmt Virtual LAN (VLAN).
configure vlan Mgmt ipaddress 192.168.255.1/24
Note:
The Mgmt VLAN is not routed so there will be no address conflicts even though
both NWI-Es will have the same address.
6. Go to Step 16.
First-Time Installation B-Side BSC NWI-E?
7. Is this a first-time installation of software on the B-side BSC NWI-E?
Yes
Go to Step 8.
No
Go to Step 13.
Initiate IP Address, B-Side BSC NWI-E
8. Configure the computer to use the Internet Protocol (IP) address
192.168.255.3/24. Use the default gateway 192.168.255.1 .
9. Connect both the null-modem- and the network-cable between the B-side BSC
NWI-E and the computer.
Note:
Use the Ethernet management port on the B-side NWI-E for the network cable.
10. Use the terminal emulation software to log on to the B-side BSC NWI-E. Use
username admin with blank password.
Accept the default values on all questions following the login.
Note:
See Section 3.1 for terminal emulation software configuration.
11. Assign an IP address to the Mgmt Virtual LAN (VLAN).
Go to Step 17.
No
Go to Step 32.
Install New ExtremeXOS
17. Log on to the BSC NWI-E if not already logged on.
Note:
See Additional Information, Section 3.2.
18. Check which image is active on the BSC NWI-E.
show switch
19. Download the new version of ExtremeXOS to the non-active partition image
space.
Note:
See the work order.
Note:
See Additional Information, Section 3.3.
Note:
The passive memory area will be overwritten when upgrading the ExtremeXOS.
20. Is SSH installed on the running system?
Yes
Go to Step 21.
No
Go to Step 22.
21. Download the new version of the SSH module to the non-active partition image
space
Note:
See the work order.
Note:
See Additional Information, Section 3.4.
22. Reboot the NWI-E.
reboot
23. Log on to the BSC NWI-E.
Note:
See Additional Information, Section 3.2.
24. Verify that the correct ExtremeXOS version is loaded on the BSC NWI-E.
show version
25. Save the new configuration to the active configuration space.
Printout:
RP INTERCOMMUNICATION NET BLOCKING END STATUS
Alarm ceasing printout:
RP INTERCOMMUNICATION GROUP MANUALLY BLOCKED
Is Software Installed on B-Side BSC NWI-E?
34. Has the B-side BSC NWI-E been installed?
Yes
Go to Step 35.
No
Go to Step 7.
Job Completed
35. Make a report.
Note:
See Operational Instruction Report of Finished Work.
36. The job is completed.

The APG4x cluster address is always on the active APG side. In this example it is
150.132.100.53, and it is reached through port 3. As port 3 is the Intercon port
grouping, this means that the cluster address is connected to the other BSC NWI-E. This
means that the inactive half is connected to the BSC NWI-E that produced the printout.
Another way to determine this is to look at the MAC column. The active side is indicated
by the same value occurring for two IP addresses.
