O Little Town of Bethlehem

Bethlehem, a town of about 25,000 today was probably much smaller in 1865 when Phillip Brooks visited the
town and immortalized it with this wonderful Christmas carol. As a Canaanite village before the conquest of
Palestine by the Jews it was known as Bethlahum, meaning house of war. After their conquest it was revocalized to Bethlehem which means house of
bread. How fitting for the future birthplace of the
one who would later identify Himself as the Bread
of life.

In scripture we first become acquainted with this

little town when reading the obituary of Jacobs wife
Rachel (Gen.35:16-20). At that time it went by the
name Ephrath. This little town takes on new
significance when the prophet Micah declares , but
you Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little
among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall
come forth to me the one who will be ruler in Israel,
whose goings forth are from old, from everlasting.
(Micah 5:2)

It is enlightening to note how God uses the little to accomplish His big purpose. Those who are voted by their
contemporaries asmost likely to succeed are usually passed over by the Divine planner. When the Israelites
were being prepared for conquering the promised land Moses reminded them that God did not choose them
because they were greater than other nations, but rather they were the least of all peoples. (Deut. 7:7). And
once in the promised land God surprised the Israelites by delivering them from the hand of Sisera through the
bravery of a woman named Debra. And what about
Gideon and his victory over the Midianites? God said
to him go in this might of yours and you shall save
Israel from the hand of the Midianites. Have I not
sent you? Gideon responded in total astonishment
as most of us would have, saying Oh my Lord! (my
interpretation) How can I save Israel? Indeed my
clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am least in
my Fathers house. And the Lord said to him surely
I will be with you, and you will defeat the Midianites
as one man. And of course it was the young
shepherd boy named David who slew the Philistine
giant Goliath and later became king of Israel.
Samuel had to pass over seven sons of Jesse before
David the youngest and least likely to be anointed
for the job of king. And it was this boy with whom the Lord would establish a special covenant of an everlasting
kingdom.
Not only was Jesus born in a little town, throughout his life he demonstrated Gods preference for using little
things. For example he used five loaves and two fish to feed thousands of hungry people. He often used little
children to teach great truths.When the disciples asked Jesus who was greatest in the kingdom of heaven He set
a child in their midst and said, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means
enter the kingdom of heaven.
A zealous, self-righteous Pharisee named Saul became a humble servant of God. After his conversion this former
persecutor of Christians referred to himself as least of the apostles(1cor. 15:9),least of all the saints (Ep.3:8)
and chief of sinners (1tim.1:15). He realized that God uses the little people. And when it comes to our own
salvation the apostle makes very clear whom God has chosen. But God has chosen the foolish things of the
world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things that are
mighty, and the base things of the world and things which are despised God has chosen.....
(1Cor.1:27-28).
